Abstract

The unprecedented Covid-19 Pandemic has transformed the world in more ways than anyone can ever imagine. The strict health protocol, social distancing measures, travel restrictions and work from home policies imposed by governments across the globe have transformed the way meetings and conferences are held. Conventional meetings and conferences involving large numbers of people have been prohibited and moved from onsite to online. Virtual meeting platforms is now the new norm. This move also transforms the way interpreters work. Interpreters now work remotely, and in a virtual setting. Indonesia is not immune to this transformation, and Indonesian interpreters must also quickly shift gear. However, the move also brought along a set of problems, including, limited connectivity, insufficient tools and equipment, atypical communication methods, lack of skillsets, confusions, hesitations, and of course, reluctance. Keywords: Remote Interpreting, virtual presence, quality of interpretation, acoustic shock, fatigue.

Abstract

Questionnaire translation seems simple and easy. However, it turns out that the theory of questionnaire translation has evolved since 1970s where the scholars in the fields of medicine, psychology, and business or management have put their efforts to develop the ways and phases of questionnaire translation to obtain a successful and valid result. This study aims to present the challenges and problems in questionnaire translation from the opinions of those scholars and from the analysis of the English to Indonesian questionnaire translation samples. This paper applies library research and uses a qualitative approach to describe and analyze those challenges and problems. The result shows that there are two main problems in the translation of this text type, namely being too literal (faithful) translation and ethnocentricity. It is concluded that a questionnaire should not be translated closely to the source text and attention must be paid to the English culture carried out to the target text. Keywords: questionnaire translation; challenges and problems; being too literal; ethnocentricity.

Abstract

A place name generally is translated from source text into the target text by preserving it, but when it is used as metonymy, it will need another strategy, as it carries additional contextual references and inferences. The translation of metonymy has been widely discussed from figurative translation method to cognitive approach, all agrees on the cultural context which is embedded in metonymy. This paper aims to propose strategies in translating place name metonymy which is most unlikely to be preserved during translation and to suggest taxonomy of possible result. The translation will adopt strategy from Baker (2011) description on translating non-equivalence at word level. The study is descriptive qualitative. The result shows that the place name metonymy will not be preserved as it is and shall be translated with possible strategies such translation by general words and loan words plus explanation. Thus, the place name metonymy is most likely lost during translation. Keywords: Metonymy Translation; Place Name Metonymy; Cultural Context.

Abstract

Metaphor in political discourse is common as it helps to shape argumentation. It is also found in Kamala Harris's acceptance speech after she is announced as elected vice president of the United States of America. This study aims to investigate the conceptual metaphor found in Kamala Harris's acceptance speech and to further examine the metaphor mapping scheme of the Indonesian translation results. The data source is Kamala Harris’s Speech text and its Indonesian translation. Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) of Lakoff and Johnson is used as the theoretical framework during metaphor analysis, whereas Mandelbilt (1995) Cognitive Translation Hypothesis is used during the analysis of the metaphor translation process. The result shows that from ten metaphors examined, there are six target domains of conceptual metaphor found; whereas the comparison with the Indonesian translation shows all metaphors fall into Similar Mapping Condition (SMC) with mostly the same wording or lexical expressions.
