Abstract

This research aims to analyze the strategies used for translating cultural terms in English translation of novel Bumi Manusia written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The research employs the theory put forward by Newmark (1988) which divides cultural elements into five categories: Ecology, material culture, social culture, social organization and gestures and habits. The research also employs the theory explained by Baker (2009) and Newmark (1988) which describe several translation strategies commonly used by translators, including transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, additional explanation, and reduction. Researcher also uses other sources, including books and journals on history and culture, to deepen understanding of the context of the cultural terms contained in ST, as well as their translation in TT. Abstract

This study investigates the translation of MacLeish’s poem "The Young Dead Soldiers" conducted by Chairil Anwar from two different perspectives, namely rewriting and reception perspectives. The analysis results in several findings. First, the translator manipulates most of the source poem’s features, socio-cultural context, ideology, and the poetics of the source poem so that the translator opposes the poetics of the source poem. Second, the translator alters or distorts MacLeish's intention in setting forth universal true peace by conveying the Indonesian’s armed struggle to defend the soverenity, independence, and to support to Soekarno’s government. Hence, it conforms to the ideology of the “Mimbar Indonesia” magazine, established and run by Sukarno government officials. Third, the translator also tries to present the translated poem as a new poem that is in line with the ideology of the person in chief of the "Kebudajaan" rubric in “Mimbar Indonesia” magazine who did not provide any single room for translation work. The ultimate goal of the manipulation is to provide the translation an acceptance among patrons (being published in the volume) and readers (being assumed as the original work of the translator). Fourth, both linguistic and literary equivalence cannot guarantee the success of literary translation so that the translator takes advantages of his own creativity to examine Indonesian literary infrastructure including patron, readers, ideology, poetics, economy, politics, history, and other structures upholding the Indonesian literary systems for an acceptance. Keywords: translation, poetry, manipulation, literary system.

Abstract

This article identifies and categorizes translation errors found in the translation of quotations in football stories posted on bola.com. Using functional approach, this descriptive qualitative research employs Nord’s taxonomy of translation errors as the theoretical groundwork in identifying the errors and then analyzing their functional impacts to the target quotations. After comparing the source and target translations, this research finds 13 (thirteen) errors, including pragmatic errors, text-specific errors, linguistic errors, and cultural errors. Overall, pragmatic error is found to be the most crucial type of error and most easily exposed. The findings imply that documentary translation approach in translating quotation in sport stories should not be rigidly used as this could sacrifice the expressive function that a quotation may serve. Keywords: translation errors, quotation, text function, documentary translation, sport story
