Abstract

This study aims to: (1) develop a partnership model of vocational education with business sectors in civil engineering expertise program of vocational secondary schools in Bali and (2)testing the effectiveness and efficiency of partnership model developed. The study used the design and development model of Richey & Klein (2009), which consists of three main phases, namely the phase of model development, model validation, and model testing. The phase of model development used the qualitative approach, through literature review, observation and interview. Expert review techniques were used in the model validation phase. The model testing used pre-experimental design with one-shot case study. The study found that the partnership model of vocational education with the business sector in civil engineering expertise program of vocational secondary schools in Bali involves several components, such as key stakeholders, the underlying principle of partnership, orientation/common goal, the management of educational resources (teachers and facilities), curriculum development, implementation of learning/training and work practices, competency test of graduates, distribution of learning outcomes/output, as well as monitoring, evaluation and feedback of partnership program. Experimental results show that the partnership model developed has met all of the criteria (effective, practical and efficient).

Abstract

This research aimed to form a collaborative research and research group in the Department of Languages, Arts and Culture Management, Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada (Departemen Bahasa, Seni, dan Manajemen Budaya or DBSMB). This research is essential for considering DBSMB’s needs in developing applied products as a result of interdisciplinary research. On a broader scale, vocational education institutions outside UGM can see an overview of the multidisciplinary research process that has been carried out. The research group was formed in the Culture and Tourism Center, which was based on a functional perspective of organizational functions. The exploratory method was carried out by observation, interview, and literature study. Interviews were conducted with informants consisting of the head of the Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC), head of study programs, secretary of study programs, and lecturers at DBSMB. The results showed that each lecturer at DBSMB had different research interests. Lecturers’ research interests had several intersections that could be made into collaborative research groups. The central theme of culture and tourism could accommodate research collaborations from lecturers in the study programs of Record Management, English, Tourism, Korean Language, and Japanese Language. The challenges in the formation of the research group came from internal factors (communication, funding, and infrastructure) and external factor (collaboration with industry, policy differences, administrative procedures, and interests in research). This research was expected to contribute to the formation of a research group in other vocational education institutions and affect the improvement of vocational graduates’ quality and scientific development.

Abstract

The electrical topic is considered a material that is difficult to understand because electricity is a substance that is not seen but can be felt. The objectives of this study were 1.) to develop digital textbooks for basic electricity materials based on problem-based learning; 2.) to analyze the feasibility of digital textbook products for basic electricity materials based on problem-based learning. This research is development research using the 4D model, namely define, design, develop, disseminate. This study involved language, material, and media experts in validating research products. The research subjects were students of technical engineering vocational education in one of the public universities in Indonesia who took Basic Electrical and Electronics courses, namely 25 students. The data collection technique used interviews, document analysis, and questionnaires. The data analysis technique used descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the research results that have been done, it has resulted in several conclusions, namely; 1.) Development of digital textbooks on basic electricity materials based on problem-based learning is carried out by referring to the 4D model development steps, namely define, design, develop, and disseminate; 2.) The appropriateness of digital textbooks according to the media expert's assessment of getting a mean score of 3.61 is declared very good, the material expert's assessment is 3.52, which is declared very good, and the user response gets an assessment of 3.51, which is declared very good Theoretically developed digital textbooks are able to increase student interest and motivation to learn basic electrical materials in an easy way.

Abstract

The aims of this study are: (1) to identify the needs of grade 11 students of the Automotive Engineering Study Program in learning reading and writing, and (2) to develop appropriate English reading and writing learning materials. This is research and development that employed Jolly and Bolitho’s model with some adaptation. The development procedure consists of conducting needs analysis, designing the syllabus, developing learning materials, expert judgment, conducting field testing, and materials evaluation. The research subject was 64 grade XI students of Light Vehicle Engineering or Teknik Kendaraan Ringan (TKR) at Vocational High School (VHS) AX. The needs analysis data indicate that, in learning reading, the students want to learn simple instructions and vocabulary items relevant to the automotive field. They also want to learn to write letters and create simple reports that are relevant to the automotive field. Regarding the theoretical validation, the appropriateness of learning materials is categorized as “very good” according to the expert with a mean score of 3.48 (in the interval 3.28 £ x £ 4). According to the students, the appropriateness of the learning materials is categorized as “very good” with a score of 3.54 (in the interval 3.28 £ x £ 4). In general, the developed learning materials are appropriate for grade 11 students of the Automotive Engineering Study Program of VHS AX.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effectiveness of audio-visual media (picture, video, audio) on culinary students' learning outcomes in chicken carcass material. The researcher implemented a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of this study were the 10th-grade students of SMK Negeri 8 Medan, Academic Year 2016/2017. Cluster random sampling was applied in this study, which consisted of one experimental class and one control class. Meanwhile, some hypothetical tests used in this study were n-gain, independent t-test, and dependent t-test. The n-gain score of learning outcomes in the experimental class is higher than the control class, which is 0.5 and categorized as moderate. Furthermore, students' learning outcomes between those taught using audio-visual media and without audio-visual media in chicken carcass material indicated a significant difference with a significance score of 0.000 ≤ 0.05. Thus, the audiovisual media effectively improves the learning outcomes of the 10th-grade students of the culinary department in Chicken Carcass material.

Abstract

Needs analysis as an initial process in a course becomes crucial before deciding learning objectives, setting the assessment, creating course design, as well as developing materials. This study aims to describe the English competence and skills needed by the stakeholders and students’ perceptions of good teaching materials from various study programs at Vocational College UGM. The methods used in collecting data are questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire is distributed to the first semester students from all applied bachelor programs in Vocational College UGM using a stratified random sampling method. In addition, the interview is done with all heads of applied bachelor programs in Vocational College UGM for triangulation. The results show that the students are in the beginner level or basic users (A2 level in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or CEFR). Moreover, the competencies stated in the A2 level are considered needed by the students to master in academic and work-life contexts. Besides, the skill considered as the most important is speaking, followed by writing. The students also propose some criteria of good teaching materials that include the content, sequence, exercise, language features, technology, layout, and price.

Abstract

Learning media play a role in bridging the interaction between the teacher and students. Using learning media can help students to understand the material delivered by the teacher more efficiently. Al Kholiliyah, a Vocational High School in Bangkalan, Indonesia, still lacks interactive learning media to motivate students in learning. The robot transporter as an interactive learning medium can be applied to solve the lack of learning media that engage students in learning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the validity of the robot transporter as learning media, to analyze the validity of the learning plan (a syllabus, a lesson plan, a student worksheet)  of robot transporter learning media, and to analyze the student response of the usage robot transporter learning media. The validation results of the robot transporter learning media show that the value of the validity is 3.89, categorized as very valid. The validity of the syllabus is 3.78, categorized as very valid, the validity of the lesson plan is 3.88, categorized as very valid, and the validity of the student worksheets is 3.89, categorized as very valid. The results of student responses show that there are two responses: strongly agree and 28 responses with the category of agree. Based on the robot transporter validity, the learning plan validity, and the student response, it can be concluded that the robot transporter can be used in the teaching and learning process.
