Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the integration of linguistic methods—specifically structuralist and semantic frameworks—into literary criticism to enhance textual interpretation and reader engagement. Method: A qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach was employed, analyzing selected English and Persian literary texts with a focus on phonological, grammatical, and semantic elements. Results: The findings reveal that linguistic features such as phoneme sequencing, grammatical ambiguity, and metaphorical language significantly shape reader response and thematic perception. Structuralist criticism deciphers formal patterns, while semantic analysis exposes deeper emotional and ideological layers within literary works. Novelty: The research offers a novel synthesis of linguistic and literary approaches, proposing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary model that bridges theoretical gaps and transcends disciplinary boundaries. This model advocates for a pedagogical shift in literature education, encouraging the use of linguistic tools to cultivate critical thinking and interpretive precision. The proposed framework demonstrates universal applicability across languages and genres, contributing both to the enrichment of literary scholarship and the advancement of curriculum development.

Abstract

Objective: This investigation focuses on the stand taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, vis a vis the Eisenhower Doctrine made public by the United States in 1957 as part of its containment policy toward Soviet penetration in the Middle East. Method: The doctrine took shape after the Suez crisis and the ascendance of Arab nationalism as championed by Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, prompting Washington to offer its allies in the region direct military assistance to compensate for the rising power in the Arab world. Results: Saudi Arabia adopted the doctrine with a degree of caution, officially embracing it but did not directly get involved or use it as an excuse for intervention in Arab countries' affairs. This was in light of its struggle to ensure the independence of Arab decision-making atoning between regional relations and international dimensions, in addition to fears of the doctrine as a tool for establishing US hegemony. Jordan’s attitude was based on fluctuation, marked by heavy internal and external pressures. At first, King Hussein refused to embrace the doctrine to avoid popular and nationalist backlash, but with economic crisis and external security threats, eventually he could not escape aid offered by the US based on the doctrine with a marginal room for maneuvering. Novelty: The article asserts that these responses by each country to the Eisenhower Doctrine indicate the manner in which elements of the Middle East's political realities were entangled at that time; interests in the observance of national sovereignty, in obtaining Western aid, and in responding to rapidly occurring political transformation in the region.

Abstract

Objective: The problem of this research focuses on Pandiaman, a concrete form of music originating from the agricultural rhythms of the Nagari Gantuang Ciri community, with the main challenge being the lack of documentation and understanding of this musical form that may lead to the loss of local cultural heritage amid modernization, and the aim is to document the socio-cultural transformation of agriculture while preserving cultural heritage through the medium of art. Method: This work employs Practice-Led Research (PLR), which includes collecting field data, selecting event elements, converting them into sound material, and compiling and manipulating audio using digital technology, where natural sounds, agricultural activities, and residents' testimonies are processed as basic composition materials to present the collective memory of the community. Results: The findings show that the musical composition Pandiaman is a concrete musical work inspired by traditional agricultural rhythms in Nagari Gantuang Ciri, Solok Regency, West Sumatra, reconstructing three agricultural periods—Pandiaman (organic pause), paranam (food self-sufficiency), and chaos—through a reenactment approach and Concrete Music techniques. Novelty: Ultimately, this creation is expected to become a source of appreciation for music based on local contexts while contributing to broader discussions on the interrelationship between art, ecology, and cultural identity.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the convergence of Realism and Naturalism through the comparative analysis of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, focusing on how female protagonists are shaped by social, economic, and personal forces. Method: The research employs a comparative literary analysis that explores thematic concerns, narrative techniques, and character development across the two novels within their distinct cultural and historical contexts. Results: The findings reveal that Hardy’s Tess is situated in the moral and social frameworks of Victorian England, where fate and societal judgment dictate her tragic destiny, while Dreiser’s Carrie reflects the American Naturalist tradition of social mobility, material ambition, and moral ambiguity. Despite their differences, both authors depict women as products of their environments who simultaneously challenge societal constraints. Novelty: This study contributes to literary scholarship by demonstrating how Realism’s detailed representation of everyday life and Naturalism’s deterministic outlook converge in portraying women’s roles, offering new insights into cross-cultural interpretations of gender, morality, and social change at the turn of the century.

Abstract

Objective: The study analyzes how political allegiance impacts citizenship rights while investigating how sectarianism affects political allegiance and explores how civil society organizations and youth movements boost political engagement toward changing political allegiance in Iraq. Method: The examination employed quantitative methods by acquiring data using an online structured questionnaire from 200 participants, including questions about political loyalty, sectarianism, citizenship rights, and involvement in civil society groups and youth movements, with regression and Pearson correlation methods applied to analyze relationships between significant variables. Result: The results indicate that political loyalty has a strong effect on citizenship rights, accounting for 62.3% of the variance, sectarianism has a strong effect on political loyalty with a positive correlation of R = 0.788, and civil society organizations and youth movements were also found to increase political participation and transform political loyalty, with youth activism having the strongest positive correlation (r = 0.702) with political participation. Novelty: This research closes a significant knowledge gap by presenting a sociological investigation of how political loyalty, sectarianism, civil society actors, and youth movements interact in influencing citizenship practice, pinpointing the empowerment possibilities of civil society initiatives for developing democratic engagement and countering sectarianism.
