Abstract

This qualitative research examines the impact of the hospitality management study program on the promotion of sustainable marine tourism, with a focus on hospitality management students' views on marine environmental sustainability. Conducted at Triatma Mulya University, the study involved comprehensive interviews and focus groups with a diverse group of students, including first-year, third-year, and fifth-year students from the hospitality management study program. The aim is to understand how students perceive the integration of sustainability concepts into their education and how these perceptions influence their attitudes towards marine conservation. Through semi-structured interviews and group discussions, this research explores students' experiences with sustainability-oriented courses, their attitudes toward marine environmental protection, and their plans to apply these principles in their future careers. The study identifies key issues such as challenges students face in implementing sustainable practices, shortcomings in current educational approaches, and varying levels of commitment to marine environmental management. Students reported both enthusiasm for sustainability and difficulties in translating their learning into actionable practices, highlighting a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The findings reveal that while students recognize the importance of sustainability, they encounter obstacles such as limited resources, insufficient practical experience, and a lack of support in applying sustainability concepts. This research underscores the need for enhancements in educational strategies, such as incorporating more hands-on experiences, case studies, and better alignment between academic content and industry practices. Insights from this study provide valuable information for educators and policymakers aiming to refine hospitality management programs to better promote sustainable marine tourism. By contributing to the broader discussion on incorporating sustainability into educational frameworks, this research emphasizes the critical need to prepare students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to become effective advocates for marine environmental sustainability within the hospitality industry. This approach will help bridge the gap between education and real-world applications, fostering a more environmentally responsible workforce.

The research method employed a qualitative approach, utilizing various data collection techniques, including in-depth interviews, participant observations, and thorough document analysis, to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. The results of this study reveal that the integration of the Segara Kerthi concept into the hospitality education curriculum has a profound impact on increasing students' awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the importance of preserving marine environments. The students who participated in this study not only exhibited a deeper understanding of marine environmental issues but also demonstrated a heightened level of engagement and active participation in marine conservation activities. This indicates that the educational strategies employed were effective in fostering a strong environmental ethic among students, particularly concerning marine ecosystems. The conclusions drawn from this research suggest that the Segara Kerthi concept serves as a valuable and effective framework for embedding environmental consciousness within the hospitality education sector. Based on these findings, the study recommends that the Segara Kerthi concept be widely adopted and implemented across various hospitality education programs. Additionally, it suggests that collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders, including educators, industry professionals, and environmental organizations, be strengthened to enhance the effectiveness of marine environmental conservation initiatives. Abstract

Tourism attraction cannot be established alone, it must be juxtaposed by all the potential around it. The phenomenon of research on the dual attractiveness of tourism activities in a destination has become popular because it provides its own challenges and happiness for researchers who are competent in this field. This research explores the harmonization between the natural beauty of Sirombu Beach and the rich cultural tradition of Aekhula in West Nias Regency, North Sumatra. Sirombu Beach, with its stunning beaches, attractive spots for surfing, continuously improved infrastructure, and stunning natural panorama, has become one of the leading marine tourism destinations in the region. On the other hand, Aekhula's traditions, which include distinctive dances, cultural values, and regional identity, are a rich cultural heritage that attracts tourists. This combination of natural beauty and cultural strength is likened to a harmonious relationship between lovers, which ultimately led to West Nias being known as the “Earth of Aekhula.” By applying the case study method, this research reveals how the synergy between natural and cultural attractions in West Nias provides a special attraction for tourists to come and enjoy various tourist and cultural attractions. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable tourism in the region by utilizing the existing natural and cultural potential in a balanced manner.

Abstract

This research formulates a regenerative marine tourism strategy for the Momparang Archipelago, East Belitung, using the seven regenerative tourism principles. Key results show that conservation initiatives, such as coral reef restoration and environmental education, have engaged local fishermen and tourism operators in sustainability efforts. However, challenges in waste management and governance remain, requiring stronger frameworks to ensure long-term success. The study employs a qualitative approach with Logical Framework Analysis (LFA) to systematically identify goals, objectives, activities, and expected outcomes. Leveraging the region's unique cultural and ecological assets, such as shipwreck sites and Bugis Buton heritage, has been shown to enhance the destination’s appeal. Community involvement in conservation and waste management is critical to achieving a sustainable tourism model. Key recommendations include the formation of a multi-stakeholder regenerative tourism advisory board and continuous public education on sustainable practices. Future research should explore the broader application of regenerative tourism principles in other coastal areas, focusing on collaboration between government, local communities, and the private sector. Additionally, innovative waste management strategies that involve active tourist participation should be further investigated to enhance both environmental sustainability and visitor experience. This research offers a foundation for transforming the Momparang Archipelago into a model for sustainable regenerative tourism.
