Abstract

The expanding population and constrained agricultural land in Kendari City have catalysed the adoption of hydroponics as a solution for urban agriculture. Nevertheless, its efficacy remains suboptimal, underscoring the necessity for a study that explores the pivotal role of farmers' communication behaviour in facilitating innovation adoption and enhancing agricultural performance. The present study aims to analyse the relationship between farmers' communication behaviour and hydroponic farm performance. The research approach employs a quantitative method with a survey design. The population under scrutiny in this study consists of all hydroponic farmers in Kendari City, totalling 17 individuals. The data was collected through a census. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompassed various methods, including surveys, interviews, literature reviews, and documentation. The survey method was utilised as the primary technique for the collection of quantitative data from respondents via a structured questionnaire. The research variables were farmers' communication behaviour and hydroponic farming performance. The data analysis techniques employed in this study encompassed quantitative descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The findings suggest that hydroponic farmers exhibit high levels of communication behaviour, particularly in terms of knowledge, intensity, and skills, which contribute significantly to farm performance categorised as "very good" in terms of quantity, quality, and timeliness. Correlation analysis indicates a positive and very strong relationship between communication behaviour and farm performance (ρ = 0.912; Sig. = 0.000), suggesting that an enhancement in farmers' communication behaviour is indicative of an optimal hydroponic farm performance. In the context of urban hydroponic agriculture, communication behaviour is no longer merely a supporting variable in the diffusion of innovation; rather, it is a primary determinant that integrates technical, managerial and market adaptation aspects to comprehensively enhance farm performance and sustainability.

Abstract

The inadequate understanding amongst farmers regarding balanced fertilisation, particularly with regard to fertiliser types, application rates and timing, has resulted in suboptimal rice cultivation practices in Ranomeeto Village, leading to low productivity in comparison to the potential yields that could be achieved. The objective of this study is to analyse the knowledge possessed by farmers in Ranomeeto Village, Ranomeeto Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, with regard to fertilisation and rice productivity. The present study employs a quantitative approach. The study population consists of all farmers engaged in irrigated rice farming in Ranomeeto Village, totalling 106 farmers. The sampling method employed was a form of probability sampling, specifically simple random sampling. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error, resulting in a sample of 51 irrigated rice farmers. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompassed in-depth interviews, surveys, and documentation. The study's variables encompassed the farmers' knowledge levels concerning fertilisation and the productivity of irrigated rice. The subsequent data analysis employed quantitative descriptive analysis, utilising percentage and productivity formulas corresponding to the variables under study. The findings of the study suggest that farmers in Ranomeeto Village have relatively good knowledge levels regarding rice field fertilization, particularly with regard to the utilisation of urea and Phonska fertilizers, as evident in their recall, comprehension, and application skills. However, their analytical, evaluative, and creative skills remain deficient. It is evident that farmers' comprehension of manure utilisation is found to be inadequate at all levels of expertise. Rice productivity in Ranomeeto Village reached 4.7 tons/ha, which is higher than the district and sub-district levels. However, this productivity figure is still not optimal when compared to the productivity potential of the high-yielding Inpari 32 variety. Therefore, improved extension services and the application of more appropriate and balanced fertilization techniques are required.

Abstract

The rice field cultivation program is one of the government's strategic policies in an effort to strengthen national food security through the expansion of agricultural land. In addition to being oriented towards increasing food production, the implementation of this program also has the potential to impact environmental sustainability and social conditions. This study aims to analyze community perceptions of the environmental impact of the implementation of the People's Rice Field Cultivation Program in Bombana Regency. The research was conducted in November 2025 using a survey method and a descriptive approach. The location was determined purposively, with the sample of respondents determined using simple random sampling. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively using a perception assessment scale. The results show that community perceptions of the implementation of the rice field cultivation program vary at each stage of the activity. In the pre-construction stage, particularly during the socialization activities, the community showed high and generally positive perceptions. Meanwhile, during the land acquisition and several construction stages, community perceptions were moderate, indicating concerns about potential environmental and social impacts. In general, the rice field cultivation program in Bombana Regency is perceived to provide economic and social benefits, but it still requires more planned environmental management and a participatory approach so that environmental sustainability and community acceptance can be optimally maintained.

Abstract

The capacity of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is a critical factor that determines a business's ability to manage resources, enhance competitiveness, and maintain business sustainability amid an increasingly dynamic business environment. The development of MSME capacity is influenced by a combination of internal and external factors. The present study aims to analyse the internal and external factors affecting the capacity of culinary MSMEs in Kendari City, using the Tunggala Fried Onion MSME as a case study. The research employs a qualitative approach, adopting a case study design. The present study involved a total of 20 informants, consisting of one key informant and 19 primary informants. The selection of these informants was conducted using purposive sampling. The data were collected through a variety of methods, including observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and a comprehensive literature review. The analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data was established through the implementation of source triangulation and methodological triangulation. The research results indicate that the capacity of the Tunggala Fried Onion SME is classified as developed and adaptive, as demonstrated by the business’s ability to maintain sustainability for more than eight years, improve production quality and quantity, expand its marketing network, adopt digital technology, and build institutional networks that support business development. Internal factors influencing the SME’s capacity include human resources, financial management, production systems, and marketing. The human resources possess good production experience and skills, although they still face limitations in digital literacy. Structured financial management, standardized production processes, and marketing strategies that combine conventional and digital marketing further strengthen the business’s capacity. Meanwhile, external factors influencing the capacity of MSMEs include technology, government support, socioeconomic conditions, and the role of supporting institutions. The use of production technology and marketing digitization improves efficiency and market access, while government support, conducive socioeconomic conditions, and assistance from relevant institutions contribute to strengthening business capacity. Enhancing the capacity of MSMEs requires synergy between internal and external factors to support the sustainability and competitiveness of businesses over the long term.

Abstract

This study aims to find out industrial activities in Punggawukawu Village, Benua District, South Konawe Regency (Case Study of PT. Karya Alam Perdana). The selection of the research location was taken based on several considerations, namely Punggawukawu Village is a village closest to PT. Karya Alam Perdana and Punggawukawu Village have the potential for oil palm plants. The population in this study is 53 oil palm farmers. The sampling technique used in the study is a census method that requires the declaration of the entire population, resulting in a research sample of 53 oil palm farmers. Data was collected through survey techniques, interviews, literature reviews and documentation. The variables observed in the research on industrial activities of PT. Karya Alam Perdana consists of labor acceptance, transportation facilities, purchase of raw materials and environmental processing. The data was analyzed using a quantitative descriptive analysis method which was processed using the class interval formula. The results of the study show that industrial activities are classified as moderate. Industrial Activities of PT. Karya Alam Perdana is in the medium category because only the indicators of raw material purchases are doing well. The presence of this industry increases the selling price of palm oil for oil palm farmers. However, three indicators have not been implemented, namely the acceptance of labor which is now more selective, the lack of transportation facilities for crops and the suboptimal environmental treatment as well as the transparency of the Corporate Program Responsibility (CSR) program. The industrial activity of PT. Karya Alam Perdana needs to prioritize local labor, provide transportation for farmers, and implement Corporate Program Responsibility (CSR) transparently to improve efficiency and relationships with oil palm farmers in Punggawukawu Village Benua District South Konawe Regency.

Abstract

Feed is the largest cost component in smallholder livestock farming, accounting for more than 70% of total production expenses. Therefore, efforts to improve efficiency through the utilization of locally available, high-nutrient feed materials have become a key strategy to enhance farmers' welfare. Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea) is one of the promising tropical forages that can serve as a substitute for concentrate feed due to its high crude protein content, ease of cultivation, and potential to reduce methane emissions. This study aims to examine the contribution of adopting Cajanus cajan-based feed processing technology to livestock productivity and the economic empowerment of small-scale farmers. The research employed Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and structured interviews. The findings indicate that Cajanus cajan leaves can be effectively adopted by farmers, supporting self-sufficiency in feed production and reducing costs by up to 30%. From a socio-economic perspective, the adoption of this technology contributes to increased income, strengthens farmer group capacities, and promotes the development of markets for livestock products based on natural forages. While awareness and interest levels among farmers reached approximately 95%, the rate of sustained adoption remains below 40%, indicating the need for institutional support and ongoing training. Thus, the adoption of Cajanus cajan feed technology is not only technically and economically relevant but also aligns with the broader agenda of sustainable tropical livestock development. These findings demonstrate that the use of local resources can serve as an effective solution to the high cost of commercial feed. Furthermore, enhancing farmers’ knowledge and skills in feed processing is crucial to ensure the successful implementation of this innovation.

Abstract

Farmers’ groups are farmer institutions that play a crucial role in enhancing members’ capacity through learning, cooperation, and agricultural business development. A farmers’ group’s ability to carry out its institutional functions serves as the basis for determining its capability class, which reflects the level of development of the farmer organization. This study aims to analyze the capability classes of irrigated rice farmers’ groups based on their institutional functions in Ranomeeto Village, Ranomeeto Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey method. The study population consists of 106 farmers who are members of six active farmers’ groups under the Sri Kembang Farmers’ Association (Gapoktan). The sample of 51 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula and selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire, literature review, and documentation, and were then analyzed descriptively and quantitatively using scores and percentages. The results indicate that the farmers’ groups’ capabilities vary across the institutional functions analyzed. Relatively high capabilities were observed in the areas of building cooperation with other parties, utilizing facilities and infrastructure, and taking corrective actions to address group issues. Conversely, areas requiring improvement include active member participation, cooperation in carrying out activities, and the recording and documentation of group activities. Overall, the farmer groups have demonstrated fairly good capabilities in carrying out their institutional functions, particularly in operational aspects and the development of institutional networks. However, strengthening organizational capacity, group administration, and member engagement is still necessary to improve the effectiveness of farmer group management. The findings of this study provide important information for agricultural extension workers and local governments in formulating strategies for the sustainable institutional strengthening of farmers.

Abstract

The development of urban agriculture through hydroponic farming systems has emerged as a promising alternative for enhancing food security and improving community welfare amid the increasing scarcity of agricultural land. The success of hydroponic farming management is determined not only by farmers' technical competence in cultivation practices but also by their motivation, which is reflected in their farm management performance. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of farmers' motivation and describe their performance in managing hydroponic farming systems in Kendari City, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed. The study involved 17 hydroponic farmers selected purposively based on their experience and active engagement in hydroponic farming. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that farmers' motivation develops dynamically through the interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation was driven by livelihood needs, the desire to increase income, and commitment to business development, whereas extrinsic motivation was influenced by a supportive business environment, accessible markets, and the relatively short hydroponic production cycle. The interaction between these dimensions forms a motivational reinforcement cycle, which strengthens farmers' commitment to sustaining and expanding their farming enterprises. Furthermore, this dynamic motivation is translated into improved performance, as reflected in increased production output, the ability to maintain product quality, and timely farm management, collectively conceptualized as integrated farmer performance capability. The findings suggest that the success of hydroponic farming depends not only on technical cultivation practices but also on strengthening farmers' motivation and their adaptive capacity to respond to changes in the agribusiness environment.

Abstract

Agricultural extension workers play a crucial role in facilitating technology transfer, strengthening farmer capacity, and supporting agricultural development. The effectiveness of extension services is significantly influenced by the capacity and work ethic of extension workers. This study aims to assess the level of extension capacity, work ethic, and performance of agricultural extension workers and to examine the influence of capacity and work ethic on their performance in Kendari City, Indonesia. A census approach was used involving all 49 agricultural extension workers working at the Agricultural Extension Center and the Department of Agriculture in Kendari City. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS software version 4.0. The results showed that extension workers demonstrated high levels of extension capacity (mean score = 3.8), work ethic (mean score = 3.7), and performance (mean score = 3.7). The SEM-PLS analysis revealed that Extension Capacity had a positive and significant effect on improving extension worker performance. This also applies to the work ethic of agricultural extension workers, which has a positive and significant impact on their performance. The stronger an extension worker's capacity, the higher their performance. Similarly, a strong work ethic leads to higher performance. Implementing extension services with extension workers who have a high level of capacity and work ethic can improve their performance, which in turn can impact overall productivity.

Abstract

The successful adoption of agricultural innovations is determined not only by the superiority of the technology itself but also by the social system that shapes the innovation adoption process within farming communities. The Linear Trap Barrier System is an environmentally friendly and effective technology for controlling rice field rat infestations; however, its adoption among farmers remains relatively limited. This study aimed to analyze the role of the community's social system in the diffusion of LTBS innovation for rat pest management in lowland rice farming in Atolanu Village, Lambandia District, East Kolaka Regency, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed. Informants were selected using the snowball sampling technique and included rice farmers, farmer group leaders, agricultural extension officers, and community leaders involved in the introduction and implementation of LTBS. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings revealed that the social system plays a pivotal role in shaping the diffusion of LTBS innovation through three interrelated dimensions: social structure, social norms, and opinion leaders. The social structure indicated that informal relationships among farmers exerted a greater influence than formal farmer organizations in fostering trust toward the innovation. Social norms showed that the absence of collective regulations regarding LTBS implementation, together with a prevailing culture of awaiting empirical evidence before adopting new practices, contributed to the gradual diffusion of the innovation. Furthermore, village heads, farmer group leaders, agricultural extension officers, and pioneering farmers functioned as opinion leaders by strengthening farmers' confidence through exemplary practices and direct experience. Strengthening the social system through trust-based networks, social learning, and local leadership is therefore considered an effective strategy for accelerating the diffusion of LTBS innovation and promoting the sustainability of rat pest management in lowland rice farming.
