Abstract

The utilization of yards by Women Farmers Groups is imperative for ensuring food security; however, the efficacy of this practice is contingent upon the optimal functioning of the group, which, in practice, continues to grapple with numerous impediments. The objective of this study is to analyze the role of the Green Women Farmers Group in utilizing yards in Anawai Village, Wua-Wua District, Kendari City. The research population consists of all 30 members of the Green Women Farmers Group. The sample was determined using the census method. The present study employed a quantitative approach. The data presented herein were collected through a variety of research methods, including surveys, in-depth interviews, and a meticulous review of relevant documentation. The research variables of interest were the role of farmer groups and the utilization of home gardens. The collected data were then subjected to analysis using quantitative descriptive methods. The findings indicated that the Green Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Anawai Village, Wua-Wua District, Kendari City, exhibited a high level of proficiency in the utilization of yards, particularly in its functions as a learning class, a conduit for cooperation, and a production unit. Conversely, the level of yard utilization by its members was found to be moderate, contingent on the diversity of commodities produced and the ensuing benefits obtained. A correlation analysis reveals a robust and statistically significant positive association between group role and yard utilization (r = 0.774; p < 0.05). This finding suggests that effective group function implementation is associated with enhanced yard management and productivity among its members. Women's farmer groups have been shown to make a significant contribution to enhancing the effectiveness of yard management and fostering more productive and sustainable use of local resources.

Abstract

The transition from cocoa farming to oil palm cultivation in Southeast Sulawesi, particularly in Mondoke Village, is attributable to technical factors. Oil palm is regarded as more lucrative, more manageable, and more resilient to pests and diseases than cocoa. The objective of this study is to ascertain the technical factors involved in the conversion of cocoa farming land to oil palm in Mandoke Village, Lambandia Subdistrict, East Kolaka Regency. The informants for this study consisted of farmers who were members of farmer groups and agricultural extension workers. The study's informant pool comprised a total of nine individuals, including eight farmers and one agricultural extension worker. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompassed observation, documentation, and interviews guided by a structured interview protocol. The present study centered on the technical factors that precipitated the conversion of agricultural land. The collected data was then subjected to qualitative analysis. The findings of the study indicate that the technical factors associated with the conversion of cocoa farmland to oil palm plantations, undertaken by farmers in Mondoke Village, are as follows: farmers possess the knowledge necessary for the cultivation of cocoa, yet they recognize that cocoa necessitates more intensive care than oil palms. Regular fertilization and pruning are essential to maintain the health of cocoa trees and prevent overgrowth, which can lead to increased susceptibility to pests such as PBK and Helopeltis. In contrast, oil palm maintenance is less complex, necessitating only the pruning of aged fronds to facilitate harvesting and deter pests. The management of pests, such as caterpillars and rats, in oil palm plantations can be effectively addressed through the implementation of controlled measures, including the application of pesticides and the maintenance of sanitation. Furthermore, the yield of old cocoa trees (over 20–25 years old) is lower, while oil palms demonstrate a longer and more stable production period throughout the year.

Abstract

Fish-based sambal products are considered ready-to-eat foods that are highly susceptible to microbial spoilage during storage, thereby requiring safe and natural preservation strategies. One promising solution is the use of manuru banana leaf extract (MBLE), which contains active antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to examine the effect of MBLE addition on the quality and shelf life of anchovy sambal under accelerated storage conditions. The extract was obtained via ethanol maceration of dried banana leaves and applied to the sambal at concentrations of 0% (control), 2%, 3%, and 4%. Samples were stored at 55 °C for 21 days. Parameters evaluated included pH, total plate count (TPC), and organoleptic attributes such as color, characteristic sambal aroma, off-odor intensity, and texture. Results revealed that MBLE addition had no significant effect on pH reduction but effectively inhibited microbial growth, with the best performance at 4% MBLE, which yielded the lowest microbial count (2.6 × 10⁵ CFU/g). Organoleptic assessment indicated that sambal with 2% MBLE received the highest preference scores in terms of color, aroma, and overall sensory acceptance. Noticeable sensory quality degradation was observed from day 7 of storage. It can be concluded that MBLE is effective in extending the shelf life of anchovy sambal and serves as a promising natural preservative at concentrations between 2% and 4%. Further research is recommended to explore the interaction of packaging methods and storage temperatures on the product’s physicochemical and sensory stability throughout its distribution chain.
