Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of trauma experienced by the character Karang and the development process of the trauma until the process of walking through. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The research data source is the novel "Aku Tak Memenang Hujan" by Sri Puji Hartini, while the research data are in the form of narrative excerpts and dialogues that indicate the traumatic experience of the character Karang. Data collection techniques were carried out through two main techniques, namely documentation and listening and taking notes. The data analysis technique used in this study is the content analysis technique. The results of the study show that the character Karang experienced trauma and developed through several interrelated forms. These forms of trauma include intrusive thoughts, avoidance, and self-defense (hyperarousal), then there is a process of walking through as a form of self-acceptance. This study shows that trauma not only has a psychological impact on individuals, but also influences how individuals understand themselves and their surroundings. The trauma experienced by the character Karang develops gradually until it leads to a process of recovery.

Abstract

This studi examines how the concept of mythological time is interpreted and narrated by the community of Sugihwaras Village, Ngancar District, Kediri, which resides on the slopes of Mount Kelud, and how these mythological narratives coexist with scientific narratives in understanding volcanic eruption phenomena. Using a qualitative approach through ethnographic methods and in-depth interviews with six key informants including village officials, hamled heads, crater gatekeepers, community leaders, and disaster management authorities this study identifies three main findings. First, the Sugihwarsas community reconstructs volcanic time not throught  a linier-scientific chronology, but through thr rhythmic and cyclical Suro ritual calendar, in which eruption events are positioned as manifestation of cosmological relations between humans and the crater’s guardian entities. Second, scientific narratives (PVMBG, BPBD) and mythological narratives (Lembu Suro, Den Bagus Kliwon) do not negate one another but coexist functionally: scientific narratives govern emergency responses, while mythological narratives provide frameworks of meaning, psychological tranquility, and social cohesion. Third, the coexistence of both narratives plays a srategic role in forming and sustaining a collective disaster memory that has proven adaptive, as evidenced by the zero-victim outcome of the 2014 eruption. This study contributes to the fields of  disaster ecology and memory anthropology by proposing the concept of adaptive coexistence as a new analytical framework.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the worldview of Minang noblewomen, the socio-historical context, and the homological relationship between the conflict in Pinto Anugrah’s novel Segala yang Diisap Langit and the historical reality of the Padri War. Employing a qualitative approach and Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism theory, data comprising narrative excerpts, dialogue, and events from the novel were collected through reading-and-noting techniques and literature review. The analysis proceeded in three stages: understanding the text’s structure, explaining the socio-historical context, and analyzing the homological relationship. The study yielded three main findings. First, the worldview of Minang noblewomen is represented through the characters Rabiah and Jintan Itam as guardians of the lineage, women who boldly make decisions, and women living amidst beliefs in myths and curses. Second, the novel’s socio-historical context depicts the decadence of the nobility, the emergence of the Padri movement, and the ideological conflict between matrilineal custom and the patriarchal value system. Third, a homological relationship was identified between the conflict in the novel and the history of the Padri War, particularly regarding characters, value systems, symbols of violence, and conflict resolution. Through this relationship, the author conveys a critique of violence while honoring the resilience of Minang women in preserving their cultural identity.

Abstract

Individuals with non-heteronormative gender identities and sexualities in Indonesia continue to face systemic social pressure through religious, legal, and media discourses. Akasa Dwipa's novel Rima Rima Tiga Jiwa presents three marginal characters Silvy (a waria), Susanto (bisexual), and Rima (a sex worker) whose representations will be examined using a queer theory framework. This study aims to analyze the construction of gender identity, synthesize the representation of sexuality, and critically examine forms of resistance to heteronormativity within the novel. The method employed is descriptive qualitative. The study was conducted through intensive reading of Rima Rima Tiga Jiwa as the primary data source. Data consist of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs representing the gender identity, sexuality, and resistance of marginal characters. Data analysis employed Judith Butler's gender performativity framework (1990) and Michel Foucault's notion of sexuality as a discursive product (1978). The study identified that gender identity is represented as an active construction built through language, the body, and early-life experiences, sexuality is represented as a product of power discourse that is never neutral, and resistance manifests in four complementary forms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship between the narrative of mental health disorders experienced by the main character and the life phenomena of the current millennial generation. The theory used in this study is literary sociologist Alan Swingewood who views that to understand literary works in their entirety is not only based on internal elements, but must also be associated with external factors to explore the meaning implicit in a literary work. These external factors will make it easier to understand the historical background, culture, social conditions of people's lives, and the psychology of the author that influenced the creation of the work. Thus, this study focuses on three main problems, namely (1) the triggering factors for the main character to experience acute depression, (2) the relationship of the novel narrative regarding the form of depression in the main character with the current phenomenon, and (3) the main criticism of the author as the background for the creation of the novel. Based on these three problems, this study uses a qualitative descriptive method with collection techniques in the form of reading and taking notes. In addition, the analysis of data findings from the research object is through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that the triggering factors for the main character experience acute depression due to social pressure, existential crisis, and social alienation. In addition, the narrative in the novel also shows the connection between the problems of the current millennial generation which is portrayed through the main character who experiences forms of depression in the form of loneliness, resignation, despair, and disappointment. Through the form of depression described by the author as complex in the main character, the presentation of mental health issues in the novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Before Death by Brian Khrisna highlights the standardization of happiness created by the surrounding environment as the background for the creation of the novel.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of life values represented in the film Petualangan Sherina (2000) by Riri Riza, examine their relation to the social life realities of Indonesian society, and analyze the potential functions of these values for the community. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literary sociology study based on Ian Watt's perspective, combined with Stuart Hall's constructionist representation concept and Haris Supratno's nine-value concept. Data in the form of dialogs and song lyrics were collected thru the observation-note technique and analyzed thru the stages of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings revealed 51 data points from nine types of life values, which consist of educational values, religious values, heroism values, leadership values, simplicity values, courage values, sacrifice values, mutual cooperation values, and moral values. The representation of these values is related to the social life realities of Indonesian society, both in the post-reform context when the film was produced and in the current social conditions of the present generation. This film has the potential to serve as both an entertainment medium and a social influence. Four potential functions for society as a social influence have been identified, namely didactic function, moral function, social function, and humanistic function.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of youth resistance toward the social system in the novel Kami (Bukan) Sarjana Kertas by J.S. Khairen through the representation of youth ideological values, the social background of the characters, social class inequality, and conflicts of interest between youth idealism and the established social system. This research is motivated by the increasing social pressures experienced by young people, particularly in the areas of education, economics, and socially constructed standards of success. This study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The theoretical framework applied was Alan Swingewood’s sociology of literature, which views literary works as reflections of social life. The data source of this research was the novel Kami (Bukan) Sarjana Kertas by J.S. Khairen. Data were collected through documentation techniques involving reading, identifying, recording, coding, and classifying quotations relevant to the research focus. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The results of the study indicate that: (1) youth ideological values are represented through the spirit of striving for a better future, criticism of the education system, realistic attitudes toward life, parental expectations regarding education, and resistance to social and economic limitations; (2) the social background of the characters reflects the lives of lower-middle-class communities facing economic pressure, low self-confidence, and demands to achieve success through education; (3) social class inequality is portrayed through stigma toward students from non-prestigious universities, differences in family social status, unequal future opportunities, and the presence of social solidarity as a response to injustice; and (4) conflicts of interest emerge through tensions between youth idealism and a social system that continues to prioritize academic formality and educational status. This study concludes that the novel Kami (Bukan) Sarjana Kertas functions as a medium of social criticism toward the education system and social inequality that still exist in society.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis in the film Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini by Marcella F. P., focusing on personality structure, defense mechanisms, and unconscious motivation of the main characters. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method within a literary psychology approach. The data consist of dialogues, scenes, and characters’ actions collected through visual observation, documentation, and literature review. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that the characters’ personality structures consist of id, ego, and superego, which interact dynamically in shaping behavior. The id appears through spontaneous emotional impulses, the ego functions as a mediator that considers reality, and the superego reflects the internalization of family moral values. Furthermore, various defense mechanisms such as repression, rationalization, and projection are identified as strategies used by the characters to reduce anxiety caused by intrapsychic conflicts. Unconscious motivation also plays a significant role in influencing behavior, particularly related to past trauma, repressed desires, and inner conflicts within family relationships. Therefore, this study demonstrates that film serves not only as entertainment media but also as a representation of complex psychological dynamics within individuals in a family context.

Abstract

Women in the technology industry are often still judged by whether powerful male figures choose to recognize their contributions, rather than by their actual skill or effort. This study looks at the film Swiped (2025) through Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social practice, focusing on the concepts of habitus, capital, and field, to understand how women's agency develops within a male-dominated tech environment. The film follows Whitney Wolfe Herd's career, starting from her early work on Tinder to her later founding of Bumble, and shows how her choices and opportunities are shaped by workplace culture, company structures, and unequal power dynamics. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study closely examines selected scenes, dialogue, and story elements to see how these social structures influence her decisions. The findings show that her professional position is shaped not just by personal skill, but by how her internalized habits, the resources available to her, and the competitive nature of her workplace interact with one another. The film also shows that her sense of agency grows through an ongoing back-and-forth between limitation and opportunity, rather than through one single turning point. Based on this, the study argues that Swiped (2025) is more than a biopic — it works as a cultural text that reflects and shapes how we understand women's agency and power within today's digital industry.

Abstract

Films have become an important medium for representing psychological disorders, enabling audiences to gain a deeper understanding of mental health through fictional characters. Integrating psychological perspectives into film analysis also strengthens the interdisciplinary relationship between psychology, literature, and cinema. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the representation of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) through the three main characters in the stop-motion animated anthology film The House (2022). This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as the analytical framework. The primary data were obtained from the film, while supporting data were collected from books, journal articles, and psychological references related to OCPD. Data were gathered through repeated viewing, observation, and categorization of scenes, dialogues, and character actions based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. The findings reveal that Raymond, the Developer, and Rosa collectively represent four OCPD symptoms: preoccupation with details, perfectionism that interferes with task completion, excessive devotion to work and productivity, and rigidity and stubbornness. Rather than portraying the disorder through a single character, the film distributes these symptoms across multiple narratives, illustrating a distinctive representation of OCPD in an anthology film. This study contributes to a more critical and empathetic understanding of psychological disorders in literary and cinematic studies.
