MUMTAZA (Journal of Arabic Teaching, Arabic Linguistic and Literature) is an open-access journal in the Arabic Education Department. This journal is available for researchers who want to improve knowledge in those particular areas and intend to spread the knowledge as a result of studies. MUMTAZA is a scientific research journal of Arabic language teaching, linguistics, and literature. It is open to anyone who desires to develop knowledge based on qualified research in any field. Submitted papers are evaluated by anonymous reviewers by double-blind peer review for contribution, originality, relevance, and presentation. This journal is published two times a year (June and December). Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the Quizizz application in teaching writing skills (maharah al-kitabah) to students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah. Writing is one of the essential Arabic language competencies that requires intensive practice and appropriate media approaches for optimal learning. In the digital era, the use of technology-based media such as Quizizz is considered effective in increasing students' motivation and engagement. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The findings indicate that the use of Quizizz enhances students’ enthusiasm for learning, enriches the variety of exercises, and develops critical thinking in Arabic writing. Theoretically, these findings align with constructivist learning theory and previous studies that show interactive media can promote productive language skills. The implication of this study highlights the importance of integrating digital media into the Arabic language curriculum, particularly in developing writing proficiency. The appropriate strategy in using Quizizz also assists teachers in designing more enjoyable and effective learning experiences.

Abstract

Arabic is the main medium for conveying revelation in the Qur'an, known to have a deep rhetorical structure and full of expressive nuances. One important element in its aesthetic power and expressive meaning is the existence of majaz, namely the use of figurative language that replaces the literal meaning with another meaning that is conceptually related. In the study of balaghah, majaz is seen as a linguistic instrument that allows the development of meaning without deviating from the rules of language. However, the existence of majaz in the Qur'an has become a widespread discussion and has given rise to different views among commentators. Various previous studies have examined linguistic aspects of the Qur'an, such as phonology, morphology, and syntax, and how these three elements contribute to the beauty and power of the divine message. A number of studies have highlighted how phonological elements in the recitation of the Qur'an can strengthen the emotional impact, for example by creating an impression of softness or firmness through the choice of certain sounds. There are also studies that explore the relationship between phonological form and semantic meaning in the verses of the Qur'an. However, there are still few studies that deeply and integratedly examine how phonology, morphology, and syntax interact in forming the emotional effects felt by readers and listeners of the Qur'an. This study aims to describe and analyze the phenomenon of majaz in the Qur'an between acceptance and rejection among interpreters. The novelty of this study lies in its approach that examines majaz comprehensively from various linguistic and theological perspectives.

Abstract

This study aims to understand and analyze the evaluation instrument of istima' skills in Arabic language learning for grade VII of Madrasah Tsanawiyah. This study is a library research with a qualitative approach, where data is collected from various literature sources such as textbooks, scientific articles, and academic journals. Data analysis uses the content analysis method, which involves data processing, in-depth reading, description, and interpretation of data to produce a comprehensive understanding. The results of the study indicate that although there have been various efforts in developing the maharatul istima' evaluation instrument, its implementation in the field still faces various challenges, such as limitations in compiling valid questions, selecting the right audio material, and technical obstacles when using technology. However, the Arabic language book for grade VII of Madrasah Tsanawiyah has implemented the istima' evaluation form in various exercise formats such as answering oral questions based on text, multiple choice questions, completing sentences with isim isyarah, and giving marks according to or not according to the conversation heard. This study is expected to be the basis for developing more effective and contextual evaluation instruments in improving students' listening competence in Arabic.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative approach with a literature study design to explore the use of the Al-Lughotul 'Arabiyah printed module in teaching Arabic to early childhood learners in Islamic elementary schools (madrasah ibtidaiyah). The main subject of the analysis is the Grade 2 Arabic language module published by the Directorate of KSKK Madrasah, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 2020. The data were analyzed by identifying the module's content structure, instructional approach, types of learning activities, and the relevance of the themes to the developmental needs of young learners. The analysis focused on how the module facilitates communicative, visual, and thematic learning tailored to the cognitive characteristics of early learners. Data analysis techniques included in-depth reading, thematic categorization, and interpretation of the instructional meaning embedded in the module. Validity was ensured by comparing the module content with theories of early childhood language learning and the curriculum document KMA No. 183 of 2019. The findings show that the module emphasizes contextual, activity-based learning, vocabulary repetition, phonetic practice, and the integration of social and religious values. This study provides insight into how government-issued Arabic textbooks can serve as effective media for developing Arabic language learning from an early age.

Abstract

This study aims to translate the Arabic children’s story Al-Anf Al-Ajib by Muḥammad Aṭiyyah Al-Ibrāshī and analyze its cultural adaptation compared to the well-known story of Pinocchio in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive method with philological and intertextual approaches, the study reveals that Al-Anf Al-Ajib is a free adaptation of Pinocchio, modified to align with Arab cultural values. The changes include character names, settings, and moral focus, demonstrating the importance of cultural adaptation in children’s literature translation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe cohesion in the Arabic language. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing library research methods. The findings indicate that cohesion in Arabic consists of several types. In this paper, the author presents two main types: lexical cohesion (tamasuk mu‘jami), which includes repetition (tikrār), synonymy (tarāduf), antonymy (taḍādd), hyponymy (ishtimāl), and collocation (muṣāḥabah); and grammatical cohesion (tamasuk naḥwī), which includes substitution, ellipsis, reference, and conjunction. This study is expected to contribute to clarifying the structure of cohesion in Arabic in a systematic and applicable manner, so that it can be utilized in the development of learning materials, such as in tadrībāt lughawiyyah at the intermediate level and similar contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using Sirah Nabawiyah short movies on the improvement of students’ critical thinking skills in maharah kitābah (Arabic writing skills). The research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 30 students of MTs. Mambaus Sholihin Suci Manyar Gresik, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a written test developed based on critical thinking indicators, including analytical, evaluative, inferential, and logical reasoning skills. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The results showed an increase in the students’ mean scores from 60.66 in the pretest to 83.66 in the posttest. The statistical analysis revealed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in students’ critical thinking skills before and after the treatment. These findings suggest that the use of short movies effectively stimulates higher-order thinking skills, particularly in strengthening students’ critical thinking abilities.
