Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) in shaping the political orientation of santri within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). The study is grounded in the understanding that pesantren function not only as religious educational institutions but also as spaces for cultivating civic awareness and value-based political orientation. This research employs a qualitative approach through literature study and conceptual analysis of educational practices in pesantren. The findings indicate that the implementation of PPKn in pesantren is not limited to formal classroom instruction, but is deeply embedded in the pesantren culture, including the role modeling of kiai, deliberative traditions, and the collective life of santri. Pancasila values are not taught in isolation; rather, they are integrated with Islamic teachings, which contributes to the formation of a moderate, inclusive, and state-oriented political outlook among santri. This reflects the strategic role of pesantren in fostering political literacy grounded in moral and religious values. The study concludes that civic education in pesantren serves as an essential medium for developing political awareness that is not only normative but also practical in social life. Strengthening the integration between Pancasila values and Islamic teachings within pesantren education is therefore crucial in producing santri with mature and responsible political orientations.

Abstract

This study explores the historical renaissance of Islamic education in Indonesia, which signifies a transformative era of holistic and integrative scientific development. Central to this movement is the institutional conversion of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) into the State Islamic University (UIN). Employing a qualitative library research methodology, this inquiry analyzes diverse secondary sources, including scientific journals, academic texts, and credible digital archives. The findings indicate that the UIN system successfully produces graduates who are not only proficient in science and technology but also deeply rooted in Islamic scholarship. By implementing a paradigm of scientific integration, UIN positions itself at the forefront of the Islamic educational revival in Indonesia. Ultimately, this institutional evolution serves as a vital engine for developing human resources capable of navigating the complexities of the modern global landscape without compromising spiritual values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of emotional intelligence on the academic achievement of public high school students through a systematic literature review approach. Emotional intelligence is defined as an individual's ability to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions adaptively, which includes five main dimensions: self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, empathy, and social skills. This study uses a systematic literature review method guided by PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). A literature search was conducted through the Google Scholar, Sinta, and DOAJ databases using the keywords "emotional intelligence", "learning achievement", "emotional intelligence", and "academic achievement" with a publication period of 2014–2024. Of the total 87 articles identified, screening based on title and abstract resulted in 43 articles, then selection based on inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in 18 articles that met the requirements for in-depth analysis. The inclusion criteria included articles discussing the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement, written in Indonesian or English, having gone through a peer-reviewed process, and published in accredited journals. The synthesis results show that emotional intelligence has a positive and significant influence on the academic achievement of public high school students, with contributions ranging from 21% to 34% (R² = 0.21–0.34; p < 0.05). The dimensions of self-regulation and self-motivation were shown to be the most dominant components in influencing student academic achievement. In addition, this relationship was moderated by factors of self-confidence, parental support, and a conducive school climate. The conclusion of this study confirms that the development of emotional intelligence needs to be systematically integrated into educational programs in schools to produce students who excel academically as well as emotionally and socially mature.

Abstract

The low achievement of students in the subject of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) indicates the urgency of pedagogical innovations that can simultaneously escalate engagement and academic performance. In relation to this, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in optimizing the learning outcomes of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) for 11th-grade students at SMAS Nurul Hikmah Jonggol. This study applies the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles, where each cycle includes the phases of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study consisted of 36 students, with data collection instruments in the form of learning outcome tests and instructional activity observation instruments. Data analysis was conducted using a mixed-methods approach; quantitative data were descriptively processed to calculate the class average and the percentage of classical learning completeness, while qualitative data were explored to represent the degree of participation and engagement of students during the learning process. The research results confirm a significant improvement in learning outcomes following the implementation of the PBL model. This is reflected in the fluctuation of the average class score, which increased from 72 at the pre-cycle stage to 80 in Cycle I, and reached 92 in Cycle II. In line with this, the percentage of classical learning completeness also experienced a progressive increase from 66.6% to 86.1% in Cycle I, and up to 97.2% by the end of Cycle II. These findings demonstrate that the PBL model is effective in stimulating learning outcomes, active participation, critical thinking skills, and collaborative skills in PAI learning. Based on this empirical evidence, PBL can be positioned as an innovative and contextual alternative learning strategy to continuously improve the instructional quality of PAI at the secondary education level.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly influenced the formation of religious values among students at the elementary education level, including those in Islamic primary schools. Students are no longer limited to learning religious values from formal education and family environments, but are also exposed to diverse and sometimes conflicting values through digital media. This study aims to examine in depth how students negotiate religious values between the school environment and digital media exposure at MI Al Hasanah. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The participants consist of three students and one Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teacher selected purposively. Data validity is ensured through source triangulation and method triangulation techniques. The results of the study indicate that students possess a basic understanding of religious values through structured learning and habituation activities at school. However, the implementation of these values is not always consistent, especially outside the school environment. Students actively engage in a process of negotiating values when encountering digital content that differs from religious teachings, often balancing between personal interests and normative expectations. The study concludes that the formation of religious values is dynamic and influenced by both internal awareness and external digital exposure, highlighting the need for a more contextual and adaptive approach in Islamic education.

Abstract

This research explores the translation of imported teaching theories into practice by secondary school teachers in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The focus of the problem is the disconnect between global teaching theories and practices in East Africa. Despite ongoing promotion of learner-centered, competency-based and constructivist pedagogies by governments and international entities, teaching practices have not changed or have only changed partially. This research aims to unravel the meanings, interpretations, resistance and transformations teachers make to imported teaching theories in their sociocultural and institutional contexts. This study used a qualitative comparative study design, with 72 teachers in 24 secondary schools. Semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and documents were analysed. The study shows that teachers engage in pedagogical translation in the following four ways: selective incorporation, syncretic blending, instrumental appropriation and transformative adaptation. These modes involve factors including examination, language policy, material resources and teacher experience. The research finds pedagogical translation is not an "implementation failure" but a process of adaptation and innovation. It suggests that education policies should be mindful of teacher agency, assessment practices to support pedagogical practices, and context-sensitive pedagogies.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into religious education systems has become an increasingly pressing topic amidst the global digitalization wave. This study aims to map the scientific landscape, growth trends, and conceptual structure of research regarding the application of AI in Islamic Education. Employing a bibliometric analysis approach assisted by the R-package Biblioshiny software, this study analyzed 30 selected documents published between 2018 and 2025. The results indicate that this topic is a rapidly emerging research field, characterized by a high annual growth rate of 51.12%. A significant surge in publications was identified starting in 2023, strongly correlating with the emergence of generative AI technologies. Geographically, Indonesia dominates the global contribution map as the most productive and most cited country, far surpassing other nations. Thematic analysis reveals that current research focus centers on the use of ChatGPT in higher education and the development of intelligent technologies for Quran memorization. This study concludes that although still in its nascent stage, the integration of AI in Islamic education holds immense potential but requires broader international research collaboration.

Abstract

This article aims to support Paulo Freire's views regarding education, which are similar to banking-style methods. This research aims to understand the concept of Critical Education, which can serve as a reference, becoming the main aspect when examining the culture of social classes, which are always revolving around the order of social life. Currently, the qualitative research method aims to better explain the objects that will be studied in this research, especially those related to the education of the oppressed and the concept of critical education by Paulo Freire, with authentic facts in his thinking. He assumes critical thinking to have a pattern of protecting the oppressed (Mustadaffin), in this case, very closely related to slaves or small people who are always oppressed. So, in his thinking, Paulo Freire cares about small communities that are always oppressed, especially those without parents (orphans).

Abstract

Digital transformation has significantly changed the educational paradigm, including within formal schools based in pesantren. This study aims to analyze the challenges faced by teachers and identify strategies for dealing with digital transformation in the pesantren environment. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, analyzing various scientific literatures and relevant theoretical studies. The results indicate that the main challenges for teachers include limited digital literacy, a lack of structured training, infrastructure constraints, and resistance to change due to concerns about the degradation of traditional values. Strategies identified to overcome these challenges involve increasing teacher competence through the TPACK  framework, implementing blended learning models, and integrating Islamic values into technology use. This study concludes that successful digital transformation in pesantren-based schools depends on the teacher's ability to balance technological innovation with the preservation of the pesantren's traditional characteristics and moral values.

Abstract

Islamic Education Institutions in Indonesia (LPI) often face double pressures: implementing prophetic values amidst modernization and digitalization. This article uses narrative review with thematic synthesis approach, screening from 212 artcles into 14 scientific articles indexed by Sinta1-3 and Scopus during 2019-2026 period. The selected articles discuss leadership development strategies in Islamic boarding schools, madrasas, and private Islamic schools in Indonesia. Prisma protocol was used in seleecting and reviewing the articles. There are 5 themes taken from the thematic analysis: 1) prophetic and transformational synergy as the foundation; 2) social capital as a leadership infrastructure; 3) the paradox of integrating technology and Islamic tradition; 4) hidden structural bariers in leadership implementation; and 5) directions towards an integratif leadership model. The five themes propose an Adaptive Islamic Leadership Model (Manajemen Kepemipinan Islam Adaptif / MKIA) with its three pilars: the SATF+Shura prophetic values, managerial-transfromational competencies, and social capital-based contextual responsivemness. This contribution shares a rarely discussed topic of the integration of the Islamic educational management theory using separate theoretical lenses and identifying theoretical propositions as well as the structural bariers.
