Abstract

This study aims to explore the manifestation of language politeness in the interactions between medical record officers and patients at the Kuranji Health Center in Padang City. Employing a descriptive research method, data were collected through observation, recording, and note-taking techniques to capture the nuances of communication within this healthcare setting. The analysis focused on the realization of six politeness maxims: wisdom, generosity, appreciation, humility, consensus, and sympathy. The findings reveal a varied application of these maxims, with 8 instances of the wisdom maxim, 1 of generosity, 8 of appreciation, 1 of humility, 27 of consensus, and 24 of sympathy. These results indicate that the communication between medical record officers and patients is largely characterized by polite language, with a strong emphasis on consensus and sympathy. The predominance of these two maxims suggests a communicative environment aimed at fostering understanding and support, reflecting the ethical and empathetic standards expected in healthcare interactions. This research underscores the importance of language politeness in healthcare communication, highlighting how it contributes to the overall patient experience and the effectiveness of healthcare delivery

Abstract

This study explores the role of daily reading journals centered on folklore in fostering moral literacy and character development among junior high school students. Engaging with Indonesian folktales encouraged students to reflect on moral messages and articulate their understanding of values such as respect, honesty, responsibility, and perseverance. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from student journal entries, observations, and educator interviews. The analysis focused on identifying recurring moral themes within the folklore and assessing students’ responses to them in their daily reflections. Findings indicate that regular journal reflections on folklore improve students’ engagement with reading materials and deepen their comprehension of moral concepts embedded in cultural narratives. Through consistent exposure to stories that highlight ethical dilemmas and positive traits, students develop a nuanced understanding of moral values and apply these lessons to their lives. Educators observed increased students' empathy, critical thinking, and awareness of the importance of moral conduct. This study underscores the potential of integrating folklore into school literacy programs as a valuable tool for character education. By situating moral instruction within the culturally relevant context of folklore, schools can make character education more engaging and accessible for students. The research suggests that folklore-based literacy activities could effectively reinforce positive values in educational settings, providing a framework for moral instruction that is both culturally relevant and pedagogically impactful.

Abstract

This study aims to understand verbal and nonverbal language used in communication, particularly in the context of language disorders and difficulties among children with disabilities. Language, as a medium of communication, can be expressed both verbally and in writing, and plays a crucial role in conveying ideas. This research focuses on analyzing the spoken language of children with disabilities to identify linguistic disorders and changes in language within their social environment. The findings reveal four distinct uses of verbal language and three uses of nonverbal language among children with disabilities, which vary according to their situation, condition, and age. These results are expected to contribute to the field of Sociolinguistics by providing insights into the dominance of nonverbal language in communication and the forms of language disorders observed in children with disabilities, particularly in the case study of a child named Aisyah. The study also identifies the factors contributing to language difficulties when verbal and nonverbal communication do not align.

Abstract

This study explores how children's ego and selfhood are portrayed in the poetry collection Hal yang Pribadi by M. Fatan DZ. The book was selected because its poems present children's voices in a unique and reflective manner. The research employs Roland Barthes’ theory of symbolic semiotics, particularly the concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth, to examine how meaning is constructed through words, imagery, and symbols in the poems. The analysis reveals that the narrative voice of “I” in the anthology is not neutral. Children’s identities in the poems are often shaped by social values such as family norms, gender roles, and adult expectations. The “I” in the poetry emerges as a figure in the process of self-formation yet is also guided by the symbolic systems embedded in language. This study concludes that children's poetry does more than convey beauty and moral messages—it serves as a symbolic space in which children's identities are negotiated and represented in relation to the surrounding world.

Abstract

Smart courses, being the effective tool for education equity, are faced with high dropout. This study investigates the factors affecting the complete of the smart courses of economically disadvantaged undergraduates from the psychology drive perspective. Nvivo tool was used to encode the screened 392 literature from Web of Science and the Engineering Index to explore the generic relationship among free nodes. According to the Theory of Planned Behavior, 17 hypotheses and corresponding Structural Equation Modeling were established, and 257 valid questionnaires(age of participants from 19 to 24)were collected for analyzing, and experts were invited to do an interview. The results indicated that behavioral attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control all had significant positive effects on students’ intention to engage in sustainable learning. Among them, perceived behavioral control demonstrated the strongest path coefficient (β = 0.499, p < 0.001), highlighting students’ self-efficacy and perceived resource controllability as key driving forces in promoting continuous learning. Although the effects of behavioral attitude (β = 0.343, p < 0.001) and subjective norms (β = 0.274, p < 0.001) were relatively weaker, the clarity of learning goals, expectations from others, and social support still played a positive role in motivating learning engagement. Different from the conventional view, this paper finds out that the most effective point is perceived behavioral control instead of attitudes for economically disadvantaged undergraduates for persistent learning behavior. This study provides a novel perspective on explaining economically disadvantaged undergraduates' sustainable smart courses learning behavior and offers practical recommendations to enhance course completion rates.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of AI-assisted microlearning-based instructional videos for teaching Basic Japanese Grammar 1 (Bunpou I) at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This research addresses the persistent challenge of limited classroom time and the lack of accessible, engaging self-study resources for first-semester Japanese learners, who often struggle with unfamiliar scripts and complex grammar structures. Recognizing the learning preferences of Generation Z—who favor short, visually rich, and technology-driven content—this study integrates Artificial Intelligence tools into the instructional design process to develop concise, focused explainer videos. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology based on the PPE model (Planning, Production, Evaluation), the study involved syllabus analysis, AI-assisted media production, and expert validation, followed by a preliminary student trial. The instructional video received high feasibility scores from both media (3.62) and content experts (3.60), and student feedback indicated improved comprehension and engagement. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic integration of AI tools—such as Gemini AI, Canva Magic Media, and D-ID AI—for storyboard generation, visual content creation, and narration. The findings suggest that this AI-integrated microlearning model offers a scalable and effective instructional design framework for foreign language education, particularly for beginner learners in digital learning environments.
