Abstract

Students are a central element in Islamic education, which is aimed at the comprehensive development of the whole person. In educational studies, student development is understood through various paradigms, including nativism, which emphasises innate factors; empiricism, which emphasises the influence of the environment and experience; and convergence, which combines these two factors. On the other hand, Islamic education has a unique concept of human nature, namely fitrah as a sacred basic potential bestowed by Allah SWT since birth. This article aims to examine the paradigm of student development based on the perspectives of nativism, empiricism, and convergence, as well as to analyse its relevance to the concept of fitrah in Islamic education. This study uses a qualitative approach through library research by analysing relevant books, journal articles, and scientific sources. The results show that each paradigm makes an important contribution to understanding student development, but has limitations when viewed in isolation. The concept of fitrah in Islamic education complements these three paradigms by emphasising that student development is the result of the interaction between innate potential, environment, and guidance from divine values. These findings confirm that Islamic education should ideally integrate all these aspects in a balanced manner so that the development of students' fitrah can take place optimally, in intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions.

Abstract

The Islamic educational environment plays a strategic role in shaping the personality, character, and religious beliefs of students. The educational environment is not only understood as the physical space where the learning process takes place, but also encompasses non-physical dimensions such as values, culture, traditions, and a religious atmosphere that influence the continuous development of individuals. This article aims to conceptually examine the concept of the Islamic educational environment and its various types based on the perspective of Islamic education. The study focuses on the concept of the three centres of education, namely the family environment, school or madrasah, and community. The family environment is understood as the main foundation in shaping children's morals and character, schools play a role as formal institutions that develop the intellectual, moral, and spiritual aspects of students, while the community becomes a social space for the actualisation of Islamic values in real life. The results of the study show that these three educational environments are closely related and must work together harmoniously so that the objectives of Islamic education can be achieved optimally. A conducive and religious Islamic educational environment is expected to produce a generation that is faithful, knowledgeable, noble in character, and responsible in social life.

Abstract

Grammar mastery plays a crucial role in developing students’ English proficiency; however, grammar instruction in junior high schools is often perceived as abstract and disengaging. Many students experience difficulties in understanding possessive pronouns due to traditional rule-based teaching methods that lack contextual relevance and meaningful application. This study aimed to improve seventh-grade students’ understanding of possessive pronouns through the implementation of the Contextual Learning Approach (CLA) at SMP Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar. This research employed a qualitative Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles involving 32 students of class VII-5. The data were collected using tests, observation sheets, field notes, interviews, and documentation. The implementation of contextual learning activities emphasized real-life situations, such as identifying ownership through classroom objects and personal belongings, to help students construct grammatical understanding meaningfully. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ grammar mastery and classroom engagement. The students’ mean score increased from 60.06 in the pre-test to 83.25 in the final test, while the percentage of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion (70) improved from 37.5% to 90.6%. Qualitative findings indicated increased motivation, participation, confidence, and collaboration among students during the learning process. In conclusion, the Contextual Learning Approach effectively enhanced students’ understanding of possessive pronouns by linking grammatical concepts to real-life contexts. The study implies that contextual-based grammar instruction can create more meaningful, interactive, and student-centered learning environments, and it is recommended for teaching other grammatical topics in junior high school.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill in learning English, as it enables students to understand written texts effectively and construct meaning from what they read. One of the main viralslot problems faced by junior high school students is difficulty in identifying the main idea of a text, which often results in poor overall comprehension. This difficulty is commonly caused by students’ limited reading strategies and lack of guided support during the reading process. Therefore, an effective instructional strategy is needed to help students improve their reading comprehension skills. This study aimed to improve students’ ability to identify main ideas through the implementation of the Guided Reading strategy at Grade VIII of SMP Swasta Teladan. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The participants of this study were 30 eighth-grade students. Data were collected using reading comprehension tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension after the implementation of the Guided Reading strategy. The mean score increased from 61.2 in the pre-test to 82.0 in the post-test of Cycle II. Furthermore, the percentage of students who achieved the minimum mastery criterion (70) increased substantially from 13% in the pre-test to 93% in the final test. Observation results also indicated that students became more active, motivated, and confident during reading activities. In conclusion, the Guided Reading strategy was effective in improving students’ ability to identify main ideas and enhancing their overall reading comprehension. This study implies that Guided Reading can be an effective strategy for supporting students’ reading development in junior high school.

Abstract

Writing is one of the essential skills that students must master in learning English, as it enables them to express ideas and convey information effectively. However, many junior high school students still find it difficult to organize their thoughts and develop coherent report texts. This gap between the importance of writing and students' actual performance highlights the need for effective learning media. This study aims to improve students' writing ability in report text through the use of mind mapping media at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 8 Pematangsiantar. The research was conducted using classroom action research (CAR) in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were 30 students of class IX-3. The data were collected through writing tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The results of the study showed that the students' writing ability improved significantly after the implementation of mind mapping media. The improvement could be seen in the students' ability to generate ideas, organize paragraphs, and use correct grammar and vocabulary in writing report texts. The mean score of students' writing increased from 63.4 in the pre-test to 81.2 in the post-test of the second cycle. It can be concluded that mind mapping media effectively enhances students' writing ability in report text. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to use mind mapping as an alternative learning tool to make writing activities more structured, engaging, and easier for students to understand.

Abstract

This study examines gender equality within the family from the perspective of the Qur’an, focusing on a critical analysis of M. Quraish Shihab’s interpretation in *Tafsir Al-Misbah*. The background to this research stems from differing interpretations of Qur’anic verses concerning relations between men and women, which in some cases have led to gender inequality within family life. This study aims to analyse the concept of gender equality in the Qur’an, examine Quraish Shihab’s method of interpretation, and identify the implications of his thinking for Muslim family relations. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research. Data were collected through a review of the Qur’an, exegetical works, and relevant literature, and were subsequently analysed using descriptive-analytical methods and a critical approach. The findings indicate that, according to Quraish Shihab, the Qur’an affirms the equality of men and women in human, spiritual, and moral aspects. Any differences are understood as functional, not hierarchical. In his interpretation, Quraish Shihab employs a contextual, linguistic, and moderate approach, resulting in an understanding that emphasises the principles of justice, reciprocity (mubadalah), and partnership within the family.

Abstract

This study investigates how the Think Pair Share (TPS) cooperative learning strategy influences students’ conceptual understanding in IPAS learning at the elementary level. Conceptual understanding is essential in enabling learners to interpret knowledge meaningfully and apply it across contexts. Nevertheless, classroom practices often remain teacher-centered, limiting student engagement and resulting in suboptimal learning outcomes. A quantitative approach was adopted using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 23 fifth-grade students of SDN 28 Kelakik in the 2024/2025 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved achievement tests (pretest and posttest), supported by questionnaires, observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test with SPSS version 26. The findings indicate a notable improvement in students’ conceptual understanding, reflected by an increase in the average score from 64.70 in the pretest to 77.26 in the posttest. Statistical testing revealed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), confirming that the TPS model has a meaningful impact. These results align with previous studies highlighting the effectiveness of TPS in fostering critical thinking and collaborative learning. Hence, TPS can be considered a practical instructional strategy for enhancing conceptual understanding in elementary IPAS learning.
