Abstract

Writing is one of the essential skills that students must master in learning English, as it enables them to express ideas and convey information effectively. However, many junior high school students still find it difficult to organize their thoughts and develop coherent report texts. This gap between the importance of writing and students' actual performance highlights the need for effective learning media. This study aims to improve students' writing ability in report text through the use of mind mapping media at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 8 Pematangsiantar. The research was conducted using classroom action research (CAR) in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were 30 students of class IX-3. The data were collected through writing tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The results of the study showed that the students' writing ability improved significantly after the implementation of mind mapping media. The improvement could be seen in the students' ability to generate ideas, organize paragraphs, and use correct grammar and vocabulary in writing report texts. The mean score of students' writing increased from 63.4 in the pre-test to 81.2 in the post-test of the second cycle. It can be concluded that mind mapping media effectively enhances students' writing ability in report text. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to use mind mapping as an alternative learning tool to make writing activities more structured, engaging, and easier for students to understand.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in improving students’ ability to write narrative texts at Grade XII of SMA Negeri 1 Siantar. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, each involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The participants were 32 students of Class XII-Science 2 in the academic year 2024/2025. Data were collected through writing tests, observation sheets, and field notes. Quantitative data were obtained from pre-test and post-tests to measure students’ writing performance, while qualitative data were used to examine students’ participation, motivation, and classroom interaction during the implementation of CLT. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students’ narrative writing skills, particularly in content development, organization, vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, and mechanics. In addition, students showed higher engagement, confidence, and collaboration during communicative writing activities such as group discussions, storytelling, and peer feedback. The results suggest that Communicative Language Teaching is an effective and meaningful approach for enhancing students’ narrative writing ability and creating a more interactive learning environment. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers apply CLT-based strategies in writing instruction to improve students’ communicative competence and writing proficiency.

Abstract

Writing is one of the essential skills in English learning, yet many vocational high school students still struggle to express their ideas coherently and grammatically. Peer teaching strategy has been widely recognized as an effective approach to enhance students’ language skills through collaborative learning, but limited studies have investigated its impact on writing descriptive texts in the vocational school context. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of the peer teaching strategy on students’ ability to write descriptive texts at SMK 1 Tamansiswa Pematangsiantar. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test administered to one class of students which is XI MPLB 2. The findings revealed a substantial improvement in students’ writing performance, where the mean score increased from 56.4 in the pre-test to 79.8 in the post-test. The result of the paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between the two means with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the peer teaching strategy had a significant effect on students’ writing achievement. In conclusion, peer teaching effectively improved students’ writing ability in descriptive texts by fostering cooperation, confidence, and peer feedback

Abstract

This study explores the use of Google Docs as a collaborative tool to support the revision process in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) academic writing. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, the study involved six EFL university students enrolled in an academic writing course at a private university in Indonesia. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Google Docs facilitated continuous and multi-stage revision through features such as commenting, suggestion mode, and real-time editing. Peer feedback played a central role in shaping students’ revisions, particularly in improving clarity, organization, and language accuracy. Students also perceived several benefits, including increased awareness of writing weaknesses, greater participation, and reduced anxiety during revision. However, challenges such as unclear feedback, unequal participation, and technical issues were also identified. The study concludes that Google Docs supports a process-oriented and interactive approach to revision and has the potential to enhance collaborative academic writing when accompanied by appropriate pedagogical guidance

Abstract

This study analyzes the motivational impact and linguistic problems arising from the use of the song “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars as instructional material in an Indonesian junior high school EFL classroom. The objectives of this study are to examine students’ learning motivation when songs are integrated into English instruction and to identify linguistic difficulties encountered during the listening activity. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design complemented by quantitative observational data. The qualitative data were obtained from researchers’ classroom observation notes and analysis of students’ responses during guided lyric discussion, which were used to identify linguistic problems at semantic, morphological, syntactic, phonological, and pragmatic levels. The quantitative data were derived from a motivation observation checklist. Students’ motivation was operationalized through four observable indicators: attention, participation, confidence, and anxiety, each scored dichotomously (observed/not observed) and converted into percentages. The learning activity was conducted in a single 80-minute classroom meeting involving 30 eighth-grade students. The findings reveal that the use of the song positively affected students’ motivation, as reflected in high levels of attention and participation, increased confidence, and reduced anxiety. However, students experienced linguistic difficulties, particularly in understanding idiomatic expressions, contractions, phonological reductions, and implicit pragmatic meanings in the song lyrics. This study concludes that while songs function as effective affective tools in EFL instruction, explicit linguistic scaffolding is necessary to ensure meaningful comprehension. Due to the limited duration and single-class implementation, the findings should be interpreted cautiously.
