Abstract

The Earth faces the threat of destruction due to human activities, such as carbon dioxide emissions of 200 tons per second, destruction of 750 tons of topsoil, logging of 47,000 hectares of forests, and neglect of 16,000 hectares of vacant land every day. On the other hand, the population growth of 1 billion people per decade is further burdening the planet. This situation demands fundamental changes in various fields, including the preservation of local wisdom. However, the advancement of modern knowledge has caused local wisdom to be increasingly marginalized by most people, so that it can only be found in certain indigenous communities, one of which is the Sampulonrua Indigenous people. This study aims to find out how the Patumbu Katallassang tradition is implemented by the Sampulonrua Indigenous people, analyze the relationship between local wisdom and environmental management in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals 15 Life on Land, and describe the implementation of this traditional event. This study uses qualitative methods with ethnographic and descriptive approaches. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation to understand the cultural values underlying the tradition. Data analysis techniques are carried out descriptively with an inductive approach, identifying relevant main themes from field data. The result of this research is that the tradition of Patumbu Katallassang is a tradition found in Bulutana village, Gowa Regency which is the main foundation of the Sampulonrua Indigenous people in managing the natural resources around them. In the tradition of patumbu katalassang, there are two traditional events that are routinely carried out every year, namely appalili and assaukang which are carried out at ballak lompoa. For this reason, Sustainable Developmant Goals 15 Life and Land supports the presence of the Patumbu Katallassang Tradition.

Data collection techniques used in this research included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques were used to measure students' communication skills using percentages. The results of this study indicate that learning with the discovery learning model can improve the communication skills of Class IX A students at SMP Daarussalaam Jakarta. This is evidenced by the data obtained. In cycle 1, only 23% of students met the very good communication skills category, while 20% of students were still in the fair category. Compared to cycle 2, it shows that 57% of students have a very good category, then 43% of students have a good category, and there are no longer any students in the fair or poor category. Therefore, learning through the discovery learning model needs to be implemented in the learning process to improve students' communication skills.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve the learning outcomes of Social Science (IPS) students in class VIII.1 at SMPN 33 Padang. The main issue was the low average score of 63.33, with only 50% of students achieving the minimum passing grade (≥70). To address this issue, the study utilized the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach integrated with a problem-based learning model. The research employed a classroom action research method conducted over two cycles. Data collection techniques included learning outcome tests, observations, and interviews, while data analysis was performed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative methods. The results demonstrated significant improvements. In the first cycle, the average score increased to 69.89, with 65% of students achieving the minimum passing grade. However, observations revealed that some students remained passive during learning. Based on these reflections, the second cycle focused on enhancing student activity and engagement, resulting in an average score of 83.3, with 90% of students meeting the passing criteria. Furthermore, students showed greater enthusiasm and active participation in group discussions. In conclusion, the TaRL approach implemented through the problem-based learning model effectively enhanced the learning outcomes of Social Science students. This study recommends that teachers adopt similar approaches and educational institutions support their implementation.

Abstract

The increasing commercialisation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has led to the widespread adoption of marketisation strategies to catch the attention of prospective students. In this regard, the current study examined how Tanzanian HEIs, both public and private, leverage the 4Ps (product, price, place, and promotion) model to shape the choices of prospective applicants. Employing a mixed methods research approach with an embedded design, qualitative and quantitative data were collected by using interview, questionnaire and document review. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve selected staff members, including public relations officers (PROs) and registrars from six HEIs. Additionally, an online questionnaire was distributed to 100 students using convenience sampling. Quantitative data were summarized in descriptive tables and analysed using inferential statistics such as Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis Test, while qualitative data were thematically examined. Qualitative analysis unveiled that HEIs in Tanzania employ diverse program offerings, brand identity enhancement, tuition-based revenue models, and industry partnerships to influence students' choices during the application process. Quantitative analysis displayed variances in the perceived effectiveness of marketing strategies utilized by Tanzanian HEIs. Significantly, differences between public and private universities were observed regarding the use of product and place as marketing strategies. These results suggest that Tanzanian HEIs have embraced a comprehensive marketing approach, integrating the 4Ps model to shape prospective students' decisions effectively. The study advocates for HEIs to enhance their brand identities collaboratively and expand their partnerships globally to enhance visibility in terms of price, product, promotion, and place as outlined in the 4Ps model. Public-private collaborations to enhance access and equity were found to be underutilized.
