Abstract

ABSTRACT The Covid-19 pandemic is a shared threat that results in a multidimensional crisis. However, the response of countries was contrary to what was expected. During a pandemic crisis — at a time when international solidarity is urgently needed — countries are on the contrary “inward-looking”. The only country that emerged in the early phase of the pandemic crisis and offered assistance in handling the global pandemic was China. This raises questions about China's motives and reasons for providing foreign aid. Why did China emerge as a donor when other countries did the opposite?Culture significantly influences the direction of China's foreign policy. This can be seen in his political behavior and foreign policies issued. The provision of foreign aid in handling the Chinese pandemic is also based on traditional Chinese values, that's why this study uses Zhao Tingyang's Tianxia theory which tries to build China's view of international relations based on traditional Chinese values. How China views the world is conceptualized in the Tianxia theory. China's foreign aid for pandemic recovery believes in the concepts of internalization of world order, relational relativity, and  Confucianism Improvement. These values belong only to China, which explains why China has emerged as a differentiator on the international stage. This study shows that unconventional IR theory is not just an alternative but an appropriate analytical tool to analyze specific issues. Future research is expected to find gaps in international relations and contribute to a new understanding of issues in international politics.

Abstract

Saudi Arabia has launched military intervention in Yemen Since March 26, 2015. The military intervention resulted in a high humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has received a lot of criticism from the international community for various violations committed. This research aims to examine the causes of Saudi Arabia’s military intervention in Yemen through the individual level analysis perspective. This research examines idiosyncratic factors in Saudi Arabia's military intervention through the perspective of political psychology, more specifically the theory of narcissism-aggression. This research is an explanatory type and uses a qualitative approach. With this framework and methods, this research aims to analyze personality factors of key individuals in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen in 2015-2017. The researcher assumed that the key individual was Prince Muhammad bin Salman. The results of this research shows that the personality of Prince Muhammad bin Salman is very influential in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen. The power of Prince Muhammad bin Salman and the political conditions of Saudi Arabia when military intervention has been launched, enabled Prince Muhammad bin Salman to stop or continue Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen. The narcissistic personality of Prince Muhammad bin Salman kept him from continuing Saudi Arabia’s military intervention in Yemen.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe diplomatic crisis between Qatar and Saudi Arabia in 2017 had a significant impact on relation and regional stability in the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain severed diplomatic relations with Qatar by withdrawing their ambassadors from Doha, imposing an embargo, and blockading Qatar's territory. This internal dispute was considered to be the worst dispute in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) defence and security history. In the midst of a crisis like this, the GCC, as a regional intergovernmental organization in Persian Gulf, should have a certain role and influence to improve relations and maintain regional stability. The purpose of this research is to analyse GCC’s role and influence in the Qatar-Saudi diplomatic crisis. The author will use Clive Archer's institutional liberalism which defines the roles of international organizations as arena, instrument, or actor. The qualitative data used in this research was obtained from journals, books, websites, and documentations or official statements from the GCC and the parties. The results of this research indicate that GCC’s role was a tool or instrument used by its member countries to carry out foreign policy and achieve their respective national interest. Key words: Diplomatic Crisis, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Institutional Liberalism

Abstract

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel continues to this day, with many countries and international organizations supporting the action. Nonetheless, there is a country that prohibits such behavior and expresses its support for Israel in its fight against what is considered anti-Semitism. Austria is the name of that so-called country. The purpose of this research is to determine why Austria decided to support Israel in its fight against BDS using the Memory, Trauma and World Politics theory by Duncan Bell. The researcher gathered various supporting data from books, websites, international news, and official statements from the Austrian government using the literature review technique. This is an explanatory research that aims to discover the reasons why Austria supports Israel in its fight against BDS, which is related to the country's past history and existing trauma. The findings of this study show that there are memories and traumatic events in the past in the form of anti-Semitism against the Jewish community in Austria, which caused a sense of responsibility and solidarity from Austria towards Israel as an existing Jewish state. Austria's sense of responsibility and solidarity eventually encouraged the establishment of current policy.
