Abstract

Coffee husk fermentation (CHF) might be utilized as an alternative plant protein source. This research evaluated dietary CHF supplementation's effects on growth for striped catfish. This study consisted of five grade levels of CHF as a treatment. The treatments were P0 (without the addition of CHF), P1 (addition of 6% CHF), P2 (addition of 12% CHF), P3 (addition of 18% CHF), and P4 (addition of 24% CHF). The results determined that dietary CHF inclusion had no significantly different effect on specific growth rate (SGR) and feed efficiency (P > 0.05). However, the P1 group (6% CHF) produced the best protein retention (PR), which was significantly different from the control (P0) and other CHF treatments (P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in survival rates among the treatments. The inclusion of CHF up to 24% in the diet was found acceptable, as it did not negatively impact the striped catfish’s overall health or growth performance. Although growth rate, feed efficiency, and survival did not significantly differ (P > 0.05).

Abstract

One type of freshwater ornamental fish that is popular and in demand is the goldfish (Carassius auratus) because it has an attractive color that appears on its body, so food is needed that can trigger the appearance of attractive fish colors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving carrot flour and the right dose to increase the brightness of the color and growth of goldfish. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with an experimental method, four treatments, and three replications. The treatments tested were 0% carrot flour + 100% commercial feed (A), 5% carrot flour + 95% commercial feed (B), 10% carrot flour + 90% commercial feed (C), and 15% carrot flour + 85% commercial feed (D). The parameters observed were an increase in color brightness, absolute weight gain, feed conversion ratio, survival rate, and water quality (temperature, DO, and pH). The addition of carrot flour can improve the color brightness of goldfish but has no significant effect on absolute weight growth, feed conversion ratio, or goldfish survival. Water quality parameters measured during the study were still within a reasonable range for goldfish rearing.

Abstract

The Java-native bronze featherback (Belida Jawa), Notopterus notopterus, has been designated as a protected species under limited protection status by the Decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia No. 83 of 2024, with captive breeding efforts undertaken for conservation and aquaculture to meet increasing consumer demand. This study provides a preliminary evaluation of artificial fertilization techniques in N. notopterus, focusing on hormone-induced spawning using Ovaprim™. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of hormone injection, optimal egg stripping timing, and hatching success under controlled water quality conditions. Two female broodstock received different dosages of Ovaprim™, and successful egg stripping was conducted after a 41-hour latency period. Fertilization rates of 30% and 11.23% were observed for the first and second females, respectively; however, hatching success remained extremely low at 0.52% for the first female, with no larvae hatching from the second. Despite maintaining water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity, and total dissolved solids within acceptable limits, the poor hatching rate suggests that additional factors, including ammonia concentration and dissolved oxygen levels, may have impacted embryonic development. This study establishes a foundational basis for artificial reproduction in N. notopterus, emphasizing the need for further research to optimize hormone protocols, sperm viability, and environmental conditions. These findings contribute to the advancement of aquaculture strategies for the conservation and sustainable management of this ecologically important species.

Abstract

Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the leading commodities. Environmental factors are crucial to intensive vannamei shrimp production. Changes in the plankton's composition can show the ecosystem's balance. This research was carried out from March to June 2022 in intensive ponds in the Gending district, Probolinggo Regency, East Java. Sampling was carried out over seven weeks. The population was calculated using a haemocytometer. The species diversity was calculated using the Shannon-Wiener formula, and the uniformity index was calculated using the Odum formula. The abundance of zooplankton did not have a significant relationship with water quality parameters because each species was affected by different water quality parameters. The N/P ratio value does not directly impact the plankton population in this shrimp pond, where the results obtained from the pond waters have low diversity, which means that the waters have a low level of uniformity. There is no dominance of certain species

Abstract

One of the failures of freshwater fish farming is often caused by the attack of A. hydrophila bacteria. This bacterial attack can be prevented by administering immunostimulants derived from G. verrucosa extract. This study aims to determine the non-specific immune response of striped catfish to Aeromonas hydrophila infection following supplementation of G. verrucosa extract in feed. Five doses were administered in this study: 1 ml, 1.5 ml, and 2 ml per kg of feed, as well as a positive control and a negative control. Blood samples were collected every week after infection, and the parameters observed were total erythrocyte and leucocyte counts, as well as leucocyte differential counts. The results showed that G. verrucosa extract significantly increased blood cell counts. The highest dose was found to be the most effective in increasing the non-specific immune response of striped catfish against A. hydrophila infection

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of Chlorella vulgaris and iron nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) as dietary supplements on the health of Cyprinus carpio. Eighty juvenile carp (156.8 ± 2.14 g) were divided into four groups: control (T0), 10% C. vulgaris (T1), 85 mg/kg Fe-NPs (T2), and a combination of both (T3), fed for 60 days. Biochemical, enzymatic, and histological parameters were analysed. The results showed that C. vulgaris supplementation (T1) provided the most significant benefits by reducing glucose levels. The combination group (T3) also showed improved glucose regulation. Serum ALT and AST were lowest in T3, while T1 showed muscle enzyme reduction (ALT: 50.53 ± 2.49 U/l; AST: 596.1 ± 88.15 U/l). Histologically, T1 enhanced muscle fibre density and spleen immune activity, whereas T3 mitigated Fe-NPs-induced iron accumulation. In conclusion, while all treatments improved fish health, C. vulgaris alone offered the most consistent metabolic, enzymatic, and tissue benefits, highlighting its potential as a sustainable aquaculture feed additive.

Abstract

High cost and limited availability of fish oil (FO) in aquafeeds have prompted the search for alternative lipid sources. Palm oil (PO), a widely available and stable vegetable oil, may serve as a viable replacement in tilapia diets. This study investigated the effect of partially replacing fish oil (FO) with PO on the growth performance, feed utilisation, and survival of Nile tilapia cultured in cages. A 16-week feeding trial with four experimental diets was formulated by replacing FO with 0% (T0), 25% (T1), 50% (T2), and 75% (T3) PO. The diets were fed once daily to triplicate groups of 10 juvenile tilapia (7.75 ± 0.94 g), stocked into 12 cages (1 × 1 × 1 m³). Results indicate that there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) among treatments for final weight, final length, total biomass, specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain, survival rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). The results suggest that PO can partially replace FO up to 50% in Nile tilapia diets without compromising growth, feed efficiency, or survival rate. This highlights PO’s potential as nutritionally viable lipid sources for sustainable aquafeed development.

Abstract

Broodstock size is crucial for determining reproductive success in freshwater lobsters (Cherax quadricarinatus), influencing fecundity and egg diameter. This study aims to analyze the effects of broodstock size on fecundity and egg diameter and their correlations to optimize hatchery management. Thirty egg-bearing female C. quadricarinatus were categorized into three size groups: small (10.5–12.5 cm), medium (12.6–14.5 cm), and large (14.6–16.5 cm). Fecundity and egg diameter were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and regression analysis. The results showed that larger females produced a significantly higher number of eggs (p < 0.05), while smaller females had larger egg diameters. Regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between body size and fecundity but a negative correlation with egg diameter. This study concluded that, among the tested size groups, medium-sized broodstock (12.6–14.5 cm) exhibited the most optimal balance between fecundity and egg size, making it the preferred choice for hatchery management. These findings provide valuable insights for improving broodstock selection and enhancing seed production efficiency in C. quadricarinatus aquaculture

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of fireweed leaves (Crassocephalum crepidioides) as a dietary supplement on the growth of climbing perch (Anabas testudineus). The study employed a completely randomised design with five treatments, each replicated three times. The treatments administered were as follows: A (5% commercial feed_CF), B (4% CF + 1% fireweed leaves_FL), C (3% CF + 2% FL), D (2% CF + 3% FL), and E (5% FL). For 40 days, climbing perch (31.71 g ± 3.61) were reared in aquariums (water volume 10 L) at a density of 1 fish/L. The parameters observed included weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and daily feed intake. The results showed that the addition of fireweed leaves significantly improved the growth of climbing perch. The best treatment was obtained with a combination of 3% commercial feed (CF) and 2% fireweed leaves (FL). Therefore, this study concluded that fireweed leaves can be used as a feed supplement to support the growth and survival rate of climbing perch.

Abstract

This study looks at how differences in body shape and behavior between male and female Argulus japonicus influence their survival after separating from their host. A total of 200 specimens (100 males and 100 females) were collected from infected goldfish (Cyprinus carpio) in Sidoarjo, East Java. Each parasite was then observed individually in aerated petri dishes at a consistent room temperature of 28 °C. Microscopic observations showed that males tend to have a more elongated and slender body, while females are generally shorter and rounder. This difference is likely related to reproductive needs, especially egg production in females. The results also indicate a clear difference in survival between the sexes. Females frequently detach from the host to lay eggs, a process that appears to cause stress and may reduce their lifespan. On the other hand, males are more likely to remain attached to the host, which may help them maintain a more stable condition and live longer. Overall, these findings suggest that reproductive behavior plays an important role in determining how long these parasites can survive outside their host. This information could be useful for developing more effective control strategies in aquaculture
