Abstract

This study determined the effects of dietary Rucah fish meal on the performance and protein efficiency ratio of local chickens. Two hundred day-old local chicks (initial BW: 42.4 g; CV: 7.48%) were raised for eight weeks and assigned to a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of five dietary treatments with four replicates of 10 birds each. The treatments were as follows: T0 = diet containing 12% Rucah fish meal, T1 = diet containing 14% Rucah fish meal, T2 = diet containing 16% Rucah fish meal, T3 = diet containing 18% Rucah fish meal, and T4 = diet containing 20% Rucah fish meal. Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein intake, protein efficiency ratio, slaughter weight, and carcass percentage were also recorded. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and parameters showing significant effects were further analyzed using Duncan’s multiple range tests. The inclusion of Rucah fish meal from 12% to 20% did not significantly affect (P>0.05) any of the measured parameters, including feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein intake, protein efficiency ratio, slaughter weight, and carcass percentage. Overall, the results of this study indicate that Rucah fish meal can be included in local chicken diets at levels up to 20% without any adverse effects on growth performance, protein utilization, or carcass yield, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable and locally available alternative protein source for poultry production.

Abstract

The broiler industry faces rising input costs and increasing demands for production efficiency, making housing system selection a key factor in technical and economic performance. This study analyzed differences in production performance and cost of production (COP) under open house, semi-closed house, and closed house systems in commercial contract farming in a humid tropical region. Secondary data from 33 broiler production cycles in West Java were analyzed using ANOVA, Games–Howell post hoc test, and Spearman’s correlation. Housing system significantly affected FCR, performance index (PI), and COP, but not slaughter age. The closed house system produced the highest PI, while the lowest COP was observed in the semi-closed house system. FCR showed a very strong positive correlation with COP, whereas ADG and PI were significantly negatively correlated. Feed efficiency is the main determinant of COP, and the semi-closed house system provides an optimal balance between biological efficiency and economic performance.

Abstract

The use of natural feed additives as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters has gained increasing attention. However, evidence regarding their specific effects on carcass traits and fat deposition in broilers is limited and inconsistent. This study provides new evidence of the role of Sauropus androgynus leaf flour in modulating growth performance and lipid distribution in broiler chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Katuk leaf flour on carcass characteristics and fat deposition. A total of 75 broiler chicks were reared for 28 days and randomly assigned to five dietary treatments, with five replicates per treatment and three birds per replicate: a control diet and diets supplemented with 40, 60, 80, and 100 g/kg of Katuk leaf flour. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that Katuk leaf flour supplementation significantly increased slaughter and carcass weights (P<0.05), whereas the carcass percentage was not affected (P>0.05). Notably, abdominal and breast fat deposition was significantly reduced (P<0.05), indicating improved lipid utilization and more efficient energy partitioning. In conclusion, supplementation with Katuk leaf flour at 80-100 g/kg has strong potential as a natural feed additive to enhance broiler productivity and carcass quality by reducing excessive fat deposition without compromising carcass yield.

Abstract

The use of oil palm fronds (OPF) in cattle diets is limited by their high fiber content and low digestibility. This study evaluated the effects of MOL-fermented OPF supplemented with DL-methionine and L-lysine HCl on the performance, digestibility, and economic efficiency of local crossbred bulls. The study was conducted from March to May 2019 at the Marihat Perkasa Cattle Farm in the Simalungun Regency of North Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 12 local crossbred bulls aged 12–18 months with an average initial body weight of 211.17 ± 39.04 kg were arranged in a randomized block design with four dietary treatments and three body weight blocks. The rations were formulated as complete feeds containing 45% roughage and 55% concentrate feed. Treatments were as follows: T0 = concentrate + field grass, T1 = concentrate + unfermented OPF, T2 = concentrate + MOL-fermented OPF, and T3 = concentrate + MOL-fermented OPF supplemented with 0.25% DL-methionine and 0.25% L-lysine HCl based on the total ration as-formulated basis. For T2 and T3, OPF was anaerobically fermented for seven days using 300 mL MOL inoculum per 50 kg fresh OPF, with 1% urea and 4% molasses. The cattle were adapted to the diets for two weeks before data collection, followed by a 60-day feeding trial. Dietary treatment significantly affected all variables (P<0.05). T3 produced the highest feed intake (7.48 ± 0.316 kg/head/day), average daily gain (1.27 ± 0.205 kg/head/day), dry matter digestibility (72.23 ± 6.58%), organic matter digestibility (73.65 ± 6.26%), and income over feed cost (1,438,012 IDR/head), as well as the lowest feed conversion ratio (8.61 ± 1.03). In conclusion, MOL-fermented OPF supplemented with 0.25% DL-methionine and 0.25% L-lysine HCl improved the performance, digestibility, and economic efficiency of local crossbred bulls.

Abstract

Soybean meal is a major protein source in livestock diets, and maintaining soybean quality during storage is critical for feed safety and animal health. However, soybeans are susceptible to quality deterioration due to lipid oxidation, which can be accelerated by unfavorable temperature and humidity conditions and may vary substantially across climatic regions. This study aimed to quantify climate-driven storage risks by simulating the coupled evolution of temperature, moisture content, and peroxide value (PV) in bulk-stored soybean. A one-dimensional radial transient model was implemented in Python to describe heat transfer by conduction, moisture migration by diffusion, and lipid oxidation as temperature- and water activity-dependent processes with Arrhenius kinetics. The climate boundary conditions were derived from the monthly meteorological data for four representative cities: Jakarta (humid tropical), Athens (Mediterranean), Minneapolis (cold temperate), and Lagos (tropical monsoon) over a 180-day storage period starting on October 1. Simulations showed strong thermal inertia in the silo core and climate-dependent gradients near the wall, with warming under tropical climates and cooling under seasonal and cold ones. Moisture variations remained limited in the bulk and were mainly confined to a thin near-wall region owing to slow internal diffusion and boundary equilibration. PV increased monotonically with storage duration and exhibited strong climate dependence, with the highest oxidation risk predicted for warm and humid climates and the lowest for cold climates. Overall, the framework provides a quantitative tool for comparing soybean storage quality risks for animal feed across climatic regimes and supports climate-adapted management strategies to reduce the oxidative deterioration of soybeans.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of training in reducing processing defects (cutting errors) in poultry production. The research was conducted in Samarinda City, Indonesia (Districts of North Samarinda, South Samarinda, Samarinda Kota, Samarinda Ulu, and Sungai Pinang) from October to November 2024. A quantitative survey design was used. The sample consisted of 50 slaughter workers selected through purposive sampling, with the criteria requiring active employment and a minimum of one year of slaughtering experience. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with three sections (demographics, slaughter technique comprehension/skills, and a standardized operational observation protocol) to evaluate the completeness of severance of the trachea, esophagus, and major blood vessels in the neck region. Statistical analyses included independent samples t-tests, correlations, and regression modeling. The t-test results indicate a statistically significant disparity in the miss-cut rates between trained and untrained workers (t = 13.198, p < 0.05, critical t = 2.0106), demonstrating that training significantly improves cutting accuracy. Regression analysis revealed that the model accounted for 45.6% of the variance in miss-cut occurrences (R2 = 0.456). Notably, training emerged as the sole significant predictor, with a negative coefficient (β = -0.4201, p < 0.05), suggesting that it directly reduces errors. In contrast, variables such as work experience had no statistically significant influence. These findings underscore the critical role of targeted training programs in mitigating processing defects and provide actionable insights for quality control in poultry processing operations.

Abstract

Artificial insemination (AI) is one of the key reproductive technologies in beef cattle development, as its success is influenced by multiple factors, including breeder characteristics, technical management, and environmental conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of AI based on non-return rate (NRR), conception rate (CR), and services per conception (S/C) across highland, midland, and lowland areas of the Serdang Bedagai District, and to determine the effects of the number of female cattle, body condition score (BCS), timing of insemination, breeder’s ability to detect estrus, location distance, air temperature, and humidity on AI success. The study was conducted from July to August 2024 in three different topographical areas of Serdang Bedagai Regency: the highland area in the Kotarih District, the midland area in the Bintang Bayu District, and the lowland area in the Tanjung Beringin District. A total of 86 respondents participated in this study. Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the analysis of AI success indicators, the highlands showed the highest conception rate (CR = 67), followed by the midlands (CR = 63%) and lowlands (CR = 48%). The NRR in the highlands, midlands, and lowlands were 59 %, 52%, and 63 %, respectively. The Service per conception (S/C) values were 1.5 in the highlands and midlands and 2.1 in the lowlands, indicating better reproductive efficiency at higher altitudes. Based on the analysis of the NRR, CR, and S/C of the Artificial Insemination program, it was shown that highland and midland areas performed better than lowland areas. Based on the results of the multiple regression analysis, the observed variables simultaneously influenced the number of pregnant cows by 64.3% (R² = 0.643), while the remaining 35.7% was attributed to other factors not examined in this study.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of forage and determine the botanical composition and diversity of forage in swampland as a natural pasture in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The measurement and sampling of forage and the measurement of botanical composition and diversity were conducted using a non-probability approach, specifically purposive sampling. Sampling was carried out using quadrants spread out, which were thrown 50 times using the dry weight rank method. The forage identified on natural pastures in Tandung Village, Tinambung District, Polewali Mandar Regency is 15 forage species, including six grasses, three legumes, and six weeds. Based on the analysis of botanical composition, forages with the highest SDR values were Spartina anglica, Agrortis stolonifera, and Cyperus rotundus. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H′) was 2.29, with a medium category, Shimpson's index (C) had a value of 0.12, with a category of no dominating species, the evenness of species (E) was 0.84, with a stable category, and the species richness index (Dmg) was 1.37, with a medium-low category.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the proximate composition and production performance of feed using sorghum as a substitute for corn. This study was conducted in two stages. The first stage, conducted at the Integrated Animal Husbandry Laboratory of the University of West Sulawesi, included feed preparation and a proximate analysis. The second stage included a feeding trial on laying ducks raised in an experimental pen in Polewali Regency, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The treatments were formulated as follows: P0 = 100% corn and 0% sorghum; P1 = 25% corn and 75% sorghum; P2 = 50% corn and 50% sorghum; P3 = 75% corn and 25% sorghum; and P4 = 0% corn and 100% sorghum. This experiment used a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and five replicates. The results of the first stage showed that sorghum increased crude protein and reduced crude fiber while maintaining comparable metabolizable energy levels. In the second stage, the best overall performance was achieved in P4, which showed the lowest feed consumption (125.52 gram/bird/day), best feed conversion ratio (3.54), highest production index (20.78%) and highest revenue above feed costs (Rp 11,050 cost/bird). These findings indicate that a diet containing 100% sorghum provides the best efficiency and production performance, indicating that sorghum can effectively replace corn as an energy source in laying duck diets.

Abstract

Goat productivity in Indonesia is often constrained by low-quality forage diets and a high prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitic infections, leading to significant economic losses. This study investigated the effects of Leucaena leucocephala supplementation on feed intake, weight gain, and gastrointestinal helminth control in Kacang goats. Using a latin square design, nine goats were assigned to three treatments: P1 (0%), P2 (20%), and P3 (40%) Leucaena leucocephala inclusion in a forage mix of Pennisetum purpuphoides and Gliricidia sepium. The measured variables included daily feed intake, weekly weight gain, and fecal egg counts (FECs). Supplementation significantly (P<0.05) increased the average daily feed intake from 0.89±0.10 kg (P1) to 1.86±0.31 kg (P2) and 1.81±0.37 kg (P3). Growth performance improved markedly, with the P3 group achieving the highest weekly weight gain of 1.08±0.27 kg (154.76 g/day), which was significantly higher than that of the control group. Furthermore, L. leucocephala inclusion led to a substantial reduction in parasite burden; FECs decreased from 290±96.02 EPG (P1) to 190±76.55 EPG (P2) and 140±52.92 EPG (P3). Supplementation at the 40% level reduced helminth infection by approximately 51.7% compared with the control diet. In conclusion, L. leucocephala serves as both a high-quality nutrient source and a functional anthelmintic agent. Although a 20% inclusion rate is sufficient to optimize growth performance, the 40% level provides a superior reduction in gastrointestinal parasite burdens.
