Abstract. Ramli MR, Milow P, Malek S. 2021. Species composition, diversity and traditional uses of plants in homegardens in Kampung Masjid Ijok, Perak, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 22: 1902-1911. The aim of present study was to analyze the status, plant diversity and their utilization in homegardens of Kampung Masjid Ijok, Perak, Malaysia. Forty homegardens were selected for detailed study: 9 were large (>1,500m2), 11 medium (901m2 to 1500m2) and 20 small (<900m2). A total of 207 plant species belonging to 78 families were recorded. Among the usable components, food plants dominated the homegardens with a proportion of 43.3% followed by ornamental (27.8% ) and medicinal (24%) plants. Large homegardens were dominated by food, medicinal and ornamental plant species, medium homegardens food and medicinal plant species, and small homegardens ornamental plant species. Frequency of species occurrences increased with the increasing homegardens size. The highest Shannon-Weiner Index was recorded in the large sized homegardens (3.61) and the lowest one in the small-sized homegardens (1.66). Euphorbiaceae (13 species), Araceae (11 species) and Fabaceae (10 species) were the most represented plant families. Shrubs dominated the plants in all homegardens with a proportion of 42 %, followed by trees (29.5%), herbs (23.7%) and climbers (4.8%). Musa paradisiaca L. was recorded as a very frequent species, followed by Cocos nucifera L., Nephelium lappaceum L., Capsicum frutescens L., Carica papaya L, Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf, Mangifera indica L, Curcuma domestica Valeton, Garcinia mangostana L and Manihot esculenta Crantz. Alocasia sanderiana and Aquilaria malaccensis categorized as critically endangered (CR) in (IUCN) Red List were also recorded in the large homegardens. This study suggested that large homegardens are more effective than the small and medium ones for diversification and conservation of plant species.

All six new species and a new record of Curcumawere described with detailed illustrations, photographs, summaries for their distribution, ecology, IUCN conservation status, and followed by a new record and key to 63 species of Curcuma revised and present in Thailand. The study surveyed six new species and a new record of Curcuma to collect, describe, measure, and illustrate the living and spirit specimens under a stereoscopic microscope. Plant materials and photographs were collected in the field from 2018 to 2019. The results of the study described six new species, including Curcuma chantaranothaii Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., C. charanii Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., C. rangsimae Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., C. phrayawan Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., C. puangpeniae Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., C. purpurata Boonma & Saensouk sp. nov., and a first new record of C. peramoena. All six new species were recognized to be endemic to Thailand.

Abstract. Russianzi W, Anwar R, Triwidodo H. 2021. Biostatistics of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda in maize plants in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3463-3469. Fall Armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is an invasive species that has become important pest of maize in Indonesia since 2019. This research was aimed to study the biology and demographic statistics of FAW in maize at Bogor. Daily observations of 132 FAW individuals from egg to death were carried out as the basis for compiling biology and life table. The demographic statistics of FAW were calculated using the Jackknife approach from the basic life table data. ImagoFAW actives at night. Mating activity occurs between 06.00 pm – 04.00 am, while egg-laying activity occurs between 06.00 pm-10.00 pm. Most hatching occurs between 00.00 am - 02.00 am. FAW has 6 larvae instars and there is no difference in stage between larvae that develop into male and female, which is around 15 days. The male pupae stage was longer than the female pupae, 8.78 ± 0.12 days and 7.81 ± 0.15 days. Male and female imagoes have the same life cycle, which is about 10 days. The life cycle of FAW was 32.26 ± 0.41 days, with a preoviposition period of 2.56 ± 0.45 days. Fecundity of FAW reaches 1012.62 ± 99.12 eggs per female imago. The population of FAW in Bogor has an intrinsic growth rate of 0.154 ± 0.001 individuals/day, with gross reproduction rate of 0.154 ± 0.001 individuals per generation, and net reproduction rate of 104.781 ± 0.155 individuals per imago per generation and a generation time of 30.114 ± 0.002 days.

Biodiversitas 22: 1775-1782. Sweet potato has a high economic value because it is often utilized for staple food and industrial raw materials. Balanced fertilization, including inorganic and biofertilizer, is needed to enhance the production of sweet potatoes. Two-year field experiments conducted at two different agro climates were performed to determine the best response of growth rate and yield of sweet potato to reduced inorganic fertilizer and biofertilizer application rates. Three sweet potato clones, Mencrang, Biang, and Rancing, were grown with a combination of inorganic and biological fertilizers in a randomized complete block design of three replications. Results showed that Biang and Rancing have the best response under reduced inorganic and biofertilizer application rate. The application of biofertilizer enabled the reduction of inorganic fertilizer use but still resulted in increased growth rate and tuber yield of potatoes in both locations. However, the application of biofertilizer did not increase the total soluble solids, which is the main indicator of sweetness in sweet potato.

Short Communication: Assessing the state and change of forest health of the proposed arboretum in Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2072-2077. Forest health is the fundamental of sustainable forest management. As such, forest health needs to be continually monitored and maintained. This study assessed the state and change of forest health of the prospective arboretum in Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park (Tahura WAR), Lampung, Indonesia, aiming that the arboretum can serve for integrated conservation and education forest (Tahura War). This research used the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method by combining the parameters of vitality (i.e., tree damage and tree crown condition) and biodiversity (tree species diversity) across four Forest Health Monitoring plot clusters. The results showed there was a change in the state of forest health of the prospective arboretum in Tahura WAR. The first measurement showed that 50% of plot clusters had a status of bad, while 25% was moderate and 25% was good. The results of the second measurement showed that 50% of plot clusters had a status of moderate, while 25% was bad and 25% was good. This finding suggests that the prospective arboretum experienced changes toward better conditions in health status. Even so, it is still necessary to carry out regular forest health monitoring activities to determine trends.

Biodiversitas 22: 1934-1939. Petroleum is a major problem for environmental pollution due to the extensive use, which can reach all parts of the environment. Contaminated environments are required to identify bacterial diversity that has a remarkable ability to tolerate and biodegrade toxic compounds. The process of oil degradation by microorganisms in their natural environment is affected by certain chemical, physical and biological conditions. Bioremediation techniques are powerful for removing oil pollution, which reflects the ability of microorganisms to destroy organic pollutants. In the current study, six bacterial isolates (S1-S6) were isolated from oil-contaminated soils. mineral salt medium (MSM) was used to carry out biodegradation, crude oil degradation was an evaluation by the gravimetric method. After two weeks of incubation showed S5 isolate the greatest efficiency in oil degradation 53.6%, S1 and S6 also gave good capability degradation (47.31% and 44.9%) respectively, while isolates S2 and S3 gave the lowest percentage. All isolates were identified by 16S rDNA amplicons as Pseudomonas stutzeri, Psychrobacter faecalis, Pseudomonas songnenensis, Bacillus cereus, Psychrobacter quanticus strain E9R, and Psychrobacter quanticus strain EA422 according to molecular identification. The current study indicated that hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria specially Psychrobacter can be used to clean soil from crude oil and other industrial discharges.

Abstract. Eddy S, Milantara N, Basyuni M. 2021. Carbon emissions as impact of mangrove degradation: A case study on the Air Telang Protected Forest, South Sumatra, Indonesia (2000-2020). Biodiversitas 22: 2142-2149. Massive degradation in ATPF occurs due to anthropogenic activities that have converted this area into a coconut plantation, fishpond, settlement, and agriculture. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in land cover and the amount of CO2 emission in ATPF and its causes during the 2000-2020 period using remote sensing data. Data from remote sensing were used to obtain area, classification and land cover change in each period; meanwhile, carbon stock, emissions, and CO2 sequestration were obtained from the analysis using LUMENS software. The results showed that the emissions resulting from land conversion in ATPF during the 2000-2020 period were much greater than sequestration. Net emissions of 1,928,076.56 tons of CO2-eq with an annual emission rate of 96,403.83 tons of CO2-eq/year. The largest source of emissions came from the conversion of primary forest, coconut plantation and secondary forest to open areas; while the source of sequestration comes from the formation of primary and secondary forests. There need to be restoration and conservation efforts in this area by the government and the community to restore the function of ATPF as a coastal protection forest. This research is the first study to examine land cover changes in mangrove forests using data analysis methods with LUMENS.

Combination of plant growth-promoting bacteria and botanical pesticide increases organic red rice yield and reduces the Leptocorisa acuta population. Biodiversitas 22: 1686-1694. Organic red rice production faces similar constraints as conventional rice production, namely pest attacks, especially rice earhead bugs (Leptocorisa acuta). The use of synthetic chemical inputs is also not allowed in organic red rice production. This problem can be overcome with the application of botanical pesticides, but the use of botanical pesticides do not promote plant growth. As a solution, a combination formula of plant growth-promoting bacteria and botanical pesticides is required. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a combination of plant growth-promoting bacteria with botanical pesticides in increasing the growth and yield of organic red rice plants and reducing the rice earhead bug population. The research was conducted on organic agricultural land in Jember Regency, Indonesia. The research began with the extraction of botanical pesticides from the leaves of Azadirachta indica, Aglaia odorata, and Ageratum conyzoides using 96% ethanol. The bacterial isolates obtained and characterized in previous studies were tested for their compatibility and cell viability in the combination formula. The field experiment was conducted with 8 treatments, 3 replications, and each replication consisted of 150 rice plants. The randomization pattern followed a randomized block design pattern. The results showed that all bacteria were compatible when combined with 20% botanical pesticides. In addition, cell viability at 3 months of storage decreased, but not significantly. In the organic rice growth variable, all combinations of bacteria with botanical pesticides showed good performance to increase the plant growth. Increased plant growth occurred in the number of tillers, plant height, and the number of productive panicles. Furthermore, yield variables, fresh seed weight per panicle, dry seed weight per panicle, and weight of 1000 seeds also increased significantly after being treated with a combination of plant growth-promoting bacteria and botanical pesticides. The decline in the rice earhead bug population also occurred in all plants treated using botanical pesticides either singly or in combination. The best treatments in this study were BS01 and PD01, which showed consistent results. This study provides information that the combination of plant growth-promoting bacteria and botanical pesticides is compatible, does not cause a high number decrease of bacterial cells at a shelf-life of 3 months, and can stimulate the growth and yield of organic red rice, and can suppress rice earhead bug populations.

In Algeria, wheat occupies a preponderant place regarding its food richness, and its agronomic characteristics. Quantification and characterization of the local genetic material of different species constitute a strategic axis for the improvement of these species. To quantify the diversity that may exist between nine genotypes belonging to the durum variety “valenciae” mainly cultivated in Algeria, biochemical and agronomical parameters were studied. The obtained results revealed highly significant differences for all measured agronomical parameters and a significant positive relationship between grain yield and its compounds. Protein profiles obtained using SDS-PAGE allowed us to split the total seed proteins. The obtained gel has shown different bands with molecular weights ranging from 17 to 122.09 KDa of which ten monomorphic bands, eight polymorphic bands and Three Unique bands in G6 and G9. The total protein polymorphism revealed an intra-varietal variability. This study will help breeders better select genotypes to be used in the Algerian wheat breeding program.

Abstract. Gunawan, Sulistijorini, Chikmawati T, Sobir. 2021. Predicting suitable areas for Baccaurea angulata in Kalimantan, Indonesia Using MaxEnt Modelling. Biodiversitas 22: 2646-2653. Baccaurea angulata Merr. or ‘Belimbing Dayak’ is an underutilized fruit indigenous in Kalimantan. This species potentially used as edible fruit and medicinal plant. Unfortunately,  the forest conversion to oil palm and rubber plantations causes decreasing the habitat of B. angulata.  However, little is known about the occurrences and suitable habitat of B. angulata in Kalimantan. This investigation is might be the first study report on predicting the distribution of B. angulata in Kalimantan using MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy). The results show that four variables namely solar radiation in October, altitude,  precipitation of warmest quarter, and gloslope are significant factors determining B.angulata’s suitable habitat. The location of suitable habitat for  B. angulata is accordant with the real present distribution. The extent of potentially suitable area was significantly larger than the present occurrence of B. angulata in Kalimantan. The highest suitable areas identified in this study covered West Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. They included parts of SB (Sambas), LD (Landak), SG (Sanggau), SK (Sekadau) and BK (Bengkayang) of West Kalimantan Provinces, and TL (Tanah Laut), BN (Banjar) of South Kalimantan Provinces. The MaxEnt model performed better than random method with an Area Under Curve (AUC) value of 0.937 and it was statistically significant. It indicated that MaxEnt model was highly accurate and informative for habitat suitability of B. angulata. The predicted model of suitable areas can be used for management, monitoring, cultivation and future conservation of B. angulata.
