Abstract

This conceptual study aims to develop the SELIS Model (Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Local Insight in Social Studies) as a pedagogical framework that integrates local wisdom, environmental awareness, and entrepreneurial learning within the context of Social Studies education. The study was conducted using a qualitative conceptual approach through systematic library research. Various theoretical perspectives and previous studies were analyzed to construct an integrative model that promotes sustainability-based entrepreneurship education. The proposed model conceptualizes entrepreneurship learning as a cyclical and dynamic process consisting of four stages: contextual exploration, inquiry and design, project implementation, and reflection and evaluation. Each stage is designed to strengthen students’ socio-economic competence, creativity, and ecological awareness. The integration of local cultural values, sustainability principles, and social studies competencies forms the foundation for meaningful and contextually relevant learning experiences. The results of the conceptual synthesis reveal that entrepreneurship education grounded in local wisdom and environmental insight can enhance students’ ethical awareness, responsibility, and innovation capacity. The SELIS Model positions students as active agents of change who are able to translate local potential into environmentally friendly business ideas while maintaining social and ecological balance. This model also emphasizes continuous collaboration between schools, communities, industries, and the environment to ensure that entrepreneurial learning remains relevant to real-world challenges. In conclusion, the SELIS Model offers a comprehensive and sustainable framework for social studies teachers to foster eco-entrepreneurial character, critical thinking, and community-oriented innovation among students, ultimately contributing to the advancement of sustainable education practices.

Abstract

This study presents a posttest-only mixed-methods evaluation of a teacher training program aimed to strengthen teachers’ understanding, attitudes, skills, and commitment to implementing the Seven Habits of Excellent Indonesian Children (7 KAIH), integrated with religious moderation, through the development of interactive media. The training was conducted in two sessions, comprising theory and practice, and involved 42 early childhood education and primary school teachers. This program employed the ASSURE model as its framework, so the training began with an analysis of participant characteristics, followed by goal setting, the selection of strategies, methods, and materials, and proceeded to implementation and evaluation. Data were collected through response questionnaires and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with criterion-referenced interpretation. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Quantitative analysis results indicate that the training produced encouraging learning outcomes, with all aspects attaining means above 4.5, which falls into the excellent category. In addition, qualitative analysis revealed three central themes: teachers’ reinforced role as moral role models in the digital era, enhanced confidence in integrating interactive media with value-based instruction, and the importance of institutional support for sustaining religious moderation practices in schools. Overall, the findings suggest that the training was well received and perceived as relevant for supporting teachers’ facilitative roles in promoting culturally grounded and religiously moderate education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Islamic and local cultural values embedded in the Javanese slametan tradition from the perspective of Social Studies education, as an effort to integrate local wisdom with Islamic values in social education in Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a library research method and thematic analysis of various literature sources related to the slametan tradition. The findings indicate that slametan represents a harmonious form of acculturation between Islamic teachings and Javanese culture. Values such as tauhid (oneness of God), gratitude, prayer, and solidarity derived from Islam intertwine with rukun (social harmony), tepa selira (empathy), and gotong royong (mutual cooperation) as essential elements of Javanese cultural identity. The tradition functions not only as a religious ritual but also as a medium for strengthening social solidarity and spiritual awareness within the community. In the context of Social Studies education, slametan is relevant as a contextual learning resource that integrates moral, social, and religious values rooted in local wisdom. Therefore, integrating Islamic and local cultural values into social education can reinforce the formation of students’ moral, cultural, and social character.

Abstract

Discovery learning has the advantage of allowing students to direct their own learning process by engaging their cognitive abilities and intrinsic motivation. This research aims to enhance students' learning motivation in social studies at SMPN 3 Surabaya. Based on classroom observations, it shows that students' motivation is classified as low. Less than optimal learning motivation impacts student engagement and learning outcomes. The application of the discovery learning model assisted by educational games as an effort to increase students' learning motivation. The method applied in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data. Data collection was conducted using interviews, observations, and questionnaires. The subjects of the study were class VIII B. The results of this study proved that the pre-cycle questionnaire processing showed a low learning motivation score of 60%. In cycle 1, the result was 74%. In cycle 2, there was a significant increase with a learning motivation percentage reaching 84%. It can be concluded that the application of the discovery learning model assisted by educational games can significantly increase students' learning motivation. The implication is that teachers are expected to implement enjoyable learning based on educational media such as Gimkit, which is adaptive to local culture and student abilities, thereby creating a meaningful learning environment and continuously increasing active engagement.

Abstract

Digital technologies have transformed how students develop civic competencies in higher education. This systematic review synthesizes empirical evidence on civic learning outcomes across digital platforms and identifies digital learning modalities that most effectively foster civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Following PRISMA guidelines, 58 peer-reviewed articles (2014–2024) from Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC were analyzed using narrative thematic synthesis and effect size comparison (Cohen's d). Interactive digital modalities, including online discussions, simulations, and collaborative platforms, produced moderate to large effects (d = 0.48–1.12) on civic skills and dispositions, whereas content-delivery approaches showed only small effects (d = 0.18–0.43), primarily on knowledge acquisition. However, most studies relied on self-reported outcomes measured within four weeks, with considerable methodological heterogeneity and frequent use of non-validated instruments, limiting conclusions about long-term behavioral change. Three civic competency domains emerged: cognitive, participatory, and affective. The review highlights that the effectiveness of digital learning depends more on interaction design than on technology type, with student-to-student and student-to-content interactions serving as stronger predictors of civic learning outcomes than specific digital platforms.

Abstract

Teaching materials are vital learning resources that help educators deliver instructional content effectively. A needs analysis conducted at MTs Negeri 6 Jember revealed that Grade VII Social Studies instruction relied heavily on textbooks. Furthermore, limited facilities, such as projectors, restricted classroom activities, leading to low student engagement and boredom, which negatively impacted learning outcomes. To address these issues, this study developed magazine-based teaching materials focusing on socio-cultural topics relevant to students' daily lives and surrounding environments, such as vandalism and juvenile delinquency. This study aimed to evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of these developed materials. Utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model, data were gathered through interviews, questionnaires, and tests. Product trials involved 10 students for the small-group evaluation and 25 students for the large-group evaluation. Validity was analyzed using expert evaluation questionnaires, while practicality was assessed based on teacher and student interview and questionnaire data. Meanwhile, effectiveness was measured using the N-Gain score. The results demonstrated that the magazine-based teaching materials were highly valid, achieving validation scores of 80% from material experts, 85% from language experts, and 80% from media experts. The materials also proved highly practical, receiving positive response rates of 90% from teachers and 86% from students. Moreover, an N-Gain score of 0.67 indicated moderate effectiveness. In conclusion, the developed magazine-based teaching materials are valid, practical, effective, and suitable for use as an alternative learning resource in Grade VII Social Studies.

Abstract

Educational innovation in Indonesia increasingly emphasizes learner-centered approaches to improve academic outcomes. In Social Studies, effective instruction requires active engagement through experiential learning rather than solely theoretical delivery. This study examined the effect of the outdoor learning method on Social Studies learning outcomes at SMP Negeri 1 Mangaran, Situbondo Regency, during the 2024/2025 academic year. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental nonequivalent group design, the study involved 61 eighth-grade students from two intact classes: an experimental group (n = 31) and a control group (n = 30). Data were collected through standardized tests. The outdoor learning intervention consisted of a single 80-minute session, including a 20-minute field observation at the school canteen, preparatory instruction, and classroom discussion. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based on comparable baseline characteristics and the school’s suitability for outdoor learning. Instrument reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s Alpha, and data were analyzed through normality, homogeneity, and Independent Sample t-tests. The results showed a significant positive effect of outdoor learning on student achievement in topics related to the use of the local environment to meet economic needs, t(59) = 3.026, p = 0.004, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.79). The findings indicate that outdoor learning is an effective strategy for improving Social Studies learning outcomes while demonstrating the value of local ecological and economic contexts as authentic learning resources. However, because the study was limited to a single school, one instructional topic, and a short intervention, the findings should be generalized cautiously.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of utilizing Jabung Temple as a Social Studies learning resource on students' learning motivation. The study was motivated by students' low learning motivation due to limited learning resources and a lack of contextual learning experiences. Previous studies have mainly focused on classroom instructional media, while the use of local historical sites as contextual learning resources in Social Studies remains underexplored. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of 58 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Paiton, Probolinggo, divided into an experimental group (n = 29) and a control group (n = 29). The experimental group participated in contextual learning through Jabung Temple, including site observation, exploration of historical values, and guided learning activities, while the control group received conventional classroom instruction. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire and analyzed with the Independent Samples t-test in SPSS version 27. The experimental group achieved a higher mean motivation score (M = 53.86, SD = 3.079) than the control group (M = 51.97, SD = 2.784). The hypothesis test revealed a significant difference between the groups (t(56) = -2.461, p = .017), with a Cohen's d of 0.65, indicating a moderate effect. These findings suggest that integrating Jabung Temple as a local historical learning resource provides authentic learning experiences, enhances student engagement, and effectively improves learning motivation in Social Studies.

Abstract

SMPN 2 Genteng continues to strive to maintain and develop a culture of environmental awareness through policies, activities, and educational innovations. One concrete manifestation of this commitment is the implementation of the Rumah Sampah Program, a school program designed to instill values of environmental awareness directly through integrated waste management activities that are, in practice, linked to classroom learning, particularly in social studies. The purpose of this study is to describe the processes of transformation, transaction, and trans-internalization of environmental care values in Social Studies learning through the Rumah Sampah Program at SMPN 2 Genteng in Banyuwangi. This study is a qualitative study of a descriptive nature. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. This study concludes that 1) During the value transformation stage, knowledge is transferred to students verbally, and the values conveyed are limited to the students’ cognitive domain, thereby beginning to build their cognitive understanding; 2) The value transaction stage is characterized by two-way communication between educators and students.  Teachers also model environmentally conscious behavior, which students then emulate through concrete actions of environmental care by directly participating in waste processing at the waste management site. 3) The trans-internalization stage at SMPN 2 Genteng is proceeding very well, as evidenced by students’ environmentally conscious attitudes not only at school but also as a habit they practice at home.
