Abstract

Social studies is still considered a teaching and learning approach that focuses on integrating social sciences into the educational curriculum. Social studies are developed as an integrated subject (integrative social studies) rather than a disciplinary education. For this reason, this article discusses constructing the scientific structure of social studies as a discipline through a critical perspective. This article is written through a qualitative approach with a literature study method. This article explains the idea of compiling the scientific structure of social studies to answer the anxiety that social studies still does not have a strong enough scientific structure to dare to assert itself as a discipline.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the process of occurrence of symbolic violence on students and the impact of symbolic violence on students at SMAN Flobamorata Kupang (SKO). This study employed a qualitative method. The subjects in this study were teachers and students of SMAN Flobamorata Kupang. Data collection used observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis used data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of the study show that there is symbolic violence in SKO through language because the teachers have symbolic dominance over students. If there are students who are noisy in class, lazy to do assignments, and focus more on sports activities, the teachers easily say lazy and stupid. Meanwhile, there is also symbolic violence between students at SKO because of seniority. Students who have more experience have symbolic dominance because they first enter SKO, so they always want to be respected. In addition, the causes of symbolic violence in SKO are due to differences in the origins of students from cities and countryside. Students from the city of Kupang feel that they have symbolic dominance because they think they know more about life in the city and feel that they are more accomplished in academics and sports than students from the village.

Abstract

Education is crucial for the development of a country. Student academic achievement is one of the key criteria for evaluating the quality of the education system. In the current era of globalization and rapid technological advancement, learning methods have become highly important in enhancing student academic performance. The objective of this research is to evaluate the challenges and future potential of education in Indonesia, as well as the obstacles in implementing blended learning methods in underserved areas towards a more inclusive education solution. This study employs a qualitative methodology, with data collection methods including in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation.Subsequently, data analysis is conducted in four stages: collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The researchers found that blended learning is not effective in improving student academic performance. Out of 31 interviewed students, 26 expressed that, due to a lack of internet access or information devices, blended learning methods could not enhance their overall academic achievement. Additionally, the average grades of students indicate that the average scores of blended learning tend to be lower than those of conventional learning methods. There are also challenges in using this method, particularly in underserved areas, such as: 1) limited access to technology; 2) difficulty in self-learning; 3) challenges in visual communication; 4) difficulties in addressing technical errors; and 5) lack of access to additional learning resources. Solutions to these challenges include the use of alternative methods such as offline lessons or mobile devices, with support and assistance from the government or educational institutions. Offering early training to students and teachers to support online discussion forums where students can ask questions and share technical issues is also suggested. The implications highlight the need for strengthening, training, and providing access to technology, especially in underserved areas, to support even progress in education.

Abstract

Its vast archipelago makes Indonesia a meeting place for various ethnicities, races, traditions, cultures, and religions. Many indigenous communities reside there, each contributing uniquely to Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. This research aims to evaluate the existence of the Friday Night Sandingan tradition in Probolinggo Regency. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings of this research are as follows: 1) The decline in the existence of the sandingan tradition among young people indicates a shift in values and interests of the younger generation away from traditional cultural elements. Traditions upheld by previous generations may be experiencing a decrease in attention because younger individuals are more interested in contemporary entertainment or social activities. Conversely, older generations still consider the sandingan tradition important and relevant due to its historical values, cultural identity, or as a means of preserving ancestral heritage. These differing perceptions between the younger and older generations reflect the dynamics of shifting societal values and culture. Efforts to protect traditions need to be adjusted to the preferences and lifestyles of the new generation. 2) Those who consistently participate in the Friday Night Sandingan tradition serve as evidence of the community's efforts to maintain it. Actively involving and encouraging the younger generation to participate in this tradition demonstrates a conscious effort to preserve the values and distinctive features of the Friday Night Sandingan. This approach reflects an awareness of the importance of preserving local cultural heritage and a desire to sustain the tradition for the next generation. By engaging the younger generation, the community strives to ensure that the sandingan tradition remains relevant and is a vital part of their cultural identity. These efforts create a strong intergenerational bond and assist the community in preserving this tradition.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the moral repressive actions occurring through the implementation of Local Customary Norms and Traditions, particularly in the practice of 'Cuci Kampung' in Bengkulu City. The research seeks to comprehend how customary norms and local traditions lead to moral repressive actions within the local community. Employing a qualitative descriptive research method involving data collection through in-depth interviews with relevant parties, participatory observations, and documentation analysis of narratives depicting the execution of 'Cuci Kampung' and its impact on individuals and communities. Subsequently, the data was cross-checked to ensure accuracy. Data sources included local customary leaders and religious figures in the Pondok Besi neighborhood. Analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman approach, involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings highlight the complexity of the relationship between local traditions, the customary norms of 'cuci kampung,' and moral repressive actions. The study discovered that the implementation of Local Customary Norms and Traditions, such as in the practice of 'Cuci Kampung,' could become a powerful mechanism for social control. However, it often imposes moral pressure on individuals not entirely in line with the existing norms, resulting in internal and external conflicts. This study provides deep insights into how customary norms and local traditions can influence moral repressive actions within a community. The implications of these findings underline the necessity for a balance between preserving local traditions, individual rights, and safeguarding the plurality of moral values within a society.

Abstract

Communication problems in the environment of students who have cultural differences often cause misconceptions and miscommunication so that they are prone to conflict. The purpose of this study is to identify intercultural communication in Papuan students and Sundanese students on the Bogor campus. This research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data collection techniques used are in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. qualitative data analysis using four stages: Data Collection, Data Reduction, Data Display, and Conclusion Drawing/Verification. This study shows that communication that occurs in Papuan students and Sundanese students on the Bogor campus occurs well by prioritizing aspects of mutual tolerance and understanding of each other. A very basic problem for Papuan students is only limited to understanding language and humor that may have different characteristics, as well as understanding the culture of communication in academic terms which still needs a good adaptation process so that learning at the campus can be carried out optimally. As for Sundanese students, hanging out and learning together with Papuan students is an interesting experience to get to know eastern culture better, understand their characteristics, and be able to exchange information effectively about academic and non-academic matters.
