Mosques and madrasas became the main centers of learning, where leading scholars played an important role in shaping educational traditions and encouraging progress in various fields of science. Their contributions not only enriched the Islamic intellectual tradition but also had a far-reaching impact on the exchange of knowledge at the global level, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of education. In addition, the development of curriculum and teaching methods during this period, which emphasized the study of the Qur'an, Hadith, as well as the integration of other sciences such as science, mathematics, and philosophy, created a holistic approach to education. Abstract

This study explores the Santri Gobal Gabul community's contribution to shaping tolerance through a multicultural Islamic education framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were gathered via in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving pesantren caregivers, interfaith leaders, community figures, and local authorities. The findings indicate that the santri Gobal Gabul community is a transformative form of social spirituality expressed through inclusive leadership, moral exemplarity, sustained interfaith dialogue, and cross-cultural interaction. These practices have nurtured santri with tolerant, empathetic, and open-minded dispositions, enabling them to engage constructively across religious and cultural boundaries. Unlike conventional pesantren that emphasize formal structures, this organically developed community demonstrates a contextual model of Islamic education that is both dynamic and responsive to local realities. The study concludes that pesantren-based communities can serve as effective laboratories for tolerance education. The originality of this research lies in formulating a model of multicultural Islamic education rooted in local practice while reflecting universal Islamic values within the framework of national and human solidarity.

Abstract

This study examines the integration between the Javanese cosmology Hamemayu Hayuning Bawono and Islamic ecotheology in the thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. The synthesis of these two perspectives forms a comprehensive and contextual framework of Islamic eco-spirituality in the Indonesian context, which can be applied in daily life. Both Javanese philosophy and Nasr’s thought regard nature as a sacred creation of God, implying that humans bear a moral and spiritual responsibility to preserve it. The principle of Hamemayu Hayuning Bawono, which emphasizes the harmony and beauty of the world, aligns with Nasr’s cosmological concept of tawhid, which highlights the unity of God, humanity, and nature. Both perspectives stem from the awareness that today’s environmental crisis is essentially a spiritual crisis caused by the loss of the sacred perception of nature. This integration not only provides a theoretical contribution to the development of Islamic ecological discourse but also offers practical implications through the strengthening of environmental ethics in education, public policy, and religious social movements such as EcoMasjid and Green Pesantren. Eco-spiritual awareness rooted in spiritual values and local wisdom can reinforce an Indonesian ecological ethic grounded in Islamic teachings. However, since this study is literature-based, further interdisciplinary research involving theology, ecology, and anthropology is needed to deepen and evaluate the implementation of Islamic eco-spirituality concepts within society.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative construction of social spirituality within the Santri Gobal Gabul community, a community-based religious movement affiliated with Pondok Pesantren Al-Muhammad Cepu. Drawing upon Ibn Khaldun’s Sociology of Education, it examines how the hidden curriculum of the Pengajian Malam Ahad (Saturday Night Recitation) functions as a form of non-formal education that transcends conventional pedagogical frameworks. The research focuses on three key dimensions: (1) reconstructing social spirituality through Ibn Khaldun’s concept of ‘ilm al-‘umran al-insani and the development of al-malakah (internalized moral competence); (2) identifying the mechanisms of the hidden curriculum that organically foster tolerance, empathy, and interfaith inclusivity; and (3) formulating a character education model grounded in social spirituality within the pesantren tradition. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological lens, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, then validated through triangulation. The findings reveal that social spirituality is cultivated through ashabiyah khairiyyah (virtue-based social cohesion) emerging naturally within the hidden curriculum. Through moral exemplarity, reflective dialogue, and cross-cultural engagement, Pengajian Malam Ahad serves as a socio-spiritual laboratory (al-‘umran) that transforms individual piety into collective social consciousness.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) currently face dual challenges: maintaining traditional orthodoxy while responding to global technological disruption. This study aims to analyze resilience and adaptation strategies used by pesantren to bridge the values of student (santri) obedience with the characteristics of a critical digital generation. Employing a qualitative approach with a library research method, the data were analyzed descriptively to examine contemporary challenges within the Islamic education ecosystem. The results indicate that pesantren adaptation is manifested in four strategic domains: (1) Curriculum reconstruction through the integration of classical Islamic texts (turats) with scientific-technological literacy; (2) Strengthening digital literacy as a filter against radicalism and hoaxes; (3) Mainstreaming religious moderation (wasathiyyah) as a counter-narrative to extremism; and (4) Fostering economic independence based on sociopreneurship. This article concludes that the sustainability of pesantren depends on its ability to recontextualize values through the principle of al-muhafadhah ‘ala al-qadim al-shalih wa al-akhdzu bi al-jadid al-ashlah (preserving good old traditions while adopting better new ones). Supported by Law No. 18 of 2019, pesantren have the potential to transform into centers of Islamic civilization that are authentic yet globally relevant.
