Abstract

Actually, the interaction between speaker and hearers does not always run well. There are some factors which influence how well the interaction is and one of them is by developing speech act understanding. In short, my thesis statement is that speech acts will establish a smooth and meaningful interaction. To deepen this discussion, it will be followed by explaining the Speech Acts in detailed-perspective, the reasons why we choose Speech Acts, some considerations in developing Speech Acts and the conclusion. The basic function of all the utterances is a command or request but only the imperative structure represents a direct speech act. The interrogative structure is not being used only as a question. Hence, it is an indirect speech act. The declarative structures are also indirect requests. The usefulness of Speech Act analysis is in illustrating the kinds of things we can do with words and identifying some of the conventional utterance form we use to perform specific actions. Through Speech Acts, we can see how speakers can mean considerably more than their words say. However, we do need to look at more extended interaction to understand how those actions are carried out and interpreted within speech events.

Abstract

Conversation is a kind of oral discourse. In a formal structure, it is governed by a set of implicit conventions including rules for taking turns, for maintaining and changing topics. Its settings shape conversational processes. Conversation can be analyzed linguistically and socially. There are several aspects we could use to analyze a conversation such as taking turns, sequence, adjacency pairs, and the like. Turn taking, firstly, refers to the cooperation in conversation managed by all participants. Conversation analysts claim that as speakers are mutually constructing and negotiating their conversation in time, certain sequences, which are stretches of utterances or turns, emerge. And the next is adjacency pairs. It refers to relation between acts, and that conversation contains frequently occurring patterns, in pairs of utterances known as adjacency pairs. Thus in a communication we need better constructing sentences between the speakers and the listeners, in this case the Adjacency Pairs.

Abstract

This study was conducted to answer a question: how the interpersonal meaning of the novel is realized. The analysis of the text was represented by the analysis of interpersonal meaning of the novel by using appraisal system offered by Martin and Rose (2003) more particularly the identification of three kinds of attitude: affect, judgement, and appreciation. The findings on the identification of three kinds of attitudes –affect, judgement, and appreciation- showed that there were more negative feelings expressed than the positive ones, more negative characters judged than the positive ones, and more negative things appreciated than the positive ones. This study has no direct contribution in language education but there was still an indirect pedagogical implication, as an invitation for English teachers to analyse various kinds of texts.

Abstract

This article converses an interaction in cooperative learning to improve students’ cognitive aspect. Cooperative learning uses small groups that consist of students who are pent up to work together and improve their studying each other. Therefore, it cannot be separated from the interaction. Jean Piaget, clarifies that when students work together, the conflict of socio – cognitive will appear and produce a cognitive disequilibrium. The cognitive disequilibrium will be able to improve students’ ability to think logically and speak. In addition, the teacher should organize the five essential components of cooperative learning explicitly to make it run well, such as positive independence, Face-to-Face Promotive Interaction, individual accountability, interpersonal and small group skills, and group process. Finally, the students can feel enjoyable learning in a group which influences their cognitive aspect. They also celebrate their success together.

Abstract

The Ministry of Education and Culture surprisingly wanted all primary schools to remove English, which has been taught for nearly 14 years in primary schools. It is the responsibility of governments, experts, and the media to educate stakeholders, to ensure that Indonesian children receive the best possible education. TEFLIN (the Association of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia) recommends that English (a) is a local component for schools that have qualified human resources and adequate capacity, (b) is an extra-curricular for schools which have limited human resources and capacity, and (c) should not be taught in elementary school that does not have the human resources and capacity at all. The best choice of the three options above is to enforce English in elementary school as a local content so that certified English teachers in elementary school will not lose their jobs and high public interest toward English language will be accommodated.

Abstract

A teacher plays an important role in classroom activities. It is his/her duty to decide the kinds of learning materials, activities, as well as learning strategies for the students. He/she should have skills to conduct his/her students so they can learn English enthusiastically. An English teacher should be able to create an enjoyable teaching and learning process. Obviously, the most important factor in effective teaching and learning situation is not who the teacher is, but how the teacher acts in the classroom, and how he/she involves his/her students during the process. Therefore, the teacher should give students opportunities to express their opinions, ideas, or feelings during the classroom process.

Abstract

The major problem of teaching English faced by the teachers in class seems that learners are not interested in studying. There are some factors why it happened. One of them is the limitation of instructional media in English teaching-learning process. There are many kinds of instructional media that the teachers can use in teaching process from the simplest ones to the complex or modern ones as cited in Depdiknas (2005). They are: visual, audio, audio-visual, tactile, and virtual. According to Sukartiwi (1996), the advantages of using media in teaching-learning process are: to increase the learners’ motivation, to avoid the learners bored, to make the learners easy to understand the material, and to make the teaching learning process more systematic. The role of media is very important in English teaching-learning process to achieve the instructional goal. Among the implicit goals that media can be helped by teachers to achieve are as follows: attracting attention, developing interest, adjusting the learning climate, and promoting acceptance (of an idea).

Abstract

The main purpose of English learning for junior high school students is to prepare them in mastering communicative competence. The thing that teacher can do is preparing situations in which the students possible to learn. Creating situations to trigger the students to learn in amusing activities is the teacher’s duty rather than focusing the students to do tasks without preparing good situations. Group work is considered an essential feature of communicative language teaching. It increases language practice opportunities, improves the students talk, helps to individualize instruction, promotes a positive affective climate, and motivates the students to learn. The students working in small groups produce a greater quantity of language and also better quality of language than the students in teacher-fronted lockstep classroom setting. The writer creates some techniques to trigger students in amusing classroom activities as well as creating short cut strategies to master the basic of English grammar which will facilitate them on learning further.
