Abstract

This study is to analyze the English materials design of Hospitality Industry College of Purwokerto (HICP) from the aspects of need analysis and principles of ESP’s contribution to the creation of materials design of HICP. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and interview, documentation, observation and questionnaire delivered to the students, the ESP teacher, and the stakeholder of HICP to collect the data. To analyze the data, three main steps of data analysis, which are data reduction, display and conclusion, are used. The result shows that the English materials design of HICP does not meet all of the need analysis result and the principles of ESP. The materials design of HICP only covers the students’ learning interest, the goal, the English usage and the setting of frequency, as well as the nature of the learning task and a correct language use.

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the implementation of classroom language used by English teachers in SMA Islam Ta’allumul Huda Bumiayu, which is based on: classroom chronological order and language functions. In this research, the writers use descriptive qualitative method. The techniques of data collection in this study are observation, interview, and documentation. The writers use data reduction, data display and data conclusion to analyse the data. The findings show that the implementation of classroom language used by the English teacher runs well. Both English teachers reveal that the students of language and science are more active in the use of classroom language than the students of social. The students of language and science know the classroom language mentioned by two English teachers directly, while the students of social need repetition so they know classroom language said by the English teachers. Furthermore, the English teachers should be more active in giving stimulus to the students of social, so they know what the teachers say and become active in every classroom activity.

Abstract

This study aims at: examining the difference of the third semester students' reading ability of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University of Tegal between the students taught with web-based learning media and those with conventional learning. This research employs a quantitative approach with a true-experimental method conducted by using a pre-test – post-test control group design. The Population is all of the third semester students of English Education Study Program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University of Tegal. The samples consist of 32 students classified into the experiment group and the other 29 students classified into the control group. The research instruments are questionnaire and test, while Mann Withney test is conducted for data analysis. Based on the results of Mann Withney test, it is obtained that p (0.000) <α (0.05) which means that the application of web-based learning media effectively improves the students' reading ability.

Abstract

This article attempts to describe the application of Authentic Materials (AMs) in teaching listening. Those materials contain the materials presented on news (radio), television, movies, songs and internet. The choice of using AMs is due to the fact that it has a lot advantages for lecturers and students. In this study, AMs are used to teach listening for English department students of Pancasakti University of Tegal. The result shows that through AMs, the lecturers can provide large materials to be learnt by students and they can support them to activate their critical thinking in learning listening. The students feels enjoy, comfortable and interested on the materials given. The lecturer’s creativity, furthermore, is needed to motivate the students to learn English as the foreign language as well as to increase their listening achievement.

Abstract

Language is a means of communication; it is mostly influenced by gender. For a long time, language and gender studies turn to be an endless issue in both sociolinguistics and pragmatics areas. Many studies focus on linguistic levels such as phonology, grammar, pragmatics and morph syntax. However, few of them are conducted in specific contexts. Based on the social condition above, this research examines the specific context about language and gender in “The Importance of being Earnest” based on conversational analysis as its theoretical framework. It employs each act from all four scenes as data source and adopts quantitative and qualitative analysis, comparison and contrast method. The study mainly concentrates on differences in the amount of talk, the amount of turns and also distribution of them. “The Importance of being Earnest” shows how people in the old day (1895) have views about education, politeness and gender. This drama is suitable to find out the different social interaction between men and women since the ways they use the language is different. By conducting this research, it leads to capture these findings: in terms of the amount of talk, women use more words to compose more sentences. In other words, they are more talkative than men. Meanwhile, in the aspect of the amount of turns, men are inclined to take the turn floor for a longer time.
