Abstract

This study is about a syntactic analysis on sentences in the song lyrics of one direction album’s Made in the A.M. To collect the data, the writers use descriptive qualitative and Simak Bebas Libas Cakap (SLBC) as the method. The writers use Carnie theory (2000) to identify simple declarative sentences and set of rules portrayed in the form of tree diagram. From the result of syntactic analysis on script of song lyrics of one direction album’s “Made in the A.M”, it can be concluded that there are 82 simple declarative sentences. There are twenty four sample of them in which the top two structures are similar. The most frequent sentence structure which occurs in the song lyrics of one direction album’s Made in the A.M. is the pattern of S ¾> NP + VP in which VP ¾> V + NP appear in 19 times.

Abstract

This essay is to figure out the hegemonic strategy in Ajidarma’s short story entitled Ibu yang Anaknya Diculik Itu. The story was written in 2008 through online mass media, Kompas. It is believed that the story is loaded with critical perspectives toward current social and political issue. The critics represent the way the author sees the issue and efforts to create self-awareness and self-enrichment. Using Gramsci’s hegemonic theory, the story is analysed. The essay shows that Ajidarma’s story functions as hegemonic sites. The ideology of humanity is simultaneously proposed to the readers through the character of Mother. Ajidarma disagrees the inequity caused by political power and he believes that every human being has right to get immunity from the political violence.

Abstract

This study is to find out wheather using bamboo dancing method is effective or not to improve the students’ speaking skill in recount text. The population of this study is the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sirampog in the academic year 2015/2016. The number of the subject is 65 students. The samples of the study are class X IPS 2 as experimental class which consists of 32 students and class X IPS 1 as control class which consists of 33 students. The design of this study uses true experimental study. The writers collect the data by using tests, questionnaires, documentations, recording and transcription. The mean of experimental class is higher than control class (71.75 > 166.54). Then the result of the mean of post-test is higher than pre-test in experimental class (71.75 > 61.62). It can be concluded that bamboo dancing method is effective in teaching spoken recount text on the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sirampog in the academic year 2015/2016.

Abstract

This study is to find out wheather using Top Down strategy is effective for teaching listening or not. The design of this study is an experimental study. The population of this study is the eighth grade students of SMP Ma’arif NU I Bumiayu, Brebes regency in the academic year 2014/2015. The number of the subjects is 60 students. The samples of the study are class VIIIA as experimental class which consists of 32 students and class VIII B as control class which consists of 28 students. The writer uses tests (pre and post-test) in collecting the data. The data is analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) 16 program. It shows that in Independent Samples Test between control and experimental class score sig is 0.948 (more than 0.05). It means that both of classes have same variant. It can be seen from comparing the means both of the classes; it finds that the mean of experimental class 68.5 is higher than control class 67.5. Then the result of the mean of post-test of experimental class 76.4 is higher than pre-test 71.3. For that reason, it can be concluded that Top Down strategy is effective for teaching listening on the eighth grade students of SMP Ma’arif NU I Bumiayu in the academic year 2014/2015.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the method used by GLC Junior instructor in teaching English at Al Ishlah kindergarten, Laren, Brebes. The subject of this study is class B consisting of 22 students. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. Triangulation of technique uses observation, interview, and documentation. In teaching English GLC junior course instructor uses some methods focusing on improving vocabularies, listening, and speaking skill at the students in class B Al-Ishlah Kindergarten, Laren, Brebes, namely lecturing method, demonstration method, translating method, and TPR method. The methods are class handled by instructor fully. In demonstration method, instructor uses picture to make materials clearer. In TPR method, instructor uses some songs, speech and action. In translating method, instructor uses bilingual to make material clearer. In teaching learning English the instructor and the students have difficulties, but the instructor has solutions. It is very enjoyable for the students in studying English with the instructor.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to improve students’ speaking competence in English teaching and learning process through Inside-Outside circle technique. The research is carried out at SMK MA’ARIF NU 01 Paguyangan in Second Semester in Academic Year 2015/2016. The research uses Classroom Action Research. The writers take eleventh grade students which consists of 30 female students as the subject of the research. This action research is conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. In collecting the data, the writers use observation, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of collecting the data, there are some conclusions that can be drawn. Inside-Outside circle technique is able to improve students’ speaking competence in English class. It can be seen from the result of test and observation. Students’ speaking competence improved. The average of pre-test is 43.06%, post-test 1 is 60.13%, and post-test 2 are 76.83%. The score improvement in post-test 1 is 26.07% toward pre-test. The score improvement in post-test 2 is 7.7% toward post-test 1. The result of post-test 2 shows that from 30 students, there are 24 students (80%) and the success indicator ≥75 from minimum score (KKM). The observation result also shows the improvement, the total average of students’ activities in Cycle 1 is 24.69%, and the total average of students’ activities in Cycle 2 is 82.52%. Thus, the improvement of students’ an activity is 57.83%. Thus, the improvement of students’ activities is 57.83%. The questionnaire result shows 79.31% of the students agreed. Overall, the research shows that the teaching speaking through Inside-Outside circle technique can improve students’ speaking competence in English teaching learning process.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyse the adjustment and academic achievement of international students at Jenderal Soedirman University. The writers propose two research questions: How do international students adjust with new environment at Jenderal Soedirman University? And how does better adjustment relate to academic achievement of international students at Jenderal Soedirman University? Qualitative approach is used in this research with interview, observation, and documentation as the data collection techniques. The sources of the data are international students of Jenderal Soedirman University, the staffs of IRO in Jenderal Soedirman University, the lecturers of the economic and business faculty in Jenderal Soedirman University, and the staffs of the international program in economic and business faculty of Jenderal Soedirman University. The findings of the data indicate that the adjustment of the international students in this case follows the U-Curve theory and the better adjustment is related to academic achievement of the international students through the completion of the courses with good GPA. There are many successful factors that contribute to the adjustment and academic achievement of the international students such as well-organized support services, friendship with co-nationals, well-organized international program, and kindness of the society.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyse the rank scale realized in a Disney song lyric. The source of data is “I See the Light” from Alan Menken, in which the writers analyse four levels: word level, phrase level, clause level, and sentence level. It can be concluded that the result of rank scale analysis has all of the types of sentences. They are 11 simple sentences, 2 compound sentences, 7 complex sentences, and 1 compound and complex sentence. The structures of word level, phrase level, clause level, and sentence level have 2 similar structures, which is shown through the second sentence and the sixteenth sentence. The formation of similar structure in word level can be portrayed as: Det + Det + N + N + Aux + V + Prep + Det + N. The formation of similar structure in phrase level can be described as: NP + NP + NP + VP [Aux + V + PP + NP]. The formation of similar structure in clause level can be described as: MC ® NP + NP + NP + VP [Aux + V + PP + NP]. The formation of similar structure in sentence level can be portrayed as: S/MC ® NP + NP + NP + VP [Aux + V + PP + NP].
