Abstract

Teaching English for disability or special needs students is a challenge requires specific method or strategy and needs participation of all parties within the school. Deafness is one kind of physical disability. Teaching English to deaf student is so hard. The research is aimed at describing teacher’s strategy in teaching English for deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi. Qualitative approach is used in this research. Techniques of data collection used are observation, interview, and documentation (image). To analyse the data obtained, the writers use data collection technique, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this study shows that the teacher emphasizes on conducting effective lesson by repeating the material and checking students’ understanding periodically, individualizing instructional practices in measure each student’s ability and students’ sitting position as the classroom accommodation as her strategy for teaching deaf students. She uses Total Physical Response, Grammar Translation Method as the English language development strategies in teaching English for deaf students combined with oral speech and sign language used, SIBI. It can be concluded that the goal of teaching English by using those strategies can be achieved. Teaching English to deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi focuses on reading and writing skills.

Abstract

The writers choose to research the language style because everyone has their own language style whether in spoken or written context. This is where the writers find and want to know the problem regarding how the language styles are used in written text, especially in story book. The aim of this study is to describe language style in “The Big Read” story book combined by team of Global Campaign for Education at April 2009. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data are taken from “The Big Read” story book. Based on the result of the study, the study finds out that language style used in “The Big Read” story book. The research finds that there are four types of language style in “The Big Read” story book: (1) formal style, (2) consultative style, (3) casual style, (4) intimate style. The mostly type of language style that occurs in “The Big Read” story book is casual style. The finding of this study shows the calculating of language style, which are: 51 casual styles, 17 intimate styles, 10 formal styles, and 3 consultative styles. From the whole of the analysis and the data, the result of this study is covered and answers the research question.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the speaking mastery of Pare graduates in Bumiayu. The source of data is Pare graduating students in Bumiayu. There are fifteen respondents from speaking course in Pare English village. The writers analyze their speaking skill that covers fluency, comprehensibility, and accuracy which consist of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The writers use speaking theory from Heaton (1988). The writers apply descriptive qualitative design as the method. The writers use four steps to analyze the data. They are identifying, analyzing the accuracy, fluency and comprehensibility, describing the data by the table, and concluding the findings. The result of speaking mastery of Pare graduates in Bumiayu is there is no respondent classified as excellent. Meanwhile twenty seven percent respondents are classified as good, then thirty three percent respondents are classified as average, and forty percent respondents are classified as poor, while there is no respondent is classified as very poor. The writers conclude that how long the respondents have studied in Pare does not affect the students’ speaking mastery. There are some of them who have poor mastery even though they have been more than three months studying in Pare, and there are also those who have good mastery even though they have only studied for one month in Pare.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze clause complexes and clause type realized on Bill Gates’ interview script entitled “How We must Respond to The Coronavirus Pandemic‟ in TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design). The source of data is Bill Gates’s interview script. The writer uses Gerot’s and Wignell’s theory. The analysis belongs to descriptive qualitative method, in which the writer uses six steps to analyze the data. First, the writer watches Bill Gates’ interview on Youtube. Second, the writer copies the script. Third, the writer reads the script. Next, the writer identifies the components of clause complexes and clause type. Then, the writer describes the analysis in each identification. Last, the writer draws the conclusion. Finally, based on the result of the analysis clause complexes and clause type of Bill Gates’ interview script, it can be concluded there are 452 clauses divided into 2 types of clause complexes. There are 422 clauses which belong to expansion. There is also elaboration with each relationship 85 clauses, extension with each relationship 244 clauses, and enhancement 93 clauses. In projection, there is 10 verbal clauses and 20 mental clauses. Besides, the total clause types are 708 clauses. Minor is 33 clauses. In major, there are 251 independent clauses and 249 dependent clauses. The independent clause consists of 33 non-elliptical clauses and 35 elliptical clauses. The number of dependent clauses is 249. Embedded clauses are 61 and non-embedded clauses are 46.

Abstract

The research explores the teacher’s implementation of online English teaching and learning during the Covid 19 pandemic at SDN 3 Bungur Central Jakarta. The data are collected through interview with the English teacher at SDN 03 Central Jakarta and documentation device learning of English teaching as supporting data. There are several media learning used in online English teaching i.e WhatsApp group, Google Drive, Google Classroom, Google Meet and Google Form. The use of those learning media is based on predetermined guidelines. In learning English teacher has the principle that students feel comfortable in learning. Based on the results of the analysis, learning English is going well. This is assessed from the activeness of students in learning and the interaction between the English teacher and students which is interactive and warm.

Abstract

This study aims to identify various grammatical errors based on Linguistic Category Taxonomy and Surface Strategy Taxonomy, for their tendency of occurrence in the texts and to find out various kinds of student problems when writing text in English. This study is qualitative-quantitative research with an instrument in descriptive text written test essays and questionnaires from the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Purwokerto. Then, the texts are analyzed based on Dulay’s theory. From the results in text analysis, the writers find 4 types of grammatical errors by Dulay’s theory. The 4 types of errors are Omission (54.9%), Misordering (23.75%), Misformation (15.93%), and Addition (6.07%), with the total errors is 182 errors. The problems faced by students are low grammar mastery, low vocabulary mastery, low in composing sentences, and sentence pattern still influenced by mother tongue. As a result, the students still write text using the original or Indonesian sentence structure.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the online English teaching and learning process during Covid-19 Pandemic at SMP Ma’arif NU 1 Pekuncen Academic Year 2021/2022. This is a descriptive qualitative research in which the data are taken by observation, interview, and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. This study finds out that Online English Teaching and Learning Process during Covid-19 Pandemic at SMP Ma’arif NU 1 Pekuncen Academic Year 2021/2022 have several changes. The changes are in the learning system, which initially ran conventionally (face to face) to online learning. The English teacher uses Asynchronous Learning and Task-Based Learning, it purposes to allows the students to learn on their own schedule, within a certain timeframe.
