Abstract

Without vocabulary, it is difficult for the students to express their opinions, ideas, and feelings. Memrise online application is a software application that offers the users to memorize vocabulary easily. The tenth grade BDP (Bisnis Daring dan Pemasaran) students of SMK Al-Furqon Bantarkawung are still lack of vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to find out whether Memrise online application is effective or not on vocabulary mastery for them. This is an experimental research. The data of the research are collected from tests, questionnaire, and documentation. T-test is used to test the hypothesis. The result finds that tvalue is 0.063 and significant of level 0.05, the score of ttable is 1.67252. The calculation shows that tvalue is lowest than ttable. Thus, H0 is accepted and Ha is rejected. 100% students are present studying Memrise on vocabulary mastery for them, but they have a problem when using it, such as: connecting internet and smartphone. The writers conclude that Memrise Online application is not effective on vocabulary mastery for the tenth grade BDP students of SMK Al-Furqon Bantarkawung.

Abstract

The aims of this study are (1) to describe method needs in the form of TOEFL teaching materials according to perception of University students (2) to design draft of teaching materials in the form of listening method (MELIS) (3) to test the effectiveness of the method in the form of teaching materials to improve TOEFL listening ability of non-English language’s study program students. Method to be conducted in this research is to use a research development method (R&D). Abstract

Slang language is an informal language that tends to be discovered and used by Americans movies. However in fact, it is not just the Americans people use the slang language but also the British. They use slang in movies. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to describe the formation of slang language found in British movie that is Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone written by J.K. Rowling. To answer the question the writers use George Yule theory about slang word formation. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research method. The research finds that there are 141 slang word formation in the script; 71 words for blending, 38 words for derivation, 10 words for clipping, 8 words for borrowing, 6 words for compounding, 3 words for coinage, 2 words for conversion, 2 words for multiple processes and the last 1 word for acronym. The result shows that blending is the most dominant word formation of slang language in Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone. It is a combination of two words or more into one word.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the students’ error of variable stress in Tongue Twister. The source of data is the 5th grade students of Pondok Pesantren Modern Darunnajat in the academic year 2018/2019. In this article, the writer analyzes the students’ error in pronouncing variable stress in Tongue Twister. The writer uses Metrical Phonology theory from McMahon in 2002. The writer uses descriptive qualitative research. The writer uses documentation technique to collect the data; the writer uses voice recorder to analyse students’ error variable stress of Tongue Twister. The writer uses Audacity software to see the sounds frequency. Then, the writer uses Metrical Phonology to determine which syllable in each word is S (stronger) or W (weaker), and Oxford dictionary to analyze the students’ error. It can be concluded that the students have made the total number of error as many as five hundred and three (503) students’ error from 5th F grade students, the total amount students is seventeen (17) and the total amount of words in Tongue Twister is fifty eight (58) from three levels.

Abstract

English language ability is one of the skills that must be possessed by college students, including Management’s students. Having good English skills will open broad opportunities for increasing the competency and expertise of Management’s students. One form of recognition of good English skills is to have a high TOEFL score. However, getting a high TOEFL score is still a challenge for Management’s students. Facts in the field show that many Managements’ students find it difficult to achieve high scores on the TOEFL test. The most common form of difficulty is the problem in answering questions related to the structure and written expression section in the Paper-Based TOEFL test. The purpose of this research is to investigate management’s students’ difficulties in the structure and written expressions section tested in the Paper-Based TOEFL. The population of this study is 80 Management’s students of Universitas Muhadi Setiabudi, and the sample is selected by using cluster random sampling. Data of the research are collected through tests and interviews. The result of the research finds that that there are 8 items considered as the most difficult elements met by Management’s students in the TOEFL test. These items are word order, parallel structure, singular and plural nouns, missing and extra words, articles, comparative and superlative, word choice, and word form. In addition, the findings also show that several factors influence Management’s students' difficulties in the structure and written expression section. The factors are unfamiliarity with the TOEFL test, lack of practice, and lack of grammatical competence.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse how Tjokroaminoto educates and regenerates leadership to the young students who live in his boarding home. The young students later become the founding father of Indonesia. The writer uses Kouzes and Posner’s theory of leadership called as Great Leadership Process. The writer applies descriptive qualitative design as the method. The result of analysis is Tjokroaminoto applies Five Practice of Great Leadership such as giving a role model, inspiring a shared vision, giving challenge to proceed, allowing others to act, and encouraging. There are also Ten Commitments of Leadership found in i.e. discovering conscience by clarifying personal values, giving role model by aligning actions with shared values, seeing the future by imagining exciting opportunities and sublime, getting people into a shared vision with the aspirations together, searching for opportunities by searching for innovative ways to change, grow, and become better. Further, experimenting and taking risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from mistakes, fertilizing collaboration by promoting shared goals and building trust, strengthening others by sharing power and discretion, recognizing contributions by showing appreciation for individual achievement, and last but not least, celebrating the values ​​and victories by creating the spirit of community.

Abstract

Register is one of the varieties of language which has specific lexical and grammatical choices. The language of football commentary, politic, and economic are considered as examples of register language. In this study, the writers analyze the register used in commentary text on sixteenth round of FIFA World Cup 2018 France Vs Argentina football match. There are three problems of the study which are proposed: (1) What register is used in commentary text on sixteenth round of FIFA World Cup 2018 France Vs Argentina football match?, (2) What linguistics features of register are used in commentary text on sixteenth round of FIFA World Cup 2018 France Vs Argentina football match?, and (3) What are the meaning of register used in text commentary text on sixteenth round of FIFA World Cup 2018 France Vs Argentina football match? This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. The data are only taken from text commentaries uploaded on GOAL sport website. This study reveals that the registers used in live text commentary commonly have different meaning when it relates to other field, profession and situation. Some registers are unfamiliar words which do not exist in other field outside the football.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the Javanese students’ pronunciation of English consonant, to find out the influence of Javanese accent toward English consonant pronunciation, and to describe the difficulties faced and the solutions on Javanese students’ English consonant pronunciation. The writers use descriptive qualitative method. The writers start from test by collecting the data using pronunciation accent test material to find out how the Javanese students pronounce English consonant and do it through a record player. Next, the writers conduct interview to the Javanese students and the lecturer of Pronunciation course. Finally, based on the result of pronunciation test and interview, it can be concluded that the Javanese accent used by the Javanese students of English education study program at Universitas Peradaban is Banyumas accent. There are several problems on Javanese students’ English pronunciation, namely: the sound /p/ which is substituted with the sound /f/, the sound /ʒ/ which is substituted with the sound /ʃ/, the sound /ɵ/ which is substituted with the sound /t/, and there are five consonants which are influenced by Javanese accent, namely: consonant /b/, /d/, /g/, /dʒ/, and /ð/. In consonant /b/, there are 10% Javanese students who are influenced by their Javanese accent. It should be pronounced bilabial plosive, but Javanese students pronounce bilabial non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 60% in consonant /d/, it should be pronounced voiced alveolar plosive consonant, but it is pronounced apico-dental non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 90% in consonant /g/, it should be pronounced voiced velar plosive, but Javanese students pronounce dorso-velar non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 55% in consonant /dʒ/, it should be pronounced voiced palate-alveolar affricative, but it is pronounced medio-palatal non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. The last 10% in consonant /ð/, it should be pronounce voiced dental fricative, but Javanese students pronounce apico-dental non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. The difficulty faced on the students’ English consonant pronunciation is that their English pronunciation is still influenced by Javanese accent. To overcome their difficulty, they practice to pronounce English consonant every day, listen to the English song and then imitate it, watch English movies, and read some English books and then try to pronounce the words that they read.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to improve the students’ pronunciation through English with Lucy YouTube Video. The subject of the research is 32 students at the eleventh grade of social science of MA Ma’arif NU 1 Cilongok academic year 2019/2020. The writers use classroom action research based on Kemmis and Mc. Taggart concept as research design. The writers conduct the research in two cycles consists of planning, action, observation and reflection in each cycle. The writers use oral test, observation, questionnaire and documentation as technique of data collection. The students’ pronunciation is improved through the implementation of English with Lucy YouTube Video. The result of the students mean score in pre- test is 69 and the result of students mean score in post-test is 75. It means that the classroom action research is success. The result of students’ mean score of post-test shows the improvement, in which it reaches out the score 70 as the KKM of English lesson. The result of questionnaire shows that 86% students enjoy the learning process using English with Lucy YouTube Video. The students become more active and confidence during the learning process. According to the teachers, English with Lucy YouTube Video can be used as media in teaching English pronunciation.
