Abstract

This study is descriptive qualitative about syllable structure analysis on Emma Watson’s speech. To collect the data, the writers use Simak Bebas Libat Cakap method. The writers use McMahon theory (2002) to analyse the syllable structure, make tree diagram, and then define the type of syllable structure according to its word use in Emma Watson’s speech. From the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 192 words with 47 types of syllable structure. The highest numbers of the types of syllable structure in each number of syllables are: one syllable CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) with 42 numbers, two syllables CV. CVC with 19 numbers, three syllables CV. CV. CVC with 3 numbers, four syllables CV. CV. CV. CVC with 3 numbers, and five syllables VC. V. CCV. CV. CV with 1 number.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse English noun phrase formation on brochures of five hotels in Yogyakarta. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which data are taken from the hotels at Malioboro Street, Yogyakarta. They are Amaris Hotels, Grand Puri Saron Hotels, Grand Puri Saron boutique Hotels, Mataram 2 Hotels, and Pyrenees Hotels. The techniques of data analysis are dividing all the phrase in brochures into its phrase types, rewriting each phrase using tree diagram, describing the formation of noun phrase from the hotels’ brochures, and drawing conclusion. The study finds that there are 221 noun phrases found in brochures of five hotels in Yogyakarta. Based on the result, there are 16 rule types of noun phrases found. Those rules of English noun phrase consist of: 1 NP → Adj + N + N + N, 2 NP → Det + Adj + Adj + N, NP → Adj + N, NP → N + N, NP → Det + N, NP → Adj + Adj + N, NP → N+ N + N, NP → N + Prep + N, NP → Adj+ N + N, NP → Adj + N + Prep + N, NP → V + N, NP → Adj + N + Prep +N, NP → Adv + Adj + N, NP → Det + N +Prep + Det + N, NP → N + Prep + V, NP → N + Adj. The domination of the rule type of English noun phrases formation on hotel brochures is NP → N + N.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze male and female language used in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle” movie. This descriptive qualitative method research is supported by diagrams showing the data frequency of appearance on each category. The data is taken from utterances by characters in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle”. The source of data collection in this study is the script of the movie. Using Wardhaugh theory, the result shows that there are five types of male language in “Jumanji Welcome to the jungle” movie. They are adverbs (16) pronouns “you” (26), expletives and swear statement (29), imperative sentences (31) and modulation (104). Nine types of female language in “Jumanji Welcome to the jungle” movie are adverbs (2), color words (3), correctness of grammar (4), tag questions (4), pronouns”we” (12), diminutives (20), adjectives (27), expletives and swear statement (28), and modulation (30). The most frequent types of language used by male and female characters in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle” movie is modulation. The writers found 104 modulation of male language and 30 modulation in female language. The function of modulation for male in communicating is to ask something directly, while for female is to ask something politely.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve the students’ writing skill in descriptive text through PWIM. The subject of this research is the students of SMP An-Nuriyyah Bumiayu in the academic year 2019/2020 at class VII D. There are 29 students consisting of 17 males and 12 females. The writers apply classroom action research through online learning because of Covid-19 pandemic, based on Kemmiss’ and Mc. Taggart’s concept: planning, action, observation, reflection and revised plan. There are four techniques in collecting the data, namely observation, test, questionnaire, and documentation. The research is conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consists of two meetings (pre-test) and for the second cycle consists two meetings (post-test). To find out the problem, the writers conduct pre-observation and pre-test. The result shows that the students’ English writing test can be improved in each test. The increase obtained from pre-cycle to cycle 1 is 6,7%, and the increase from cycle 1 to cycle 2 is 22,2%. In pre-cycle to cycle 1 the mean score of the students in pre-test is 63 and post-test is 77. It reaches out the point 72 as the minimum criteria of mastery learning of English lesson. Based on the result, the students’ writing skill can be improved through PWIM in online teaching learning process.

Abstract

Curriculum is a foundation for carrying out teaching and learning activities in schools. It takes role in an education system. Indeed, the teacher’s involvement has pivotal rules to the curriculum development that their understanding to curriculum becomes necessary. This study aims to review the teachers’ understanding of the English Curriculum on Curriculum 2013 as the Indonesian current curriculum issue. The participants of this study are two English teachers of Vocational High School and Junior High School. The data are assembled through semi-structure interview. The result has implied that the teachers’ understanding to the English Curriculum 2013 is good enough and they have been implementing it consistently to the regulation although they have to deal with some constraint. Each of the teachers proposes different idea about Curriculum 2013 but still a positive perception.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe English teaching methods used by Student English Forum (SEF) of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which data are taken from interview, observation and documentation. Based on the result of the study, the study finds out that English teaching methods used by Student English Forum (SEF) is effective teaching method. The SEF has four classes i.e. SGSC, TOEFL class, Private class, Story Telling and Speech class. The result of the research found that there are ten methods applied such as Jigsaw, Timeline, Debate, Text-Book, Discussion, Think-Pair-Share, Bilingual method, Grammar-Translation Method, Flash card, and Drilling method. Students can develop their idea and their skill in English. The Jigsaw, Timeline, and Debate method is applied to teach the SGSC class. The Text-book and Discussion method is applied to teach TOEFL class. The Think-Pair-Share, Bilingual method, Grammar-Translation Method, and Flash card are applied to teach Private class, and Drilling method is to teach Story Telling class. The methods applied in SEF can create good progress for Student Activity Unit because they can improve students’ competence and English language skills.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to identify the types of idiom found in the album “Purpose – Justin Bieber” and to analyse the strategies used in idiom translation. The source of data is the album of “Purpose – Justin Bieber”. There are eighteen song lyrics in the album and their Indonesian translation. In this study, the writers identify the types of idiom by using Palmer’s theory (1976) and analyse the strategies used in idiom translation by using Baker’s theory (1992). The writers use descriptive qualitative design and Simak Bebas Libat Cakap as the technique of data collection. The result of data analysis in idiom translation strategies found in 9 songs lyric album. From the identification of idiom, the writers found 23 idioms in the song lyric album consisted of three types, they were phrasal verb, partial idiom, and prepositional verb. The result of data analysis shows that there are three types of idiom found namely phrasal verb, partial idiom, and prepositional idiom. Moreover, there are three strategies found in idiom translation, which are similar meaning and form, similar meaning and dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase.

Abstract

Gamification is one of the learning innovations which implement the element of games within the learning process to attract students’ attention. This paper discusses the octalysis gamification framework applied in language learning and the effect of it towards students’ engagement. The subject of this study was 25 primary students who considered have low English ability known by teacher’s handed down in the beginning of the semester and classroom observation in one of private schools in Jakarta. The data used was from lesson plans, teaching reflections, and students’ self-reflection were collected at the seventh meeting and were analysed using thematic analysis, means that this paper use mix-method data analysis.The result of this study showed that the applied octalysis gamification frameworks can improve students’ engagement proved from students’ self-reflection using Likert scale which was analysed using explanatory sequential design method. Even though it gives positive effects, there are still many things that need to be concerned by the teacher, such as classroom management. This study suggested the teacher to have clear rules and procedures of playing game, so that students are behaving a good attitude towards classroom activity even though they engaged actively and motivated during the learning process.

Abstract

Drama in English is a part of art which has been related to linguistics. Some students’ fluency will be connected with the four aspects of language; such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It shows in some different styles but they will get better English through their capability. One of the aims in the process of conducting this research is connecting with the gap between English drama and ELL education on speaking. Fluency is not only about on transferring the idea but also creating the newest way how to study English in fun. Finally, we can make the deal for one of the most effective and fun things is learning by doing, their creativity is their speaking skill on practicing their English drama.
