Abstract

This study aims to describe the online English teaching and learning process through WhatsApp application at SMK Al Furqon Bantarkawung in the academic year 2020/2021 during Covid-19 pandemic. This is descriptive qualitative research in which the data are taken from observation, interview, and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the result of the research, the writers find out that online English teaching and learning through WhatsApp application at SMK Al Furqon Bantarkawung in 2020/2021 during Covid-19 pandemic is not enjoyable learning activity for all students. The students do not enjoy the online English learning because they cannot easily understand about the short material explanation and only in written form on WhatsApp. Meanwhile, the students enjoy the online English learning because they can join online English learning while doing something else, the teacher is friendly, and they can learn English anytime and anywhere. The English teacher uses problem-based learning, which purposes to make the students able to think critically and find other references related to the material by themselves.

Abstract

This research is carried out to improve the students’ writing ability in narrative text using Edmodo during the Covid 19 pandemic on tenth-grade students of SMKS Kerabat Kita Bumiayu in the academic year 2021/2022. The subject of this research is 32 students of the class X AKL3 (Accounting and Finance). The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The writers act as the teachers and Mrs. Laeli Rahma F, S.Pd is a collaborator in the teaching and learning activities. The writers use two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Each cycle also consists of two meetings. The writers use two methods to collect data. They are tests and questionnaires. The writers measure the students' writing ability in the narrative text by giving a pre-test before treatment. After being given a pre-test, the writers use Edmodo in cycles I and II. Based on the results, the writers find an increase in students’ writing ability in narrative text after using Edmodo. The end of the second cycle shows that 81.25% of the students reach the KKM (70). In the first cycle, the mean of post-test 1 (71.79) is higher than pre-test (64.57). The t-test calculation shows that the t-table is 2.04 while the t-test is 6.5. In the second cycle, the mean of post-test 2 (78.94) is also higher than post-test 1 (71.79). The result of the t-test is higher than the t-table that is 6.94 from t-table 2.04. It means that there is a difference between post-test 1 and post-test 2. In conclusion, Edmodo can improve the students’ writing ability in narrative during Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study is about three levels of description on simple declarative sentences in taylor swift’s album “1989”. To collect the data, the writers use descriptive qualitative and Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) as the method. The writers use Aarts theory (2001) to analyse simple declarative sentences and set of three levels of description. From the results of three levels of description on taylor swift’s album “1989”, it can be concluded that there are 138 simple declarative sentences. There are only 6 simple declarative sentences which have similar structure, which are: He says; I said; I did; I wish; He said; and We run. For the similar structure, function structure can be realized through S → S + P, form analysis is realized through S/MC → NP + VP, and thematic role can be identified through S → Agent + Predicate. The other sentences may have same structure in function but they have different structures in form or thematic role or otherwise.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to decribe the students’ difficulties in writing narrative text at tenth grade students of SMK Al Hikmah 2 Sirampog in the academic year 2021/2022. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or interpretation. The data analysis used in this study is a qualitative research. From the results of questionnaires and interviews, the writers conclude that the students have difficulties in writing Narrative text such as their grammar knowledge related to tenses, especially the simple past tense which is still very low, they cannot distinguish between narrative texts and other types of texts, even most of them do not know narrative texts and cannot write narrative texts because they do not know the structure, they are afraid of making mistakes when writing narrative texts because they do not master a lot of vocabulary.

Abstract

The study is to analyze Expansion Relation on clause complex of Nadiem Makarim’s dialogue. The source of data is utterances of Nadiem Makarim in Singapore Summit 2020. The dialogue talks about education problem in that pandemic era of Covid-19. In this study, the writers analyze Elaboration, Extension and Enhancement which belong to Expansion. The writers apply Functional Grammar theory from Linda Gerot and Peter Wignell (1994). Based on characteristics of this study, the writers implement descriptive qualitative method, Simak Bebas Libat Cakap, and Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung. The writers conduct six steps to analyze the data. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 68 clause complexes. It is found out 95 times of Elaboration, 91 times of Extension and 51 times of Enhancement. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the identification of Expansion is dominated by Elaboration.

Abstract

This study reveals the meaning of short story written by Herman RN entitled “Bungkusan” using the five system of Barthesian codes i.e. hermeneutic, cultural, symbolic, narrative and semantic code. Using the method of descriptive analysis, this study presents the meaning of the short story by explaining one by one the code meaning of the text. The result of the study shows that through five system of Barthesian codes, the humanity facts containing in the short story can be realized i.e. the protest toward the uncertainty of Aceh’s social life. An unstoppable political conflict, rapid modernization, as well as natural disasters are the factors underlining the facts found in the short story.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze inflectional and derivational affixes found in Justin Bieber’s album “Purpose”. The source of data is Justin Bieber;s album “Purpose”. In this thesis, the writer applies Morphology theory from Mc Charthy in 2002. This study is descriptive qualitative which implements SBLC (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap) to collect the data. The technique of data analysis is Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung. The writer takes several steps to analyze the data which are: downloading the song lyrics, reading the song lyrics one by one carefully, listing the words that would be analyzed by her into the rule of word structure and tree diagrams, drawing all of inflection and derivation, identifying the elements which found in inflection and derivation (prefix, root, and suffix), describing the analysis in each identification, and drawing a conclusion from her analysis. The analyzed inflectional forms by using rule and derivational forms are used tree diagram and rule. This study shows that there are 170 words which consist of 121 inflectional forms, 45 derivational forms, and 4 inflectional and derivational forms. From 121 inflectional forms, they contain 82 verb forms, 20 Noun forms, 9 Adjective forms, 7 Auxiliaries and 3 Pronouns. From 45 derivational forms, they consist of 12 Adjective forms, 27 Noun forms, 2 Verb forms, and 4 Adverb forms. From 4 inflectional and derivational forms, they comprise 3 Nouns derived from Verbs and 1 Noun derived from Noun.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study finds out the transformation of narrative structure in two literary works that is a novel entitled True Story Gitta Sessa Wanda Cantika by Agnes Danovar and a movie by Harris Nizam entitled Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan. The intertextuality theory in reception becomes the base of the study. The technique of obtaining the data is by reading the novel and watching the movie carefully. All data is categorized based on the topic of discussion then described in details. The result shows that there are transformation in narrative structure of both works each on the characterization, settings, and plot. The transformation indicates that the novel is responded and given meaning in the following work i.e. movie by Harris Nizam. The characterization is seen from the aspects of naming, personality, and internal conflict. The setting is from the addition and reduction of setting, meanwhile the plot is seen from the startup of the story, the complexness of the conflict, and the presentation of ending.
