Abstract

In the last decade, Mandarin Chinese has been standing as the most studied language as a foreign language. The structure of Mandarin Chinese is not necessarily similar to the grammatical structure of Mandarin Chinese learners. In daily life, structure of different ideas produces different pragmatic functions in the grammar. This article aims to describe the difference between the discourse of "adjective + a little bit" and Indonesia. The data source comes from the Modern Chinese Corpus of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. The stages of data analysis are data sorting, data classifying into four groups, and data analysis. From the corpus, there are 697 sentences with一點/ yi dian/ adverbs in "adjective +【一點】/ yi dian/" including【比較+形容詞+一點】or comparison+adjective+【一點】/ yi dian/] and 56 sentence-word adverbs in "[adjective+particle【了】/le/+【一點】/ yi dian/]" which contains"【太+adjective" +了+一點】. The first group of "adjective +【一點】" category has (83.95%) sentences; there are 66 adjective categories with only one word such as: 【好】/hao/ good,【多】/duo/many,【小】/xiao/small,【大】/da/big, etc. and 554 have two words such as: 【大方】/dafang/ generous,【隨便】/fangbian/ comfortable,【舒服】/shufu/ comfortable, etc. and a sentence pattern using "Adjective+Adjective's form +【一點】, such 【小小】/xiao xiao/ "small". The category of the second group of "comparative + adjective +【一點】'a little' " has 65 (8.6%) sentences. There are 42 (5.58%) sentences in the third group of "Adjective + 【了】/le/ + a little " category. The fourth group of "【太】/tai/+ Adjective + a little bit" structure has only 14 sentences (1.87%). Keywords: adjective, a little, Mandarin Chinese, Indonesian language, comparison

Abstract

Purwa shadow puppets are divided into several ages, namely myths about the gods, Lokapala, Arjunasasrabahu, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. The Kembang Dewa Retna play  is based on a story originating from the Ramayana period. The battle for primacy and outrage in the story is built through the plays performed by the dalang. This study discusses the relationship between symbols, power, and supernatural powers in the wayang kulit play of the Ramayana era entitled Kembang Dewa Retna by Ki Manteb Soedharsono. Abstract

Indonesian Government has used online posters to deliver the information regarding Covid-19 which is known as the new variant of virus spreading in the world. Covid-19 posters as multimodality discourse coming with two different semiotic modes that explains ideas and information related to Covid-19. The problem of this study was how the posters deliver and represent the idea of Covid-19 discourse through two semiotic modes. This study aims to describe the ideational and representational meaning of two semiotic modes, verbal and visual. This study used qualitative descriptive method. Verbal data was clauses and visual data was images on the poster of Covid-19. The source of data was the poster downloaded from a website https://promkes.kemkes.go.id/. This study used Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory of Halliday (2004) to analyze ideational meaning of the verbal text and Visual Grammar Theory of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2021) to identify representational meaning of the images on the poster. Based on the analysis, verbal text represents the dominance of material process while the images describe the symbolic process. The dominance of material process means the strong intention that the messages deliver to encourage the readers to carry out the activities. Then, conceptual symbolic process and narrative act process represents meaning and experience of the verbal text.

Abstract

This article explores diasporic problems faced by an Indonesian migrant housemaid working in Saudi Arabia, presented in Denny J. Ali's essay poem "Minah Tetap Dipancung" or "Minah is determined to be beheaded" (2012). This article uses diasporic literary criticism and poetry explication to reveal her tricky situation, struggle against oppression, and voice of hope concerning her profession. The analysis shows that Minah experiences disillusionment. She is oppressed, abused, and alienated because of the cultural barrier. However, Minah resists class and gender-based subjugation. Although she is helpless and determined to face the death sentence, she stands for her dignity. This poem also voices the need to redefine the concept of a migrant housemaid. Government and migrant worker stakeholders should set political will for improving the condition of migrant woman workers, especially legal protection, advocacy, and treatment as professional workers free from cultural bias in the destination country. A migrant housemaid is not merely an informal and private worker that the employer can treat as property arbitrarily. This poem advocates redefining her as a professional worker viewed from a broader cultural perspective, protected before the law, and provided with appropriate rights and advocacy. Keywords: migrant worker, diasporic problems, diasporic literary criticism, class-gender subjugation

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the styles of teaching and motivational strategies carried out by two teachers in Frank McCourt's Teacher man (McCourt, 2005) and School of Rock, a film (Linklater, 2003). The comparative method is used in this study as an effort to take a scientific approach on literary works. The researcher sorted, dissected, and compared literary works in different settings to make meaning, to convey their feelings, sentiments, and concepts to the author himself as a reader. Based on the findings, teachers in Frank McCourt's Teacher man (McCourt, 2005) and School of Rock, a film (Linklater, 2003) make their students interested in the material being discussed in class they are more likely to channel their own internal motivation towards education and end up learning more. Teaching beyond the curriculum standards should be viewed as incredible opportunity to create meaningful lessons that will capture the attention of all students. Keywords: motivational strategies, teaching styles, teaching

Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of conspiracy between idealism and power in the context of critical discourse analysis studies. The domination of power makes idealism lose its resonance as a pillar of truth and justice which is marked by resistance and trust from its readers. This needs to be studied academically with The van Leeuwen's theory in the perspective of critical discourse analysis. The purpose of this study is to photograph the relationship between power and idealism, marginalization, and conspiracies of the mass media and their readers. In Theo van Leeuwen's theory, a problem is analyzed by exclusion and inclusion based on ideology. This type of research is a qualitative research that describes descriptively the problems in the Nusantara column in the North Sumatran Waspada newspaper. The source of the research data was obtained from the Nusantara column in the Waspada newspaper by analyzing the items per sentence according to Theo van Leeuwen's theory. Keywords: Idealism, Power, Critical Discourse Analysis
