Abstract

Lore Olympus is a webtoon that uses color as a  sign for each of its characters. In interpreting symbols,  this study applies Peirce's semiotic theory related to representamen or signs,  objects, and interpretants. This study aims to describe the meaning of colors in the six characters of gods and goddesses in Lore Olympus. This research used qualitative methods. It was found that the colors in the six characters of gods and goddesses had a general and specific meaning that were used to convey their personalities. The blue color symbolizes  Hades's cold personality, the pink color represents  Persephone's kindness, the green color represents Demeter's overprotective personality, the purple color represents  Zeus as the king of the gods,  the yellow color symbolizes  Hera's cheerful and jealousy, and lastly, the red color symbolizes  Hermes's extroverted and passionate personality. Finally, it is hoped that this study can create more insight into color as an aspect that can affect personality.Keywords: colors, Lore  Olympus, semiotic, symbol

Abstract

Metaphorical expressions (MEs) are abundant in political text and their translation "Žposes challenges particularly for retaining the implicit meaning. This research focuses on examining the use of conceptual metaphors (CMs) "Žin Indonesian "Žpolitical news and their English translation. The objectives "Ž are to identify types and the source domain of CMs and to explain how the CMs are translated."Ž "ŽGrounding on mixed-methods, the data were metaphorical expressions in "Ž the Indonesian and English versions of Tempo weekly magazines in April, May, and June in 2021. Metaphor Identification Procedure  (MIP) was "Žapplied to determine the metaphoricity of metaphors in the STs and Indonesian dictionary (KBBI) was also employed to avoid intuition "Ždecision-making. "ŽThe results indicate that CMs are commonly used in "Žpolitical news in order to popularize, concretize, and dramatize issues. Structural metaphors are found "Žas the most dominant type and twenty source domains are found "Žin the STs with war metaphor as the most significant domain. In terms of the translation, the study demonstrates that non "Žmetaphorical translation is the most frequently used technique to render metaphors "Žinto English TT. As a result, the translation reduces the "Žmetaphoric function of the original expressions.Keywords: political news, conceptual metaphor, translation technique

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the different types of verbal humor in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, classify the translation techniques used to translate the verbal humor in the Indonesian subtitle, and assess the acceptability of the verbal humor translation. This study makes use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method was used to define, classify, and describe the verbal humor types and the translation techniques. Furthermore, the quantitative method was used to assess the translation's acceptability. The data were analyzed by comparing the dialogue transcript from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with its Indonesian subtitle. The findings show that sarcasm is the most prevalent type of verbal humor. This is consistent with the main character, Willy Wonka, who is highly judgmental and arrogant. The most common translation technique discovered is transfer, which means that the subtitle delivers the verbal humor word for word. The acceptability score of the verbal humor translation is 2.5, indicating that the audience must reread and rethink the humor to understand it. Abstract

Politics (facts) and literature (fiction) are two things that both exist and are needed by society. The two are also often linked together. The specific relationship between politics understood as a way of doing things and literature understood as a practical form of writing. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design to trace the re-interpretation of political facts in modern Indonesian novels written during the post-reform era. The research data sources are post-reform novels published in modern Indonesian literature that reinterpret political facts. These political facts can be found through the thematic aspects, the mindset and actions of the characters, the arrangement of the plot (conflict), and descriptions of the story setting which are integral to the whole fictional story. The determination of novels to be used as data sources is based on the following considerations: (a) novels that re-interpret political facts related to the historical events of the 30 September 1965 Movement, (b) novels published during the post-reform era (2000s and above), and (c) novels written by female authors are of a generation that did not directly experience the events of the 30 September 1965 Movement. The results of the study are as follows. First, the political facts expressed in the novel, namely (a) the kidnapping and murder of seven generals, (b) the Cakrabirawa elite troops, (c) the kidnapping and murder of people who were considered to be part of the Indonesian Communist Party, (d) detention on the island Buru, (e) granting status as a descendant of the PKI, and (f) abolishing citizenship status for students studying in certain countries deemed to be affiliated with the communist party. Second, the reinterpretation of historical facts in the novel, namely (a) related to the journey of the past, (b) part of the journey of Indonesian history, (c) understanding from the human side, and (d) choices and awareness of the journey of life in the future. It is hoped that the results of the research can be implemented in teaching literature in schools and the wider community through scientific forums in an effort to socialize the possibility of using modern literary works as a source of historical information to support efforts to understand Indonesian history. If used critically and combined with other sources, novels that actualize and reinterpret political facts can be used as a source of knowledge and understanding of the nation's history. Keywords: political facts, reinterpretation, G30S/PKI movement, modern Indonesian novels

Abstract

Localization of video games makes it easier for players with different language settings to play foreign games. However, a few games customized their game with cultural terms that may confuse the player. This research aimed to examine (1) cultural resistance and negotiation terms, (2) and the subtitling strategy translation on the game Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror - The Tied Corpse by StoryTale Studios. The data sources were extracted from words, phrases, and sentences from the game subtitles in Indonesian and English versions. Document observation was used as the data collection technique, meanwhile content analysis was used as the data analysis technique. Cultural-related term classification data were analyzed using the combined taxonomic theory of cultural-term from (Newmark, 1988; Tomalin and Stempleski, 2013; Zare-Behtash and Firoozkoohi, 2013). Gottlieb's (1994) subtitle translation strategy was used by the researcher to identifiy the translation process. The result shows six resisted data in three cultural-term categories; Dialect, Ideas; Beliefs. On the other hand, forty-one negotiated data were found in ten cultural-related categories; Ideas; beliefs, Concept; religion, Dialect, Gesture and Habit, Ecology, Idiom, House and Towns, Artefact, Date, and Antrophonym. The Imitation subtitling strategy is found in the resisted data. Meanwhile, the negosiated data applied the Transfer, Transcription, Expansion, Paraphrase, and Deletion subtitling strategy. Abstract

Language and culture are two things that are closely related to each other. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural notes presented in the book "Bahasaku 1: Ayo Bicara Bahasa Indonesia". The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with a content analysis approach. The data source in this study was the book 'Bahasaku 1: Ayo Bicara Bahasa Indonesia' compiled by the Indonesian Language Institute Kursul Alam, Yogyakarta. Data were analyzed in five stages, namely compiling notes, disassembling data, rearranging based on data, interpreting, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the data analyses, it can be concluded that the cultural notes in the book My Language 1: Let's Talk Indonesian can be grouped into eight categories, namely: 1) greetings; 2) eating habits; 3) rubber watch; 4) small talks; 5) mudik; 6) coutercies of guests and hosts; 7) beach suits and the myth of Nyai Roro Kidul; and 8) 'kiri' in the context of public transportation. The cultural notes in the book "Bahasaku 1: Ayo Bicara Bahasa Indonesia" belonging to Alam Bahasa Indonesia have been well organized. The cultural notes in this textbook are not only specifically listed in the "Cultural Notes" section at the end of each lesson, but, they are also integrated well into every text in the lesson. My language book 1 contains clear concepts and understandings that can accurately describe the cultures that have developed in the Indonesian society.Keywords: culture notes, textbook, foreign language, cultural understanding, BIPA

Abstract

The Low Achiever's writing is frequently categorized as the low coherent text due to the quality of their writings based on the rubric used at school. Hence, the focus in this study is to analyze the Types of Theme and Thematic Progression patterns found in Low Achiever's Descriptive Writings with descriptive-qualitative research design. The objective is to observe the coherency quality of low achiever's based on the analysis of Theme and Thematic Progression. The steps are selecting two low achiever's descriptive texts based on the school's rubric, dividing them to clauses, analyzing both the Theme and the Thematic progression, then providing the results of the analysis. The result shows that all types of Themes and Thematic Progressions are found in both writings. The Unmarked Topical Theme and Constant Theme Patterns are most frequently used. The conclusion is that Low Achiever's Descriptive Writings cannot be considered as a low-coherent text based on School's rubric only, Theme and Thematic Progression analysis is suggested to be conducted for extra observation and evaluation despite of the easy and common themes many constant types used to start the clauses in both of their writings. Keywords: descriptive text, low achiever's writings systemic functional linguistics, theme, and thematic progression

Abstract

International teaching practicums help pre-service teachers (PSTs) advance professionally in teaching and gain multicultural competence. This study aims at describing an investigation of challenges and problems faced by the pre-service teachers during their international teaching program in an Indonesian elementary school and how to cope with them revealed by the PSTs' voices. This qualitative case study started with conducting a survey questionnaire covering various aspects of results, challenges, and problems regarding the aspects of pedagogical, content knowledge, technology, and cultural gaps faced by 7 international pre-service teachers (PSTs) from the Netherlands. The survey results were then further examined through in-depth interviews with the PSTs and thematic analysis was conducted to examine the data. The findings showed that there were three categories of problems faced by the PSTs: issues from the students, problems from the PSTs, and problems from the schools or stakeholders. The PSTs could adapt to the situation and find solutions to the problems. They tried to be "Indonesians," enjoyed every activity and difference, and communicated to the right person to solve the problems. The study also revealed that the PSTs hoped that the lecturers could have spent more time at school and given them more advice. They wished the university could improve the scheduling system and give them a chance to teach in more than one school to be able to experience different school cultures. This study recommends further investigation of how a good international teaching program should be developed and managed.Keywords: pre-service teachers, international teaching practicum, teaching English to young learners

Abstract

This study attempted to explore theme-based tasks using familiar topics in promoting learners' productive skills namely speaking and writing skill at Indonesian secondary school context. This study was pre-experimental research undertaken in five junior secondary schools. There are eighty-six students participated as research respondents. Test and observation checklist used as research instruments. The research findings reported the mean scores on productive skills acquired by the students were getting improvement from pretest to posttest. In speaking skill, the mean score of posttest was 58.95 was better than 40.76 in pretest mean score. Similarly, the mean score of writing posttest was 76.85 was higher than 63.86 in pretest. It indicated that the progress of students' score in speaking skill was 18.19 and the progress of students' score in writing skill was 12.99. Although the gain scores in speaking and writing tests are slightly different, but it can be stated the students' productive skills promote significantly. Then, the result of t-test value on students' speaking skill posttest and pretest was 18.37, while the t-test value on students' writing skill posttest and pretest was 16.42. The both of these values are higher than t-table value. It indicated there is a significant difference between pretest and posttest for both tests. The students' English productive skills after treated by implementation of theme-based tasks were categorized as good achievement. Additionally, the majority of students' learning activities in English class are categorized as good category. They participated positively in English learning activities in terms of good attention, high seriousness, and activeness in group work.Keywords: Familiar Topics, Improvement, Productive Language, Theme-Based Tasks

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of appreciation to explore the values of the Minangkabau story, even though the report also conveys a religious message. By using the close reading technique, this paper interprets the various moral messages contained in 11 Minangkabau stories, namely Anak Mudo, Limau Anyuik, The Honest Child, Batu Manangih, Boncah Tangkuluak, Carito Bukik Balacan, Kuciang jo Harimau, Rumah Raksasa, Urang Kayo Sampilik, Kawan nan Setia,, and Tupai jo Limbek. From the analysis of this story, moral messages were found, such as honesty, respect for mothers, humility, and mutual help. This morality is seen to be by Islamic character, based on the two measuring tools Gus Dur regarding the principle/consistency and sincerity of the message content, and also based on the reality of the Minangkabau people's customs intertwined with Islam. This story articulates the Minangkabau community's ability to cultivate themselves by adhering to traditions and Islam.Keywords: Morality, Value, Message, Minangkabau Story, Islam
