Abstract

This research aims to describe: (1) the use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning in English class, (2) the use of audio-visual media in improving the motivation and reading skills of the seventh-grade students of MTs Al Iman Purworejo. This research is classroom action research which used Kemmis & McTaggart model with two cycles. The subjects were students of class VII D of MTs Al Iman Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015. The objects were the audio-visual media, and students' motivation and reading skills in English. The results of this study show that the use of audio-visual media improved 90% of the students to have a high motivation in English class that includes attitude, interest, and effort in learning English. In addition, the use of audio-visual media also improved 83% of the students to gain their reading skills achievement of descriptive text to get scores higher than the minimum standards. The result of the pretest showed 57% of students had high motivation, in the first cycle there were 70% of students who had high motivation, and in the second cycle there were 90% of students who had high motivation. The students' reading skill also improved; in the initial test 48% of students had scores higher than the minimum standard; in the first cycle, there were 65% of students having scores higher than the minimum standard, and; in the second cycle, there were 83% of students having scores higher than the minimum standard. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of audio-visual media can improve the motivation and reading skills in English lessons of class VII D students' of MTs Al Iman Purworejo.Keywords: motivation, reading skill, audio-visual media MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI DAN KETERAMPILAN MEMBACA SISWA PADA PENGAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS MELALUI MEDIA AUDIO-VISUAL ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk  mendeskripsikan: (1) penggunaan media audio-visual dalam proses belajar mengajar di kelas bahasa Inggris, (2) penggunaan media audio-visual dalam meningkatkan motivasi dan kemampuan membaca siswa kelas VII MTs Al Iman Purworejo. Penelitian ini adalah tindakan kelas yang menggunakan model Kemmis & McTaggart dengan dua siklus. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII D MTs Al Iman Purworejo tahun akademik 2014/2015. Objek penelitian ini adalah media audio-visual, motivasi dan kemampuan membaca siswa pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media audio-visual meningkatkan 90% dari siswa untuk memiliki motivasi tinggi terhadap kelas bahasa Inggris yang meliputi sikap, keinginan, dan usaha dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, penggunaan media audio-visual juga meningkatkan 83% dari siswa untuk mendapatkan prestasi kemampuan membaca pada teks deskripsi dengan mendapatkan nilai lebih dari standar minimal. Pada uji awal, 57% siswa memiliki motivasi tinggi, pada siklus pertama terdapat 70% siswa memiliki motivasi tinggi, dan pada siklus kedua terdapat 90% siswa memiliki motivasi tinggi. Kemampuan membaca siswa juga mengalami peningkatan dimana pada tes awal terdapat 48% siswa mendapat nilai diatas standar minimal, pada siklus pertama terdapat 65% siswa mendapat nilai diatas standar minimal, dan pada siklus kedua terdapat 83% siswa mendapat nilai diatas standar minimal. Dengan demikian disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media audio-visual dapat meningkatkan motivasi dan keterampilan membaca pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VII D MTs Al Iman Purworejo.Kata Kunci: motivasi, keterampilan membaca, media audio-visual

Abstract

Cablaka is the central of model care of the Banyumas man character. The character perceived by the outers that Banyumas man have no regard on ethics, they are vulgars, or be even they behave unwell because they rude their attitude can hurt others. Moreover, they speak many vulgar words. Cablaka has internalized into a whole circle of Banyumas man model through their egalitary, freedom, and frankliness impressed to be a vulgarity.Keywords : cablaka, model care, character, ethics, vulgar words, egalitary, freedom, and frankliness.

Abstract

Abstract            (Title: Social Problems in the Novel "Di Batas Pelangi" By Achi TM). This study aims to describe the social problems of family disorganization and violations of community norms in the novel In Batas Pelangi by Achi TM. The source of research data is linguistic exposure that contains problems of family disorganization and norm violations. Data collection by reading repeated readings and recording. Data were analyzed using a sociological approach to literature. The results of the study are as follows. First, the family disorganization experienced by the Wijaya family in the form of lack of communication between family members. This matter has caused ignorance and lack of attention of Mr. Wijaya and his wife towards their children. Secondly, due to the lack of concern and attention of Mr. Wijaya and his wife on the lifestyle of their seven children, their children finally did things that violated community norms, namely drug use, theft, and abuse.Keywords: disorganization, family, norms, norm violations

Abstract

An error in language use is an instance of using language in a way whichdiverges from the norms of the target language. Such errors are natural phenomenain the process of language learning. Analyses of such errors have three importantfunctions: a pedagogical function, a methodological function, and a facilitativefunction in a process of language acquisition. Abstract

(Title: An Analysis of Literary Materials in Indonesian Textbook to Junior Hig School/MTs VII). This study attempted to describe (1) knowledge aspects of literary teaching materials; (2) skill aspects of literary teaching materials; and (3) attitude aspects of literary teaching materials in Indonesian textbook for Junior Hig School/MTs VII grades by using education character approach. This research used qualitative descriptive approachment type of document analysis. The source of the research data was based on  the Indonesian textbook of SMP/MTs VII. The technique to collect the data was done by reading and recording technique by using instrument which had been validated in the form of document analysis guide. The research data were analyzed using Miles and Hubermen model which included data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study indicated that the knowledge, skills, and attitude aspect of literary materials had fulfilled in the Indonesian textbook for SMP/MTs VII with details (1) based on knowledge aspect of literary materials, the conceptual knowledge was more dominated than factual and procedural knowledge, (2) based on skills aspects of literary materials, the reading skills most often taught than listening, speaking, and writing skills; and (3) based on attitude aspects literary materials, the social attitudes is more dominated than spiritual attitudes.Keywords: literary materials, textbooks, character education.

Abstract

The study aims at developing a valid and reliable test to measure students' Englishpronunciation mastery. To meet the objective, two kinds of instruments were developed,namely recognition and production tests. The instruments were tried out to students fromthree pronunciation classes, and the results were then analyzed through validity andreliability tests and an item analysis. Statistical analyses showed that the instruments wereunsatisfactory and needed revisions. After some revisions and try-outs, the revisedinstruments proved to be valid and reliable with reliability coefficients of 0.940 for theproduction test and 0.889 for the recognition test, and difficulty indices of 0.538(moderate) and 0.546 (moderate) respectively.Keywords: pronunciation, validity, reliability, difficulty indices
