Abstract

Teacher competence is a crucial factor to the success of BIPA teaching and learning. In terms of pedagogy, a competent BIPA teacher naturally is not only proficient at theories, but also adept at materializing them into classroom instructions, to help students learn effectively. Nonetheless, trapped inside knowledge illusion of one’s own competence, a teacher might believe having grasped the latest development in language teaching, while in fact, although capable of reciting jargons smoothly, that teacher still teaches traditionally. This paper (re-)visits trends in modern language teaching, reflecting on which we have genuinely understood and fully implemented, and which still require our study. Ultimately, this paper expects to contribute to the larger discussion of how BIPA teacher competence should be defined and could be improved.           Keywords: teacher competence, language pedagogy, classroom practice, jargons, reflection

Abstract

Drawing from Discursive Social Psychology (DSP) (Potter, 1998; Potter Edwards, 2001), this study is concerned with how attitudes, behaviours, and identity can be observed through language in use or discourse. Focusing on the narratives of the marginalized Chinese Indonesians, it particularly aims at revealing behaviours in coping with the majority group, and how such behaviours may in turn shape intergroup relations and ethnic identity. The data were in the form of narratives of personal experience of Chinese Indonesians collected through interview which were then scrutinized through in-depth analysis within their socio-political context. It has been revealed that in dealing with unequal power relations, two behaviours are embraced – convergence and divergence – which are manifested in various discursive and social practices of adapting to the wider society and maintaining aspects of ethnic identity. Any choice of behaviours can have consequences for interethnic relations and ethnic identity. The ideological power exercised by different regimes has obviously constructed ethnic identity and thus made it historically and ideologically contested. The contestation is discursively articulated through the negotiation between ethnic and national identity, the labelling practice using the words Cina and Tionghoa, and the perpetuation of stereotypes associated with the ethnic group. Keywords:  ethnicity, discourse, identity, social-psychology

Abstract

The Toraja ethnic has an oral tradition of Singgi' which is passed down orally from generation to generation. This tradition is carried out at rituals, which are spoken by tradition holders or groups of people. The study outlined in this article aimed to describe the Toraja ethnic culture represented in the vocabulary in Singgi’ speech. The focus of this study was to describe the cultural dynamic and the cultural attitude of Toraja ethnic represented in vocabulary in Singgi' speech. The study was conducted through a qualitative approach using hermeneutic analysis tools. The data of this research were speech in Singgi 'and the daily context and activities of the people of Tana Toraja. The data was collected through document studies, interviews, and observations. Through qualitative analysis and hermeneutic interpretation, it was found that in Singgi’ speech, there was an absorption of vocabulary from Indonesian and old vocabulary in Toraja. The diversity of vocabulary represented that in Tana Toraja society there was a cultural dynamic that requires the Toraja language to absorb vocabulary from other languages to convey the cultural messages. Singgi' speech used old words of Toraja language that were rarely used in daily communication to convey the cultural attitudes of the Tana Toraja people. The findings showed that the vocabulary used in Singgi' speech represented the Toraja ethnic culture. This finding has important benefits in preserving the culture of the Tana Toraja community, for teaching material in the development of character education, and as a reference in developing further studies. Keywords: cultural representation, Toraja ethnic, vocabulary, Singgi’ speechREPRESENTASI BUDAYA ETNIK TORAJA PADA PENGGUNAAN KOSAKATA DALA TUTURAN SINGGI’AbstrakEtnik Toraja memiliki tradisi lisan Singgi 'yang diturunkan secara lisan dari generasi ke generasi.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: eksistensi, perempuan, Ndiaye, kedirian, pergumulan batin  THE SELF-EXISTENCE OF THREE WOMEN IN MARIE NDIAYE'S TROIS FEMME PUISSANTES AbstractHumans throughout their life continuously take actions to show their existence. The purpose of this research is to describe the existence of the three women represented in Marie Ndiaye's “Trois Femmes Puissantes.” This research is a qualitative descriptive study by using interpretive analysis techniques and an existentialism approach as a reference for analysis. Data in the form of words, phrases, sentences or paragraphs related to the existence of the three female characters, namely Norah, Fanta, and Khady Demba which were collected through repeated reading, note taking, grouping or classifying, and analysing or interpreting.  The results showed that the three women stated represented figures who tried to fight against white domination, patriarchy and capital domination. The three of them are becoming individuals who act and own their life to show their existence. Anxiety, fear, pain, suffering, traumatic experiences, emotions, and despair that often confine women, are interpreted as their experiences as a woman and as a person. Norah's life bitterness due to the traumatic feeling  of losing a father’s figure, the love bond of Fanta's imprisoned husband, and the bondage of economic necessity that surrounds Khady Demba did not make these three women despair, but instead made them concrete and unique individuals in choosing their own existence, explicitly as lawyer, housewife, or sex worker. They choose to act and show their existence consciously.  Keywords: existence, women, Ndiaye, self, inner struggle

Abstract

This study aims to describe the aesthetics of Senapati Pinilih, a ketoprak (Javanese play) story by Bondan Nusantara. The material object of the study is the story and the formal object is its philosophy of beauty or aesthetics. The ketoprak story is an integral part of the ketoprak art. The aesthetics of Senapati Pinilih is approached by Monroe Beardsley’s theory in his book Aesthetics: Problems in the Philosophy of Criticism that explains that there are three characteristics of the good or beautiful nature of aesthetic objects, namely unity, complexity, and intensity. The data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation study. They were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data classification, and data display, and by the methods of verstehen, interpretation, language analysis, and heuristics. The findings are as follows. Aesthetics has integrated patterns and forms, especially for the characters in Senapati Pinilih, and serves as markers of the story atmosphere. In this story, Bondan Nusantara wraps the theme, dialog media, directions of motion and behavior into a unified whole. With an unconventional plot Bondan Nusantara makes this story complex, rich in contents and mutually contrary elements. In this story, Bondan Nusantara structures the story dynamically, not monotonously, so that the concentration or attention of the readers (or viewers) can be maintained throughout the progress of the story. Serious nuances are proportionately and effectively combined with humorous ones. Keywords: ketoprak story, aesthetics, character education ESTETIKA SENAPATI PINILIH, SEBUAH CERITA KETOPRAK OLEH BONDAN NUSANTARA Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan estetika Senapati Pinilih, sebuah cerita ketoprak (Jawa) oleh Bondan Nusantara.
