Abstract

This study aims to explore the constestation of French writers’ ideologies during the era of World War II through their works. The primary data sources were “Le Mur”by Sartre, “L’Etranger” by Albert Camus, and “L’Attente de Dieu” Simone Weil. On the one hand the writers play roles as ones telling the world through their fiction, but on the otherhand they have active roles in positioning their believed ideologies. The study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis method. The discourses emphasize that God is viewed as personal, social, historical experiences contested by Sartre, Camus, and Weil in their works. They discuss God using different perspectives. The findings show that God isphilosophically positioned at the levels of being existent and non-existent, present and absent, and active and passive. Sartre and Camus are on the same line when talking about God’s absence in human existence. Meanwhile, Simone Weil, who is very religious, views that God is concretely present in human life.

The research object was the television serial Dexter, which ranks five in popularity in the world. The data were collected by documenting 84 episodes of the serial having been broadcast since 2006. They were analyzed by means of content analysis and qualitative descriptive techniques. Based on the findings, the conclusions are as follows. Abstract

This study aims to describe newspaper attitudes towards and views of corruptioncases in Indonesia, manifested in (anti-)corruption editorials. Newspaper attitudes aremanifested through two frames, namely the one criticizing corruption news and theother supporting corruption news. The data were collected through a literature reviewand a recording method. They were analyzed by the correspondence and participatorymethods. The findings are as follows. First, by criticizing corruption news, Koran Tempoin its two editorials indicates a disagreement over corruption news. The disagreement iscaused by several weird facts in the court and the defense for the corruption investigatorwho, quite the contrary, was sent to prison. Second, with a frame of supporting corruptionnews, Kompas, Republika, Koran Tempo, Jawa Pos, and Suara Merdeka have attitudes andviews indicating agreement to support corruption news in newspapers. The supportrefers to efforts to eradicate corruption that can be manifested in the arrest of a suspectin corruption, the court, and the verdict on a suspect in corruption.

Abstract

This research and development study aims to produce models of teaching kits forwriting based on the genre process approach for junior high school students. The procedure employed the R2D2 model, consisting of three main stages, i.e. (1) definition, (2) design and development, and (3) dissemination. The data consisted of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using the domain analysis technique with critical and reflective principles, while the quantitative data were analyzed using t-test with SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The study produces five models, i.e.: (1) a syllabus model, (2) a lesson plan model, (3) a learning materials model, (4) an evaluation instrument model, and (5) a teacher guide model of the teaching of writing. Based on the data analysis, the five models of teaching kits for writing are effective to improve the students’ writing ability.

Abstract

Kompetensi membaca yang paling sulit dicapai adalah memprediksi (92,5% menjawab salah), memahami ide-ide penjelas ( 82% menjawab salah), dan memecahkan masalah (60% menjawab salah).Kata kunci: skemata, membaca pemahaman, taksonomi Ruddell  THE EFFECT OF SCHEMATA ON THE READING COMPREHENSION COMPETENCIES BASED ON RUDDELL’S TAXONOMY AbstractThis study aimed to find out the effect of schemata on the reading comprehension competencies based on Ruddell’s and reading competencies that students find it difficult to acquire. The research sample comprised six semester students of PBSI FBS UNY. The sampling technique was the random sampling technique. The data were collected using a multiple choice reading comprehension test and a short answer reading schemata test. The reliability of the reading comprehension test was assessed by the Quest program and Item Response Theory and that of the reading schemata test by Cronbach’s Alpha. The data analysis used univariate analysis of covariance which specifically focused on the Fobserved value for the reading comprehension competencies based on Ruddell’s taxonomy. The results of the study showed that schemata, theoretically assumed to affect the reading competencies, had no effect on them. This was indicated by the results of the statistical analysis using univariate analysis of covariance test yielding Fobserved = 0.560 with a significance value of 0.4570.05, showing that there was no effect of schemata on the reading competencies based on Ruddell’s taxonomy. In Ruddell’s taxonomy, the assessed competencies are not partial but they are composites of several competencies and sub-competencies. The most difficult reading competencies were predicting (92.5% answering incorrectly), understanding explanatory ideas (82% answering incorrectly), and solving problems (60% answering incorrectly). Keywords: schemata, reading comprehension, Ruddell’s taxonomy
