STUDIA ISLAMIKA (ISSN 0215-0492; E-ISSN: 2355-6145) is a journal published by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta. It specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general, and is intended to communicate original researches and current issues on the subject. This journal warmly welcomes contributions from scholars of related disciplines. STUDIA ISLAMIKA, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual journal (English and Arabic) that aims to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia’s Muslim history and present developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews from Indonesian and international scholars alike. STUDIA ISLAMIKA has been accredited by The Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia as an academic journal (SK Dirjen Dikti No. 56/DIKTI/Kep/2012).

Abstract

Mahmud Yunus is one of the Indonesian students who was in Cairo in the thirties and is seen to have made a great contribution to the development of national Islamic education since the time of Indonesian independence. Having finished his studies at al-Azhar University 1927, Yunus studies at Darul Ulum to widden his intellectual horizon untul he obtained his certificate in 1930. As a graduate of one of the most important centers of Islamic learning, he had a lofty status in the Muslim community. Yunus served as a teacher in an Islamic teacher training school (Normal Islam), in padang, West Sumatra and later he was appointeed as a goverment official, seeking to establish and improve Islamic school in Indonesia. He was also a rector and professor of Islamic education at the State Institute of Islamic Studies in Padang.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v2i3.831

Abstract

This article discusses the development of Syattariyah Sufi order as one of religious traditions in Aceh in the colonial era based on the manuscript of Muhammad Khatib Langien’s Mi‘rāj al-Sālikīn ilá Martabat al-Wāsilīn bi-Jāh Sayyid al-Mursalīn. The Syattariyah teachings in Mi‘rāj al-Sālikīn have proved the existence of Muhammad Khatib Langien in the Malay-archipelago world. In applying his teachings, Muhammad Khatib Langien has the different procedures than that one of  ‘Abd al-Raūf al-Fansuri. In addition to practical teachings, Muhammad Khatib Langien employs local symbols such as wearing skullcaps and turbans in the swear oath (bay‘ah) process. This tradition is meant to respond the foreign culture as well as to show the identity of each members of Syattariyah sufi order. It is proved that Muhammad Khatib Langien’s teachings that can be accepted by all people and groups even without having support from the local authorities at the time.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v20i3.515

Abstract

This article aims to provide a picture of the traditions of one of the ratib developed by the tariqah followers, namely ratlb al-Haddad, which is often linked to one of the authors and Sufi from Hadrami, Sayyid 'Abd Allah ibn 'Alwt al-Hnddad. In the Indonesian Muslim community, the tradition of rending ratib al-Haddad is believed to have its roots in the tenchings of 'Alawiyyah order. In several regions, such as Bekasi, West Jvan and in the Betawi community, for example, the reading of ratibib al-Haddad has become a tradition that is passed down from one generation to the next, and which is included on various occasions, such as major Islamic days of remembrance, and other religions celebrations.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i3.626

Abstract

Research in various public institutions of higher education in Indonesia, which forms the basis of this article revealed that - especially Islamic - books have been greatly influential in the dissemination process of individual thoughts, especially among campus Islamic activists. The original thought of an individual is influenced by his/her prior experiences, In the modern context, this means, by the most important media: books. Thus, the process of the transmission of ideology among campus Islamic activists is shaped by reference works published by Islamic publishers. Abstract

This article attempts to explore a study of Islam in Java in the frame of the above conception -the dialogue tradition. The process of acculturation between Islam and Javanese culture, which developed in the dialogue tradition, is the central point of this article. Religious discourses embodied in Javanese texts, such as suluk and babad, written in the period of the establishment of Islam until the 19th century, are considered as the cultural representation of the fault line -despite the harmonious reconciliation- between Islam and Javanese tradition. In this context, changes in social and political affairs in Javanese courts, especially crucial changes in the 19th century following the colonialism, implanted the emergence of religious discourses embedded in the Javanese texts observed in this article.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i2.712

In this article will be reviewed several factors that made al-Ghazali had a fascination for the Indonesian Islamic community. Abstract

This paper explores the role of Muslim organisations in the slow overthrow of President Sukarno between 30 September 1965 and 12 March 1967. It argues that their role in the process was far more important than is usually appreciated in the literature. But the primary focus here is on the surprisingly slow and hesitant evolution of the stances taken by Muslim organisations in this period on the question of Sukarno’s presidency, as well as on the one hundred and eighty degree turn that they eventually executed. From almost unqualified support for Sukarno in 1965 Indonesia’s Muslim organisations shifted, at markedly different speeds, to vehement opposition by early 1967. This article traces the shift and seeks to explain the complex of motivations and calculations that produced it and were also responsible for its varying pace. It thereby provides revealing insights into the political thinking and practices of Indonesia’s Muslim organisations in this period of political transformation and flux.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i2.1039

Abstract

Artikel ini memperlihatkan bahwa Islam Hadhari berfungsi tidak hanya sebagai respons religio-politik terhadap krisis internal yang dirasakan masyarakat Melayu, polarisasi budaya, dan politik global yang tidak seimbang, tetapi juga menunjukkan multi-interpretasi dari teks-teks Islam, sejarah, budaya dan konteks multikultural. Kasus Islam Hadhari menjadi contoh dari "tradisionalisme" dan "modernisme" Islam yang bukan dalam bentuk ideal, tetapi dalam ekspresi diskursif campuran. Islam Hadhari harus dipahami dalam kerangka persaingan ide-ide lokal dan global, yang muncul di negara-negara mayoritas Muslim di era negara-bangsa modern dan globalisasi. Artikel ini menunjukkan pentingnya mengamati reformasi Islam sebagai dialektika gerakan dan kontra-gerakan, wacana dan kontra-wacana, tetapi juga dalam hal waktu (masa lalu, sekarang, dan masa depan). Menggunakan teori modernisasi dalam menjelaskan hubungan antara Islam dan modernitas, artikel ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi dalam memperoleh jawaban mengenai kondisi sosial-politik yang membuat gagasan Islam progresif atau Islam peradaban harus terjadi. Abstract

This paper will assist in filling a gap in the knowledge, as well as invite historians to trace it further. This study is therefore important because it contains an approach that is different, but is the result of studies of Islam in South East Asia, especially of the network of ulama in the 17thand 18th centuries. This study concentrates on textual analysis of the work of al-Mutamakkin, Arsh al Muwahhidin. This work of course is not systematically kept, as it obviously was not intended as a holy book. To produce a map of the thinking and religious understanding of al-Mutamakkin, in this study the author uses an approach that has been offered by Muhammad Abed al Jabiri, namely a structuralist method, historical analysis (the socio-political setting), and critical ideology enhanced by anthropological analysis.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i1.673

Law no. 38/1999 on zakat administration was able to be successfully enacted not solely because the roots of democracy had began to grow in the country; but also because this law is based on the rationale purpose of zakat, that is, to help the poor. In this article, furthermore, the state is responsible to protect and provide necessary support for the poor and needy citizens, even though in fact, the state fails to do so, This is of course of great relevance considering the main aim of zakat is to improve the social and economic position of the poor.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.556
