STUDIA ISLAMIKA (ISSN 0215-0492; E-ISSN: 2355-6145) is a journal published by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta. It specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general, and is intended to communicate original researches and current issues on the subject. This journal warmly welcomes contributions from scholars of related disciplines. STUDIA ISLAMIKA, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual journal (English and Arabic) that aims to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia’s Muslim history and present developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews from Indonesian and international scholars alike. STUDIA ISLAMIKA has been accredited by The Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia as an academic journal (SK Dirjen Dikti No. 56/DIKTI/Kep/2012).

Abstract

This article delves into a manuscript of Nazam Tarekat written by Kiai Ahmad ar-Rifai Kalisalak. So far, there has been no study related to Kiai Ahmad ar-Rifai Kalisalak which used Nazam Tarekat as the primary source. The research on this manuscript and its social context highlights the special nature of Kiai Ahmad ar-Rifai’s teachings on Sufism, such as his attitude toward Javanese traditional leaders who have abandoned morality. The other special feature of his teachings on Sufism is that they show the determination of alim adil based on fiqh as the qualification for Sufi teachers. The analysis of this alim adil concept as the qualification for Sufi teachers, put into the dynamics of socio-religious movements in 19th century Java, reveals that besides being a qualification for teachers of Sufism, alim adil also became the ideology for the social protest movement against Dutch colonialization in Java. The strength of the fiqh factor in the concept of alim adil indicates that Kiai Ahmad ar-Rifai Kalisalak’s movement was far from messianic-millenarianism.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i3.3716

Abstract

Since Indonesia declared its sovereignty and its independence in 1945, relations between Christians and Muslims in this country has been characterized by cooperation, tension and competition. Until the 1960s the number of Muslims about 90 percent of the entire population, but in the early 1990s this figure dropped to 87.5 percent. Two and a half percent of the 185 million people is about 4.5 million, and of course the number is not small. Tension and often coloring competition relations between the two religions up to now, and keep in mind that the future Indonesia will depend largely on the direction and prospects between Christianity and Islam.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v2i1.842

Abstract

The study of Malay dialects was a specialist concern during the period of Dutch colonization of Indonesia and British colonization of the Malay peninsular. In recent times, the Malaysian National Language Council, the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, and its Indonesian counterpart, the Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa (PPPB), have devoted considerable resources to the study of Malay dialectology. Such dialect studies have necessarily had a geographical focus, by way of descriptive grammars of Malay dialects spoken in particular areas. Examples are the studies of Pontianak Malay (Kamal et. al' 1986) and Palembang Malay (Aliana et. al. 1987) published by the PPPB.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i1.672

Abstract

Darul Arqam was founded relatively late in 7968 in Malaysia, while Jemaat Tabligh was founded 1927 in India, but is active in nearly all countries where Muslims live. Both organizations could be described as grassroots and have from the very beginning sought to revitalize Islam by emphasizing piety, da'wa, Islamic rituals and most of all, the establishment of a utopian commune. Thus this article, amongst other things, seeks to analyze the influence that these two movements have on their followers' lives and the integration of those followers into their respective utopian projects.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i1.576

Abstract

Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) of State University Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, in cooperation with Center for the Study of Society and Culture (PMB) of Indonesian’s Science Foundation (LIPI), and Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), held a conference on “Redefining the Roles of Islamic Organizations in the Reformasi Era. ”The conference was divided into two sessions. In the first session we have Prof. Dr. Bahtiar Effendy, Dr. Hendro Prasetyo, and Drs. Anas Ahmadi, MA. In the second session we have Dr. Endang Turmudi from Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) and Dr. Abdul Mu’ti from Muhammadiyah.The seminar was designed to evaluate and discuss the roles of socio-religious organizations in Indonesia. The current understanding on the roles of socio religious organizations was being challenged and questioned. The seminar discussed the relationship between the state and the roles of these religious organizations during the Reformasi Era. These were among the important issues because transformation of ideas and movements have occurred within Islamic organizations in Indonesia.Since the beginning of the twentieth century, socio-religious organizations have played important roles in Indonesia’s nation building. Muhammadiyah, NU, and Persis are among the organizations which have contributed significantly to the development of Islam in Indonesia. They have been the driving forces for community development such as in education, socio-political, economy, and health. Abstract

In a recently published book, the present author argues that Asia is “the great laboratory of religious pluralism.” The jostling together of mosques, viharas, churches and all kinds of temples has long been a feature of the vibrant cities of Southeast Asia, while anthropologists have celebrated the diversity of its rural people. Yet there is a paradox. At the level of formal religious adherence, Southeast Asia looks to be one of the world’s least diverse regions. This article addresses both the deeper sources of religious tolerance and the modern factors tending, notably in Indonesia, to replace that pattern with one of greater religious conformity. The Indonesian state motto is the epitome of this paradox –Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, ‘They are many, yet they are one.’  The article concludes that while the older tolerance of diversity is indeed under threat today, Southeast Asia’s own traditions should prove a valuable supplement to modern human rights concepts in maintaining the balance.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v22i3.2352

Abstract

Centuries of Indonesian Muslims turned into Arabic to obtain fatwas they need on various religious issues that arise in the homeland. Among the books that contain these fatwas are Muhimmat al-bayan fi nafa'is as'ilat al-Hadith. This is a fatwa issued by the mufti-mufti of Mecca, especially at the end of the nineteenth century at the request of the Muslims in the archipelago.In the book contained a fatwa related to the attitude to be taken over the archipelago Muslims who reject the Dutch colonial government. In the fatwa colonial government itself was not challenged, and the colonial government implicitly recognized that infidels should. This fatwa is quite different from the views circulating in Aceh, where local clerics called for jihad against the infidel invaders. Buku tersebut berjudul Sejarah Nasional Indonesia (SNI), terdiri dari enam jilid dan terbit pada tahun 1977. Edisi revisi volume enam dan tambahan volume volume tujuh muncul pada tahun 1993.
