Abstract

On September 22, 2021, Cinta Laura delivered a commencement speech at the Launching Night for Religious Moderation Action held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Cinta Laura is known as a young female artist and grew up in an environment of Western education. Her attendance conveys a significant message about what and who the main target of the religious moderation policy is. This article employed a critical discourse analysis method to examine religious moderation through the lens of the hegemonic state policy. Secondary data are obtained from books, articles, opinions, and news in both print and electronic mass media that explain the concepts and ideas of religious moderation, especially since 2020. The question is, how is the policy of religious moderation constructed today? What is the purpose of the policy? The article argues that the state promotes religious moderation to strengthen the legitimacy of the new nationalism. This policy aims to nationalize religious views to influence how people view the relationship between religion and the state. It is accomplished, in part, by implementing policies that promote the debunking of narratives of religious intolerance, especially in educational institutions. Additionally, the state promotes socio-cultural norms that are perceived as beneficial to the state in terms of maintaining stability. The critical contribution of this article is that, through religious moderation policies, the state has managed to mitigate the political impact of intolerance; however, this approach tends to be formalistic and ceremonial.

Abstract

The concepts of Islamic education and da’wah have garnered significant scholarly interest; however, most prior research remains theoretical, lacking a detailed examination of how Islamic universities operationalize curricula to cultivate future da’wah leaders. This study fills that gap by investigating how Muhammadiyah Higher Education (MHE), Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah (PTM), systematically prepares the next generation of da’is or preachers. Employing a qualitative-descriptive methodology, data were collected through document analysis, curriculum review, and semi-structured interviews with academic leaders. The analysis demonstrates that MHE has integrated Muhammadiyah values across its curricula and established a formal collaboration with the Asia Muslim Charity Foundation (AMCF) to strengthen students’ Arabic proficiency and Islamic literacy, competencies essential for da’wah roles. These innovative strategies show how MHE not only provides ideological formation but also technical preparation for da’wah practitioners. This article thus presents a concrete model of how an Islamic educational institution integrates da’wah within its academic structures, making both theoretical and practical contributions to the broader discourse on Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Indonesia has emerged as the world’s second-largest halal market, boasting the largest Muslim population globally. Despite the Minister of Religious Affairs Decree No. 748/2021, which mandates halal certification for all food service providers by 2024, only a small fraction of restaurants have obtained certification. This study explores differences in consumer segmentation between Muslim patrons who choose halal-certified restaurants and those who do not. The study utilized data from 200 respondents in Banyumas Regency. It also employed hierarchical cluster analysis, which involves measuring distances, linking clusters, and identifying the optimal cluster solution, to delineate distinct consumer groups. Two primary categories are recognized among consumers who choose halal-certified restaurants. High-compliance Muslim Consumers exhibit substantial knowledge, awareness, and commitment to halal certification in their food choices. In contrast, Moderate-Identity Consumers recognize the significance of halal certification but do not regard it as a determining factor in their purchasing decisions. This study also identifies three consumer segments among patrons of non-halal-certified restaurants. The largest group, Halal Flexible, consists mainly of consumers who possess high halal awareness but adopt flexible eating choices due to lower–to–middle–income constraints. Low Halal Concern Consumers exhibit moderate awareness, striking a balance between religious considerations and practical needs. Low-Compliance Consumers display minimal halal awareness and negligible interest in halal attributes. This study is significant in providing insight into how these consumer segments illustrate varying orientations toward halal certification, shaped by differences in religious understanding, personal values, contextual factors, and sociodemographic profiles.

Abstract

This article analyzes the Prosperous Justice Party’s (PKS) rejection of Indonesia’s Law Number 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes (TPKS) by examining the Islamic legal reasoning embedded in the legislative process. Using a qualitative legal research design, the study draws on parliamentary records, official party documents, and interviews with key political and religious figures to identify the normative foundations of PKS’s stance. The findings reveal that PKS frames its opposition through the preventive logic of sadd al-dzarī‘ah and selective applications of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, particularly hifz al-nasl and hifz al-‘ird, while giving less emphasis to victim-oriented protection associated with hifz al-nafs. The study argues that PKS’s position constitutes a form of ijtihād siyāsah dustūriyyah, in which Islamic legal principles are negotiated within constitutional legislative structures rather than articulated through traditional juristic authority. This article contributes to Islamic legal scholarship by demonstrating how partisan actors exercise Islamic legal agency within democratic institutions. It also highlights the challenges of balancing moral preservation and rights-based legal reform in a pluralistic legal system.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of blockchain technology and digital cryptocurrency assets has generated significant debate within Islamic finance, particularly regarding their compliance with the objectives of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah. This study critically examines the role of blockchain technology in the protection of wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl) within digital cryptocurrency assets using a maqāṣid-oriented analytical framework. Employing a qualitative normative–conceptual approach grounded in Jasser Auda’s systems theory of maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah, the study analyzes how core blockchain characteristics transparency, cryptographic security, immutability, and distributed ledger architecture contribute to wealth protection while also identifying inherent risks and limitations. The findings indicate that blockchain can support ḥifẓ al-māl by enhancing transaction accountability, safeguarding ownership, and mitigating fraud. However, such contributions are neither inherent nor unconditional, as they depend on governance structures, regulatory alignment, and ethical usage frameworks. The study further distinguishes between blockchain as a neutral technological infrastructure and cryptocurrency as a financial instrument that may generate Shariah concerns due to volatility, gharar, and speculative excess. By articulating this distinction, the research advances a more proportionate and critically grounded maqāṣid-based assessment of blockchain, contributing to contemporary discourse on Islamic digital finance and offering a conceptual foundation for future regulatory and technological development.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the Theory of the Hierarchy of Islamic Legal Norms within the Manhaj Tarjih of Muhammadiyah as an epistemological framework for thematic studies of hadiths related to social justice. Focusing on a case study of the Muhammadiyah Tarjih Council's fatwa regarding responses to greetings from non-Muslims, the research aims to critically reassess the normative foundation and sociocultural context of the fatwa through a hierarchical approach to Islamic legal norms. Utilizing a qualitative library-based method and thematic analysis, the study engages with a range of relevant primary and secondary sources. The findings suggest that the hierarchical model offers a more flexible and contextually grounded interpretation of the hadith, especially when core Islamic values, such as justice (al-ʿadl), public welfare (al-maṣlaḥah), and social harmony, are prioritized. The study recommends a more contextual, inclusive, and dialogical fatwa methodology to enhance social cohesion in multicultural societies and to align Islamic legal thought with contemporary ethical imperatives.

Abstract

Disappointment is one of the most prevalent negative emotions experienced by adolescents and can disrupt psychological well-being if not properly managed. This study aims to develop an integrative Islamic model of emotion regulation based on the Qur’anic concepts of tafakkur (cognitive reappraisal) and tadzakkur (spiritual meaning-making). Employing a qualitative approach, this research employed a literature study method and a thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses containing the expressions "la’allakum tatafakkarun" and "la’allakum tadzakkarun."  Data were examined through classical-to-modern interpretations and connected with contemporary psychological theories, including Gross’s emotion regulation framework, Pargament’s religious coping, and Park’s meaning-making model. The findings demonstrated that tafakkur functions as a rational-reflective process that allows individuals to reinterpret disappointment, while tadzakkur strengthens emotional recovery by reconstructing meaning through divine awareness and remembrance. Both serve as complementary mechanisms for cognitive and spiritual regulation, promoting emotional resilience and holistic well-being in Muslim adolescents. This study provides a conceptual contribution to Islamic Psychology by bridging Qur’anic epistemology and modern psychological theory. It also suggests that the integration of tafakkur and tadzakkur can be applied in character education and spiritually-based counseling interventions to help adolescents manage emotional distress constructively.

Abstract

Since 2010, mosque revitalization has become a strategic priority of Muhammadiyah, emphasizing the integration of religious observance with community-based empowerment. This study examines the Garbage Charity Program (Sedekah Sampah) as a transformative model of mosque-led initiatives that promote belief, worship practices, and civic engagement. Grounded in Social Capital Theory, the research examines how trust, norms, and social networks are fostered through environmentally motivated religious actions. Utilizing a Concurrent Triangulation Design, qualitative data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders, and document analysis, enabling methodological cross-validation. The findings indicated that the program fosters mutual trust and collective responsibility among mosque congregants, while reinforcing Islamic ethical norms related to charity and environmental stewardship. The initiative has gained traction beyond Bantul, with its success replicated in Central and West Java, and it has been recognized both nationally and internationally. It has expanded to include eco-mosque features such as rainwater harvesting and greywater filtration for ablution, promoting sustainability through faith-based frameworks. This convergence of religious values and environmental consciousness generates robust spiritual and social capital. In conclusion, mosque-based empowerment initiatives can significantly contribute to community resilience and sustainable development when anchored in localized religious practices and supported by substantial social capital.

Abstract

The implementation of multicultural Islamic Education in Islamic-based universities often creates its own dynamics, especially for non-Muslim students who are part of an inclusive academic environment. This study aims to describe the response of non-Muslim students to learning Islamic Education in a multicultural context at Muhammadiyah Mataram University. This Islamic campus is open to diversity. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a field research design, this study involved 75 non-Muslim students from seven study programs through a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation in class and campus social spaces, and documentation of curriculum and academic policies. Data validity was maintained with a method triangulation strategy. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's model, which involves the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the responses of non-Muslim students were mixed: some showed appreciation for the inclusive approach and universal values in Islamic Education, while others felt less engaged because the materials were considered too normative and exclusive. Factors such as the lecturer's pedagogical approach, the relevance of the material, and the social dynamics in a multicultural classroom greatly influenced their perceptions. This research recommendation encourages higher education policymakers to strengthen curricula and teaching methods that are dialogical, adaptive, and inclusive, thereby increasing tolerance and fostering peaceful coexistence in multicultural campus environments.

Abstract

Religious moderation has emerged as a central discourse in strengthening social cohesion and countering the rise of exclusivist and radical narratives in Muslim-majority societies. While formal education has been widely explored in this regard, the contribution of nonformal settings such as Islamic pilgrimage guidance institutions remains underexamined. This study investigates how the nonformal religious education practices of KBIH ’Aisyiyah Bantul integrate religious moderation values tolerance, anti-violence, balance, and accommodation of local culture through a framing approach. Drawing on qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, the research highlights the institutional strategies in embedding moderation during Hajj preparation and community-based religious activities. The analysis employs frame theory to uncover how moderation values are articulated, negotiated, and internalized within the educational process. Findings demonstrate that KBIH ’Aisyiyah Bantul frames religious moderation as both a theological imperative and a socio-cultural necessity, aligning with broader efforts in Indonesian Islamic education reform. Moreover, the results reveal that digital learning spaces and e-learning platforms extend the reach of moderation discourse, while pilgrimage experiences situate moderation within global encounters of diversity and communitas. These insights underscore the potential of nonformal education to complement formal curricula in shaping inclusive religious identities. The study’s global relevance lies in showing how localized practices of religious moderation can contribute to international debates on peacebuilding, intercultural dialogue, and resilience against radicalism. Implications are offered for policymakers, educators, and faith-based organizations seeking to foster sustainable models of moderation in religious education worldwide.
