Abstract

Most of the treatments of patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus  (T2DM) who are admitted to the hospital in controlling the blood glucose still concentrated on medication and diet. On the other hand, exercise or activity management, however, gets insufficient consideration. Health professionals, especially nurses, need to be aware that some exercises or activities should be accomplished even for hospitalized patients. The effort to organize physical activity can be achieved by using Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of PMR on reducing the blood glucose levels in patients with T2DM. This research used the quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest approach with control group design. The sampling technique was simple random sampling with 30 samples, 15 in both intervention and control groups. Data collection techniques were performed by measuring the blood glucose levels at that time. The duration of PMR as an intervention was performed for three days on a regular basis. Afterward, we remeasured the blood glucose levels. Data analysis was done by using t-test. The results of data analysis showed that there was a decrease in mean score of blood glucose levels for 63,80 mg/dl in the control group and 80,46 mg/dl in the intervention group. The results showed that PMR was effective in reducing the blood glucose levels of patients with T2DM in the public hospital (p-value = 0.015). The results of this study can be applied by nurses as an alternative intervention in the management of patients with T2DM.

Abstract

Abstract

Abnormal discharge from the vagina and infections of the reproductive tract can be prevented by practicing good menstrual hygiene. The ease by which adolescents are able to access information will affect the level of knowledge adolescents have about menstrual hygiene. This study aimed to determine the differences in levels of knowledge and practices of menstrual hygiene in boarding school students in rural and urban areas, before and after having being given health education using booklet media. This study was quasi experimental research. The research took place at MTs Al Falaah Pandak Bantul representing the rural area and MTs Mu'allimat Yogyakarta representing the urban area between December 2016 and January 2017. Knowledge and practice of menstrual hygiene was measured by a questionnaire. There was no statistically significant difference between knowledge of menstrual hygiene in the boarding schools of both rural and urban groups p=0.473, whereas the difference between hygiene practice regarding menstruation in both groups showed a significant difference p=0.000. There were significant differences in the levels of knowledge and practice of menstruation hygiene between the boarding school students in both the rural areas and urban areas before and after health education using a booklet. A higher mean value was indicated by the boarding school students in urban areas.

Abstract

One important reason why diabetic ulcer fails to heal is an increase of collagen degradation by matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Vibration therapy is one of complementary therapies which can reduce inflammation and improve reepithelialization. However, up to present, there is no study that investigate the effect of vibration on reduction of MMP-9 in diabetic ulcer. Therefore, the effect of vibration on reduction of collagen degradation in diabetic ulcer is still unknown. If vibration can reduce collagen degradation in diabetic ulcer, nurse can recommend patients to apply vibration not only during inflammation and proliferation phase, but also during maturation phase since MMP-9 also contributes to collagen degradation during maturation phase. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vibration on reduction of MMP-9 in diabetic ulcer. Diabetic rats were divided into two groups, vibration and control groups. The intensity of polymorphonuclears cells (PMNs) and fibroblast, collagen appearance, and the presence of positive cells for MMP-9 were compared. Fibroblast, PMNs and collagen appearance were stained with H and E staining, and MMP-9 was stained by immunohistochemistry method. The difference in the intensity of fibroblast and PMNs was analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test. The result showed that the intensity of PMNs was significantly lower, and the intensity of fibroblast was higher in vibration group than in control. Collagen alignment in the vibration group was more organized in a more regular fashion than in control group. The intensity of positive cells for MMP-9 was lower in the vibration group than in control group. This study showed that vibration could reduce MMP-9, therefore it could be concluded that vibration could reduce collagen degradation of diabetic ulcer. This study bring implication in the clinical setting that vibration therapy should also be applied during maturation phase since MMP-9 is also released in the maturation phase.

Abstract

The prevalence of stunting has increased from 35.6% in 2010 to 37.2% in 2013. Children who suffer from stunting are at risk of delay in growth and development. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between stunting and development status of children under 5 years old. The research design was analytical survey with cross sectional approach. The number of sample were 60 children under 5 years old who selected through quota sampling technique. Microtoase stature meter, WHO anthro software and Denver sheet II were used to assess stunting and development status of children. Data was analysed using distribution frequency, chi square, fisher exact test, and Kolmogorov Smirnov. Result showed that there were no significant correlation between stunting and gross motor, fine motor, social and language development (p=0,649; p=1,000; p=1,000 and p=0.998 respectively). In conclusion, there is no relationship between stunting status and child development. However, mothers of children age less than 5 years old who suffers from stunting is suggested to pay attention to the developmental aspect of their children by taking regular screening and providing stimulation.
