Abstract

Sundanese literature is still being written and read today. Its existence is still supported by discussions and studies, festivals, and performances. In its development, Sundanese literature shows its characteristics periodically through writing techniques, style of expression, and the themes it raises. The purpose of writing this article is to describe the existence of Sundanese literature in the last three decades. The method used is phenomenology and narrative research from Creswell by analyzing events and activities related to Sundanese literary life in the last three decades, as well as observations on Sundanese literary life based on literary works written in Sundanese magazines and Sundanese newspapers, in the 1990s until now. The study of drama literature is carried out on performances that are usually performed by Sundanese theater communities. The data obtained shows that the life of Sundanese literature, namely poetry, prose, and drama is still developing when compared to other regional literature in Indonesia. This can be seen from literary activities, literary performances, and literary prizes.

Abstract

Folklore is a reflection of a society from which we can see how the society lives with various aspects of life including women’s images and roles. This study aims to describe (1) the comparison of structure of the two stories; (2) the comparison of the women’s images in the two stories; and (3) the comparison of the women's roles in the two stories. This study used a comparative qualitative descriptive method with comparative literature studies. Comparative literature studies were based on the comparison of the two stories to identify the similarities and differences with the support of the structuralism theory by A. J. Greimas. Besides, to examine the women’s images and roles, this study used feminist literary criticism. The data were folklore that has been documented in a book entitled Ni Anteh Pergi ke Bulan transcribed by Sukardi (2006) and The Bamboo-Cutter’s Tale transcribed by Kawauchi (2000) which was translated by McCarthy. The data were analyzed by describing the data, interpreting the data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicated that the two stories: (1) have differences in terms of the structure of the story; (2) have similarities and differences in women's self-image and social image; and (3) have similarities and differences in the women’s roles. Based on the women’s images and roles presented in the stories, there is a feminist struggle that discourses on gender equality.

Abstract

Verbs dire have a wide range of semantic features. Therefore, there are various verbs that are semantically related to this verb. This results in the probability of using verbs that are not correct to describe a concept, idea, or feeling, hence it will cause ambiguity and error. On the contrary, this study discusses the similarities and differences in semantic features contained in dire verbs with an analysis using Leech's (2004) and Nida's (2015) theory of semantic feature. Verbs with dire meaning are research data obtained from the online dictionary Larousse.fr and analyzed using qualitative methods with literature study. There were 49 verbs with dire meaning which were then grouped according to the same components. It was found that the verbs can be classified as telling, dialogue, reading, ordering, articulating, publishing, informing, responding to words or actions, expressing, and affirming. Sketch engine has helped to find the minimum component and shows the verb usage in context. The difference in the use lies in the several components it contains: how to do audible activities, for example articulating, having dialogue, informing; the urgency of dire action, for instance what is contained in ordering and responding to an action or words, verb objects like fairy tales, imaginary stories, or facts; the contents of the discussion, such as facts, secrets, ideas, and thoughts; the way of expressing that is specific, detailed, and precise.

Abstract

This article discusses the results of research on the structure of texts and ideologies contained in online news discourse with the theme of the election of the Governor of DKI Jakarta. The method used in this qualitative research is descriptive analytical method. The data sources are ten news discourses published by Kompas.com, Merdeka.com, and VIVAnews.com media in March and April 2017. The data were analyzed for text structure using van Dijk's theory of critical discourse analysis. The results show that the macro structure formed by journalists in news discourse with the theme of the election of the Governor of DKI Jakarta generally uses a frontal theme and tries to convince readers of what they write. The superstructure shows that journalists have provided systematic information according to their respective ideologies. The microstructure generally displays news content that influences public opinion, generates support, strengthens legitimacy, and eliminates opponents. The ideological representations contained in news discourse generally describe the legitimacy process of the dominant group against the minority group.

Abstract

One of the salient problems in translation arises when it comes to translation of cultural words or terms as each language may have its own set of terms. Therefore, this research deals with the orientation in translating culture-specific items from the source language to the target language. The research approach employed in this paper is descriptive qualitative. The data on culture-specific items are obtained based on Newmark’s (1988) categories and translation procedures. The obtained results indicate that the most frequently found CSI category in the data is material culture. Then, the prevailing translation procedures used to render cultural words in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk’s novel were transference, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, recognized translation, componential analysis, reduction, couplets, notes and glosses. From the translation procedures conducted by translator, the orientation can be implied. The theory of translation orientation proposed by Venuti (1995) was followed. The analysis has revealed that the functional equivalent descriptive equivalent, cultural equivalent, component analysis, recognized translation, reduction, and glossary procedures are the most commonly used procedures. Thus, it implies that the translation of Indonesian CSIs in RDP into the target text orientates toward TL or domestication.

Abstract

Qashidah burdah is rich in linguistic style and content, however it is regrettable that many readers simply read without experiencing the beauty of language and the depth of meaning. Stylistic analysis may be used to examine the usage of linguistic style in literature and its consequences for meaning. The goal of this research is to define the components that influence the stylistics and linguistic style of qashidah burdah. To accomplish this purpose, a form of qualitative study using a content analysis technique was applied. According to the findings of the phonological analysis of qashidah burdah chapters 9 and 10, sawamit (consonant), sawait (vowel), and qafiyah (verse) were evaluated from a phonological aspect; As for the lexical aspect, there are 7 pairs of words at-Taraduf (synonyms) and a pair of adh-Dhiddhu (antonyms); From the grammatical aspect there is taqdim ta'khir and from the morphological aspect there is Ikhtiyar al-Sighah, al-'Uduul bi al-Sighah 'an al-Asl al-Siyaqi, Al-idmar fi maudi', and al-Izdiwaajiyah; from the aspect of language style there are assonance, alliteration, anastrophe, apostrophe, polysyndeton, ellipsis, and euphemism; and aspect of rhetoric there is simile, metaphor, epithet, synecdoche, irony, and personification..

Abstract

Bali relies on culture as one of its tourism attractions. Therefore, tourism practitioners are demanded to have strategies in translating cultural-specific items. On the other side, although the topic of translation has received considerable amount of interest, strategies of tourism practitioner in translating cultural-specific items is rarely researched. Therefore, this research focuses on strategies executed by tourism practitioners in cultural language translation as well as the aspects that influence the selection of translation strategies. This research involves 74 respondents of tourism practitioners in Bali Indonesia who are asked to translate 28 cultural-specific items in context. The collected data are analyzed by using Baker theories of translation (1992). From the analysis, it is found that loanword or loanword with explanation was used dominantly with 57.77%. The second dominant translation strategy was paraphrasing by using unrelated words with 22.78%. The third dominant translation strategy was using a more general word with 8.49%. Next dominant translation strategy was cultural substitution with 6.61%. The fifth dominant translation strategy was paraphrasing by using related word with 2.41%. Finally, the least dominant translation strategy was negligence or omission with 1.16%. In terms of reasons, communicativeness, guest cognition, cultural awareness, cultural complexity and guest’s personality are found to be the ones which influence the selection of translation strategies.

Abstract

This qualitative case study aims to find out the nature of students and teacher’s motivational teaching strategy developed by Dornyei (2001) in teaching English in the classroom. The subject of this research was 1 English teacher in SMP Darul Qur’an Aceh Besar. The data were collected from observation checklist and its note. The findings of this research showed from the 35 motivational teaching strategies developed by Dornyei (2001), there are a total twenty-two motivational strategies applied by teacher during the observation. In the first stage, namely creating the basic motivational condition, there are seven strategies applied, in the second strategies, namely generating initial motivation, there are five strategies, in the third stage, namely maintaining and protecting motivation there are nine strategies, and the last stage, namely the encouraging positive retrospective self-evaluation, there are one strategy applied by teacher. The result displayed those motivational strategies received assorted reactions from students, positive and negative. Thus, these findings can be a reflection for increasing quality, fixing and developing English teaching strategy based on students’ need so that it can help teacher in boosting students’ motivation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe 1) marginalization and subordination in Kim Ji Young: Born 1982’s film, 2) marginalization and subordination in Kartini’s film, and 3) similarities and differences in Kim Ji Young: Born 1982’s film and Kartini’s film. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative method with a comparative literature review. The approach used in this research is a feminist approach. The data of this research are the speeches of characters and scenes without dialogue in Kim Ji Young: Born 1982’s film and the Kartini’s film which contain forms of marginalization and subordination of women. The data source or object of study in this study is the Kim Ji Young: Born 1982’s film which was produced in 2019 and the Kartini’s film which was produced in 2017. The data collection technique used in this study was the note-taking technique. The process of analyzing the data in this study consisted of three stages. First, classifying the data. Second, interpreting data. Third, conclude the results of data analysis. The results of this study indicate that there are similarities and differences in the forms of marginalization and subordination of women. The similarity in the form of marginalization is in the form of restrictions on women's movement space. The similarity in the form of subordination in the form of the position of women is considered unimportant so that they are subordinated to men.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui perkembangan tata kelola Program Studi Linguistik S3, kurikulum yang digunakan pada prodi itu, dan respons  mahasiswa terhadap mata kuliah interdisiplin di bidang linguistik. Kenny (1995) menegaskan, mata kuliah interdisiplin sangat  penting untuk menghadapi situasi yang semakin kompleks, tidak menentu, dan ambigu, maka studi interdisiplin perlu terus dibinakan kepada para mahasiswa.  Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut digunakan metode Predictive Content Analysis dari  Neuendorf (2002) karena metode itu  bertujuan memprediksi beberapa pengaruh atau akibat dari sejumlah pesan terhadap hal lain. Data dikumpulkan dari profil program studi, kurikulum, dan respon mahasiswa terhadap kajian interdisiplin di bidang linguistik.  Program Studi Linguistik jenjang S3 yang menjadi sumber data adalah prodi yang diselenggarakan oleh 7  Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Badan Hukum (PTN BH) di Indonesia. Hasil analisis data menyimpulkan, tata kelola prodi linguistik pada ke-7 PTN BH cukup baik, sehingga diprediksi mampu menghasilkan lulusan yang menguasai landasan filosofis dan teoretis serta mampu mengimplementasikan pendekatan interdisipliner dalam mengatasi masalah yang berkaitan dengan bahasa. Mereka berpandangan bahwa  studi interdisipliner akan sangat bermanfaat bagi mereka dalam menghadapi tantangan dunia global. Untuk itu, program studi membekali para mahasiswanya dengan beban studi yang berkisar antara 42 – 53 SKS.
