Abstract

The term francophone refers to the French-speaking community around the world, whereas francophone literature is all French-language texts produced by authors originating from francophone countries. This study discusses the exploration of the literary text of the francophones in teaching French as a foreign language in Indonesian context. The method used is the descriptive qualitative literature review approach. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences in French were collected from data sources, which consisted of French language teaching manuals and francophones novels. Data translated directly by researchers and validated by native French speakers. The data are then classified, interpreted, and reviewed according to the context. The results of this study indicate that: through reflection in a pedagogical framework, it can be agreed that the literary text of the francophones, like other literary texts from around the world, is fertile ground for building learners' intercultural competence. From the discussion, it is also known that the text of the francophones has been used in FLE learning in Indonesia although it is not yet optimal, because it is limited by the linguistic competence of the learner and has only been given to classes from middle to the upper level (between levels B1-B2). This study also proves that the literary text of the francophones can be attributed as a potential learning medium to be explored in the language class, but it requires certain competencies from the teacher, adequate preparation, and thorough execution.

Abstract

This research uses Orhan Pamuk’s Snow in order to reveal the tension and oscillation between the East and the West which is represented by Ataturk’s forced modernization on the restriction of veils in schools and public places. Pamuk uses Kars, a small city in Turkey’s border which always coved by snow, to describe this tension. The women are presented as the oppressed who silently end their life as their way to protect their beliefs and tradition as well as the weapon to fight against the oppressor. To dismantle Pamuk’s work that highlights the endless oscillation, I employ the method of library research by presenting the internal struggle experienced by the main characters that are forced to embrace Western tradition. This research deals with two issues namely oscillation and complex desire to imitate the Others experienced by the main characters the as well as the solutions to the predicament that are offered by Pamuk in Snow. This research is also accompanied by Said’s Orientalism and Bhabha’s Postcolonialism that are employed to illuminate the solutions. Additionally, the information on Turkey’s history and socio-politic condition are presented. This research is a way to show how the oscillation can be solved by embracing one culture without leaving the other. Additionally, it is also a tool to raise the readers’ awareness towards the problem on the predicament of the East and West and develop their critical thinking towards the forced modernity by the oppressor.

Critical discourse analysis of a film about marriage which is motivated by the concept of primogeniture becomes an interesting discourse to be studied. This study aims to analyze the concept of marriage from the point of view of the female character in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005) by using the critical discourse analysis method according to Norman Fairclough. This research is an explanatory research with a qualitative approach. The analysis was carried out through three stages, namely microstructural, mesostructural, and macrostructural analysis. From the research it was found that the perspective of each female character regarding marriage in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005) is influenced by two main things, namely the character's personal character and the character's living conditions according to the storyline. Jane Austen has the power to convey her ideology regarding primogeniture issues that occurred in society in her time to convey to readers through her novel Pride and Prejudice which director Joe Wright turned it into a film in 2005. Abstract

Non-native English scholars are expected to publish international journals with abstracts written in English. There are a lot of factors that caused the rejection of journal article publication; one of them is disorganized writing styles. Compared to the native English speakers, the issues regarding disorganized writing styles appeared more in the non-native English speakers’ research article since they have different writing styles, cultures, and mother tongues. Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop was held for Indonesian University of Education (UPI) scholars so that it is hoped that there would be an increase in the quality of composing research article abstracts and an increase in the number of international publications from scholars. The purpose of this research is to uncover rhetorical moves and genre of the abstracts, its genre development, as well as the linguistics features used in the abstracts. Thirty abstracts made by fifteen UPI scholars who were also the participants of the Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop were collected as the data for the analysis. Hyland’s (2000) theory was used to analyze each move and step of the abstracts. The results show the occurrence frequency of each move and step, along with the linguistic features used by the academicians; and the development of their abstract writing from before and after the coaching clinic session. The findings serve as a potential reference for those researchers that are concerned in discourse analysis, cross-cultural abstracts, and research publication needs.

Abstract

Being fluent in a foreign language requires many practices. However, Indonesian EFL learners might find it challenging to find a speaking partner to practice with as English is not widely used in the society. Moreover, the outbreak of Covid-19 has restricted people to communicate face to face, thus they seek for alternative modes of communication utilizing technology. This study was conducted in order to provide a detailed account and explanation of how learning English informally through a social media called Discord could be a better alternative to practice speaking English. The study involved two EFL students with different background based on their reason of joining the application. Narrative inquiry was used as the method of the study with data collected from interviews and observations to gather the stories on how they practiced their English in the application. The stories were then retold in a narrative account which then validated by the participants. The result includes a detailed account of the experience of practicing English in informal settings with an explanation of how these experiences reflected on the factors affecting speaking skill and ways to develop the three main aspects of speaking. With the results, Discord application shows the possibility to be an alternative for EFL students in finding a place and partners to practice their speaking.

This is a documentation study by using triangulation technique of analysis covering data reduction, data presentation, and data conclusion. The results show that there are 66 specific dictions and 17 general dictions found in the book. In addition, the analysis of language style is also related to parallelism in which intermittent parallelism has differences in its location which can be found in 11 out of 12 Articles of Raja Ali Haji’s Gurindam Dua Belas. Whereas, rarely used parallelism, the repetition of syllables or phrases at the same positions is only found in 1 out of 12 Articles. Finally, the analysis of language style is correlated to the largest figures of speech which is 44 metaphorical figures, while the smallest is 5 sinekdoke figures. In conclusion, language style is an effective means of providing teaching guidance by showing the beauty of literary works. This signifies the importance of language styles as a means of expressing messages depicted from Raja Ali Haji’s Gurindam Dua Belas.
