Abstract

Indonesian people like to consume a number of raw vegetables, one of which is cabbage. Even though it has been washed clean, raw cabbage is still at risk of containing STH eggs and transmitting worms. This study aimed to determine STH egg contamination in raw cabbage, used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 30 cabbage samples were taken randomly from 10 sellers at the traditional market. Samples were analyzed using the sedimentation method and STH eggs were identified under a microscope. All cabbage vegetables in the market were placed on the table, which indicates fairly good hygiene practices. However, one in 30 samples (3.33%) was contaminated with Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. These findings highlight the importance of improving vegetables hygiene and public awareness regarding cooked consumption.

Abstract

Soursop plant is one of the herbal plants used by the community to overcome various diseases. Soursop plant utilization is widely used for the leaves only. One of the benefits of soursop leaves is to reduce blood glucose levels. This is because soursop leaves contain flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloid compounds. Flavonoid compounds have hypoglycemic effects and act like insulin. Tannin compounds can activate enzymes to facilitate glucose entry into cells and alkaloid compounds can regenerate pancreatic beta cells. This study aims to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of soursop leaf extract on rats that have been induced by alloxan. This study is a pretest-posttest experimental study with control group design. The study was conducted on white male Wistar rats given soursop leaf extract at a dose of 400mg/KgBW and 800mg/KgBW for 5 days. The analysis test used was One-Way ANOVA. From the research conducted shows that there is a significant relationship between the administration of soursop leaf extract on fasting blood glucose levels in the intervention group with the administration of soursop leaf extract at a dose of 400mg/KgBW and 800mg/KgBW with a value of p = 0.000 in rats induced alloxan with the mean difference in fasting blood glucose levels in the K + group with P1 and P2 is 61.143mg/dL and 82.000mg/dL.

Abstract

One of the main complications in patients with COPD is muscle weakness or atrophy, which becomes more pronounced during exacerbations, leading to a decline in quality of life, prognosis, and an increased risk of future exacerbations. This study compared upper limb muscle strength between stable COPD patients and those experiencing exacerbations. A cross-sectional study design was used, with an independent sample t-test to compare the mean values of two unpaired groups. Sampling was conducted using a non-probability consecutive sampling technique. Researchers assessed upper limb muscle strength using a Hand-grip Dynamometer on a predetermined sample size that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed a significant correlation between the history of exacerbations within the past year and COPD in both groups (p < 0.05). Upper limb muscle strength in the exacerbation group was lower than in the stable COPD group. The independent t-test yielded a p-value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference in upper limb muscle strength between the stable and exacerbation COPD groups.

Abstract

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common chronic complications in diabetes mellitus patients and can significantly impair quality of life. Early diagnosis is essential, but limited availability of diagnostic tools such as electrophysiological testing in many healthcare facilities calls for more practical and efficient alternatives. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of three clinical scoring systems—NSS (Neuropathy Symptom Score), NDS (Neuropathy Disability Score), and TCSS (Toronto Clinical Scoring System)—in detecting diabetic neuropathy among Type 2 DM patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. A cross-sectional design was employed, and findings revealed that TCSS had the highest accuracy (90.3%) compared to NDS (85.5%) and NSS (85.4%). TCSS also demonstrated the best balance of sensitivity (95.4%) and specificity (77.8%). All three instruments can serve as effective early screening tools, especially in healthcare settings with limited access to electrophysiological diagnostic facilities.

Abstract

Anxiety is a common psychological disorder among medical students, marked by chronic apprehension and physiological manifestations including muscle tension, perspiration, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may hinder cognitive performance, academic achievement, and overall psychological resilience, potentially affecting the future proficiency of medical professionals. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in reducing anxiety symptoms among medical students. An experimental research design was used, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest approach, involving eight participants who met the established inclusion criteria. The intervention consists of eight weekly MBCT sessions, each lasting 90 to 120 minutes. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) before and after the intervention. HARS scores indicated a statistically significant reduction in anxiety level following the MBCT intervention (Z = –2.111ᵇ, p = 0.035). These findings suggest that MBCT serves as an effective therapeutic approach for reducing anxiety among medical students in higher education settings.

Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique to reduce post-operative pain and speed the recovery process. This was further demonstrated using the case of a 45-year-old man with right upper abdominal pain due to a 1.5 cm gallstone after being diagnosed via ultrasonography. The results showed that the gallstones were successfully removed via laparoscopic surgery without significant complications. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has advantages over open surgery, because the patient's postoperative pain is lighter, recovery occurs more quickly, and the hospital stay is shorter. This technique has been proven to be effective and safer for patients without significant complications.

Abstract

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. BPA is classified as an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that can cause various adverse effects on human health. Biomonitoring studies in the United States, Germany, and Canada have shown that over 90% of the population have detectable levels of BPA in urine samples. This indicates widespread and sustained exposure in the general population. Furthermore, these findings underscore the importance of implementing preventive measures to mitigate the long-term health risks associated with BPA exposure. This article aims to review the literature on various preventive strategies to reduce health risks associated with BPA exposure. The method employed is a literature review, drawing references from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases, encompassing publications from 2020 to 2025. The study results indicate that preventive measures can be implemented through public education, strengthening regulations and policies, promoting lifestyle changes, and utilising antioxidants. Effective prevention requires cross-sectoral collaboration involving individual actions, strong public policies, continuous education, and an integrated scientific approach to create a safer and healthier environment free from BPA hazards.

Abstract

Tuberculous cervicitis is a rare form of genital tuberculosis that often mimics cervical cancer due to similar symptoms, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding and vaginal discharge. Early detection is crucial to prevent misdiagnosis and mistreatment. A 37-year-old woman presented with six months of vaginal bleeding, postcoital bleeding, and recent  vaginal discharge. Physical examination revealed an irregular cervical lesion, but laboratory and imaging findings were inconclusive. A conization biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with caseous necrosis, confirming tuberculous cervicitis. Acid-fast bacillus staining was negative. The patient was treated with standard antituberculous regimen, resulting in symptom resolution and clinical impprovement. Tuberculous cervicitis is often missed due to its rarity and malignancy-like symptoms. Diagnosis relies on histopathology, as microbiological confirmation is difficult. Prompt antituberculous treatment prevents serious complications. Surgical intervention may be necessary for both diagnosis and treatment.  Conclusion: Tuberculous cervicitis should be considered in cases of chronic cervicitis, especially in endemic areas. Timely diagnosis and treatment promote a good prognosis and prevent unnecessary invasive procedures.

Abstract

Spousal social support, marital satisfaction, and perfectionism can be causes of depression in mothers. This study analyzes the relationship between spousal social support, perfectionism, and marital satisfaction with the occurrence of depression in mothers after childbirth. The cross-sectional study design used 60 postpartum mothers as samples, collected over two months (April–May) using accidental sampling techniques. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square test with SPSS Statistics V26. The results showed that 30% of the mothers were aged 20–25 years, 41.7% had a history of one childbirth, 86.7% were housewives, and mothers married for over 10 years (28.3%), and normal delivery (49.4%). The results of the bivariate analysis using the chi-square test showed that spousal social support (0.002), marital satisfaction (0.013), and perfectionism (0.000) were associated with the occurrence of depression in mothers (<0.05). It can be concluded that there is a relationship between spousal social support, perfectionism, marital satisfaction, and the occurrence of postpartum depression in mothers.

Abstract

Pneumonia is an acute lung infection that often affects toddlers and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Routine immunization is an important preventive measure. This study aims to analyze the relationship between immunization status and morbidity and mortality of toddlers with severe pneumonia in the PICU of Dr. Moewardi Regional Hospital. The retrospective cross-sectional analytical study design used medical record data and the Menuju Sehat Card in 34 toddlers. Immunization status was considered complete if appropriate for age. Morbidity was seen from the length of hospitalization, mortality from the status of alive/dead. Analysis used chi-square/Fisher and logistic regression. The results showed that 90% of toddlers with complete immunization were hospitalized for <10 days, while 82.6% with incomplete immunization were hospitalized for ≥10 days (p<0.001). Mortality was higher with incomplete immunization (90.0%) than with complete immunization (45.8%) (p=0.024). DPT3 and smallpox immunization were associated with morbidity, while polio and smallpox were associated with mortality. Conclusion: Basic immunization is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality in severe pneumonia in toddlers after controlling for age, exclusive breastfeeding, and cigarette smoke exposure.
