Abstract

Leukocyte count is one of the hematological parameters known to help diagnose organ damage and serve as an indicator of the body's immune system. Leukocyte counts are associated with the extent of lesions in the lung fields of tuberculosis patients on Chest X-ray (CXR) examination. This study aims to evaluate whether the leukocyte count can be used as an alternative indicator for early detection and severity assessment of tuberculosis without relying on CXR results. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim to determine the relationship between leukocyte count and TB lesion area from Chest X-ray (CXR) examination. This study is a quantitative research type of observational analysis with a cross sectional study design conducted on 60 research subjects derived from medical record data of TB patients at Saiful Anwar Hospital, Malang, from January 2022 to December 2023. The data obtained were analyzed using the Chi-Square method, which showed that there was no significant relationship between leukocyte count and the extent of TB lesions from the CXR examination (Chi-Square, p=0.706). The conclusion of this study is that leukocyte count is not associated with the description of the lesion area of TB patients.

Abstract

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin—the most potent anti-TB drugs. Prolonged treatment duration and complex drug regimens often lead to poor adherence, contributing to high MDR TB incidence and low treatment success rates, particularly in Indonesia. This study analyzed drug utilization patterns in 52 MDR TB patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, using total sampling based on medical records from October 2018 to December 2019. Data were analyzed descriptively with SPSS v25. The most common side effects reported were weakness, nausea, and vomiting (84.6%), followed by arthralgia, hyperuricemia, and hearing loss (42.3%). Severe side effects were more prevalent in the short-term regimen group (40.4%) compared to the long-term group (7.7%). Weakness, nausea, and vomiting were the most frequently observed side effects in MDR TB patients.

Abstract

Intestinal parasitic infections remain a health problem in communities. Surveys of intestinal protozoan infections in Lampung Province are limited. The transmission of intestinal protozoan infections is generally through the oro-faecal route, which is related to environmental and behavioral factors. Farmers are one of the communities that are potentially infected. Gisting Sub District is one of the agricultural centers in Lampung Province. Farmers' contact with the environment will increase the risk of intestinal protozoan infection. This study aims to determine the Species of intestinal parasites found in farming communities. The design of this study is a descriptive observational survey. Feces collected were examined for parasitological examination at the Parasitology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. The results showed, the prevalence is 9.33%, consisting of Blastocystis sp. protozoa (6.67%), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar protozoa (1.33%), and a mixture of Blastocystis sp. and Endolimax nana (1.33%) among the research subjects.

Abstract

Hypertension is a global health issue, particularly among the elderly, and can be influenced by psychological factors such as depression. This study investigated the relationship between depression and hypertension among the elderly in the SELANTANG community, Pasuruan City. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, the research involved 175 elderly participants from a total population of 240. Data were collected in August 2023 using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and blood pressure measurements. Results showed that most participants had isolated systolic hypertension, with an average systolic pressure of 142.58 mmHg and diastolic pressure of 83.00 mmHg. Despite a normal average depression score of 2, Spearman’s rank analysis indicated no significant correlation between depression levels and hypertension (p = 0.885 and p = 0.901). These findings suggest that hypertension management in the elderly should prioritize factors such as diet, lifestyle, and physical activity.

Abstract

The upper canine teeth exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making them frequently used in gender identification in forensic odontology. The measurement of the inter-canine width can be performed using conventional methods, such as a digital caliper, or modern methods using an intraoral scanner. The intraoral scanner offers higher accuracy and easier data storage; however, no studies have compared the inter-canine width of the upper jaw using both methods. This study measured the inter-canine width of the upper jaw on 80 jaw models using both instruments, with each measurement performed three times per instrument. The measurement results were analyzed using SPSS, with Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for agreement, Kolmogorov-Smirnov for normality, and Independent T-test for significance. The ICC results showed good agreement (0.892), and the Independent T-test revealed no significant difference (p = 0.598). It can be concluded that there is no significant difference between the measurement of the upper inter-canine width using the intraoral scanner and the digital caliper.

Abstract

Free radicals are molecules with one or more unpaired electrons, which makes them very labile and reactive. They are important in tissue damage and pathological processes in living organisms. Endogenous sources of free radicals are metabolic waste, such as combustion processes in the body, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that we consume, and exogenous ones that come from air pollution, vehicle exhaust, and various chemicals and ultraviolet rays. 1, 2 An increase in free radicals can cause oxidative stress, resulting in oxidative damage from the cellular tissue to organ levels that will accelerate aging and cause various disease pathogenesis. 3 To reduce the impact of oxidative stress, adequate antioxidants are needed, which can be obtained from the body through enzymes or natural antioxidant intake. 4 One source of natural antioxidants comes from the leaves of purple sweet potato plants (Ipomea batatas L), which contain chemical compounds such as beta-carotene, bioflavonoids, catechins, and polyphenols that can ward off free radicals, improve oxidative stress conditions so that they are beneficial for maintaining health.

Abstract

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively throughout the body due to structural and functional impairments. It is a serious complication of hypertension, which can affect the heart's electrical activity and lead to abnormalities on electrocardiograms (ECG). This study aimed to determine the relationship between a history of hypertension and ECG abnormalities in chronic heart failure patients. This study used a cross-sectional study design, using primary data from ECG recordings, and ECG recording results interpreted by one expert. The study population included all chronic heart failure patients at the Cardiology Clinic of Muhammadiyah Palembang Hospital who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 30 samples were analyzed. Among the patients, 25 (83,3%) had a history of hypertension. The results of the Fisher Exact Test statistical test between history of hypertension and abnormal ECG images obtained a value of p = 0,622 (p > 0.05). These findings indicate no association between a history of hypertension with ECG ischemic in chronic heart failure patients.
