Abstract

In Indonesia, the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infection ranges from 2.5% to 62%, primarily affecting lower socioeconomic groups with poor sanitation. STH transmission can occur through fecal-oral routes, skin penetration of larvae, and mechanical vectors. This study examines STH egg contamination in flies at the Sukawinatan Landfill, Palembang, to understand their role in transmission and support vector control strategies. The research employs a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. Observations were conducted microscopically with sample processed using the sedimentation technique. From 59 samples prepared from 598 flies, 17 samples (28.8%) were confirmed positive for STH eggs. The total number and type of STH eggs found were 24 Trichuris trichiura eggs. In conclusion, STH egg contamination was detected on flies at the Sukawinatan Landfill in Palembang City.

Abstract

Deadlift is a resistance training exercise commonly used to enhance muscle strength, but improper technique can increase the risk of musculoskeletal pain. This study aimed to analyze the distribution and intensity of musculoskeletal pain in recreational deadlift users using a cross-sectional design. A total of 42 respondents from two gym communities in Palembang were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that 48.9% of respondents had poor posture during deadlift, and the majority (66.7%) lifted heavy loads (≥70% of 1RM). Musculoskeletal pain was most frequently reported in the lower back (85.3%), followed by the glutes (8.8%) and the right shoulder (5.9%). Most respondents experienced mild pain (37.8%) or no pain at all (37.8%), while moderate pain was reported by 24.4% of respondents. No cases of severe pain were recorded. These findings indicate that although deadlift can cause musculoskeletal discomfort, the pain intensity is generally tolerable.

Abstract

High grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) of the ovary is the dominant subtype causing death from ovarian cancer. CCNE1 amplification occurs in 20% of ovarian HGSC and is associated with recurrence after platinum chemotherapy. Assessment of CCNE1 expression can be a screening for CCNE1 amplification. Measurement of CA-125 levels is routinely used for treatment monitoring and recurrence of HGSC patients. This study aims to assess CCNE1 expression, demographic characteristics and CA-125 levels of ovarian HGSC patients. Of the 31 HGSC patients, the study subjects were dominated by patients aged >50 years (61.3%), clinical stage FIGO III (64.5%), CCNE1 overexpression (71%), preoperative CA-125 levels ≥500 U/ml (77.4%) and postchemotherapy CA-125 levels <35 U/ml (58.1%).

Abstract

Maternal mortality is a key indicator of healthcare quality, reflecting disparities in access to care and the effectiveness of maternal health interventions. In South Ogan Komering Ulu, the maternal mortality rate has shown a concerning upward trend between 2019 and 2023. This study aims to identify the primary risk factors associated with maternal deaths at Muaradua Hospital and to provide practical recommendations for prevention. Researchers performed a descriptive cross-sectional analysis utilizing hospital records encompassing demographic, clinical, and socio-economic characteristics. A total of 13 maternal deaths were recorded during the study period. Hemorrhage emerged as the leading cause of death, followed by hypertension in pregnancy, infection, and other causes such as anesthetic complications, cardiac conditions, and respiratory disorders. Most deaths occurred during the post-partum period, particularly among women aged 20–33 and those in their first pregnancy. In conclusion, hemorrhage, hypertension, and post-partum complications were the main contributors to maternal mortality in this setting. Preventive efforts should focus on improving the quality of antenatal care services, ensuring the presence of skilled healthcare providers during childbirth, and strengthening the referral system to ensure timely and appropriate care.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a condition of increased uric acid levels in the blood that can trigger gout and other metabolic disorders. Conventional therapies such as allopurinol are effective, but have side effects, so safer natural alternatives are needed. Arcangelisia flava, a traditional medicinal plant, is known to contain bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. This study aims to evaluate the anti-hyperuricemic effect of ethanol extract of A. flava stems in vivo in potassium oxonate-induced rats. Rats were divided into control groups, hyperuricemia models, and treatments with extract doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW. Uric acid levels were measured enzymatically before and after treatment. The results showed that A. flava extract significantly reduced uric acid levels (p=0.000), especially at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW which reduced uric acid levels by 74.17%. These findings support the potential of A. flava as a natural anti-hyperuricemic agent.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents the most common type of injury globally and can lead to death or permanent disability in children. In Indonesia, most existing studies have concentrated on adult TBI cases. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with mortality in pediatric patients with traumatic brain injury. This research employed an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the medical records of pediatric patients aged 1–18 years diagnosed with TBI and admitted to the PICU of RSUD Dr. Moewardi between January and December 2023. A total of 40 patients were included. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Chi-square or Fisher's Exact test and logistic regression via SPSS. Mortality occurred in 25% of the patients (10 out of 40). Bivariate analysis indicated that a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score ≤8 (OR = 36; 95% CI = 3.79–342.02; p < 0.001) and abnormal pupillary response (OR = 7.99; 95% CI = 2.73–84.18; p = 0.047) were significantly associated with mortality. Multivariate analysis identified a GCS score ≤8 as the most significant risk factor (OR = 22.87; 95% CI = 2.15–243.20; p = 0.009), followed by abnormal pupillary response (OR = 7.99; 95% CI = 2.73–84.18; p = 0.047). In conclusion, a GCS score ≤8 and abnormal pupillary response are significant risk factors for mortality in pediatric TBI patients admitted to the PICU of RSUD Dr. Moewardi.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the prevalence of migraine and the level of resilience and quality of life in final-year medical students. This descriptive observational study was conducted on final-year medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra, from November 29, 2023, to December 20, 2023. The results showed that the prevalence of migraine was 16.2%, with 72.4% experiencing mild migraine and 27.6% experiencing severe migraine. Among students with mild migraine, 57% had moderate resilience, and 61.9% reported a good quality of life. Of students with severe migraine, 63% had moderate resilience, and 62.5% reported a good quality of life. These findings indicate that medical students in this study generally have good quality of life and moderate resilience, regardless of migraine severity. This indicates the possibility of adaptive coping mechanisms. However, the small sample size, especially in the severe migraine group (n=8), suggests the need for further research with a larger population to validate these results.
