Abstract

The main objective of this research is to design a syllabus and adapt materials on the basis of  Students’ needs. In order to achieve this objective, needs analysis of the students was carried out in advance.  The research was conducted in Makassar by employing pre-ESP and post-ESP students as the source of primary data. As The source of supporting data, the researcher distributed questionnaire to graduates, ESP teachers, Head of Departments and graduates’ employers/users. To effectively achieve the objective of the research, the researcher conducted a survey by distributing questionnaire and document study to collect relevant data. The data which had been collected were then tabulated and analyzed by using descriptive method. The results of the research indicate that conducting needs analysis prior to any ESP course is absolutely important as the basis for syllabus design and material adaptation, because there was no material available on the market that could fully fit the students’ needs. The results of the target situation analysis also indicates that the main purpose of the students of Economic Faculty , Universitas “45” Makassar in learning ESP is to enable them to read and understand books related to economics written in English that are available in libraries. Based on this fact the researcher tried to design a syllabus that integrated reading skills, vocabulary acquisition and mastery on English grammar. Further, the materials were arranged based on the students’ topic of interest/priority.

Abstract

Learning English is not an easy task for our students.  It might because English itself is not practiced as second language, but more to target language.  Then it is only learned in certain situation like in school. That it is not easy is also probably because Bahasa Indonesia has different pattern of composing predicate. There are five types of basic sentences or simple sentences in Bahasa Indonesia based on their predicates in “Tata Bahasa Baku Bahasa Indonesia”.  The first type is sentence which is predicated by verb (ibumengajarbahasaInggris). The second type is predicated by adjective (ayahnyasakit). The third type is predicated by noun (dia guru saya). Further, the fourth one is predicated by number (rumahnyaduabuah). The last one is predicated by preposition (diakepasar). When making English sentences, it is common to find that students tends to translate purely from Bahasa Indonesia pattern.  Example, *his father sick, *his house two, and *I school.  These sentences are reflection of those former types of basic sentences in Bahasa Indonesia. It is what we call language interference and it is unavoidable. Instead of blocking this interference, it is better to find a similarity between two languagesEnglish has one type of predicate. This predicate is always verb, while in Bahasa Indonesia it can be in the form of noun, adjective, number, and preposition.  It is impossible to adjust English to Indonesian rules. However, it is probably possible to modify Indonesian rule to English rule for the sake of making students easier to learn English.  This paper proposes that all predicates in Bahasa Indonesia can be simplified into verb. Example, ayahnyasakit (ayahnyasedangsakit), dia guru saya (diaadalah guru saya), rumahnyaduabuah (rumahnyaberjumlahduabuah), diakepasar (diapergikepasar).By simplifying the five types of predicates in Bahasa Indonesia into one type of predicate, it is expected that interference from Bahasa Indonesia does not digress the English sentences made by students from the exact regulation.

Abstract

Listening is prerequisite for oral proficiency and is recognized as fundamental skills. Through listening, students can build an awareness of the language systems and establish more fluent productive skills.  This research is generally aimed to help the students of English improve their listening skills and develop their awareness on distinctive sounds which are not native to their mother tongue, as well as to help language teachers in designing the effective lesson plans for the listening courses. This study on the role of phonetics in language teaching is highly expected to develop better understanding in the target language and encourage native-like English pronunciation for Indonesian students. The findings showed that the students found difficulties in listening and pronouncing distinctive segments namely: /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /θ/, /ð/; long vowels /i:/, /a:/, /ɔ:/, /u:/, /3ː/;  diphthongs /eI/, /әʊ/, /Iә/, /eә/, /ʊә/; and final clusters. The use of articulatory phonetics was proven to be effective in raising the students’ awareness in producing English sounds which differ in place and manner of articulation. It could be seen from the post-test results in which there were fewer students who made mistakes in listening and pronouncing distinctive sounds. The audio-lingual method was appropriate to the teaching of the aural skill as it employed listening-imitation-practice-production to teach English pronunciation.

Abstract

This research paper was mainly focused on writing skill development amongst Thai second language learners. Many Thai English learners tend to concentrate on building examination skill; however, the four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are not focused. For many learners, writing is considered the hardest productive skill to acquire the Standard English writing. This research paper aims to introduce alternative pedagogical technique inspired by George Kelly’s theory exploring humans’ cognitive learning in simplified manners. This alternative technique proposed in this research is originally derived from the mathematical foundation to enhance writing skill; therefore, the name ‘Language Equation (LE)’ will be used in this paper to refer to the technique. The experiment was conducted to compare results between the subjects’ pre-writing and post-writing test after learning LE within 36 hours.  As a result, the subjects became more confident in writing and producing comprehensible stories with correct grammar.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the pattern of S1 PGSD-UT students' learning readiness at two UT’s regional offices.  The results of the study were intended to develope  the guidelines of the Strata 1- basic education teacher Program at Universitas Terbuka (UT). The research was carried out in the islands of Kepulauan Seribu which managed by UT’s regional office in Jakarta  and the islands of Tidore which managed by UT’s regional office in Ternate. The data were collected using questionnaires to 200 basic education student-respondents and direct interviews to 27 student-respondents who registered in the first semester of 2010. The number of 174 questionnaires were analyzed. The results of the study showed that, first, about 92% of Strata 1-students of the basic education teacher program were elementary school teachers. Second, they lived in small islands and tended to face various obstacles to fully participate in learning activities which could influence on their success in their study completion. Third, about 48 % of the them dealed with infrastructure and facility limitations. Fourth, geographical, weather/natural,  economic, and  transportation conditions were possible  to  affect their learning readiness to fully involve in learning process. These conditons might increase student drop out and prohibit student completion in the proper time. Fifth, students’ confidence tended increase when they performed more self learning and had opportunity  to get more access to learning resource facilities. The student could be more success in learning by involving lecturers/tutors and facilitating communication media through an integrated mobile learning.

Abstract

This article discusses the use of multimedia for receptive and pruductive second and forreign language development. The theoretical bases use for the application of multimedia in second language teaching is on the basis of comprehensible input and comprehensible output, two terms which have been discussed and analyzed in second language acquisition research for the last two decades.Use of multimedia in this article is on two types of language skills: receptive and productive skills covering the four language skills listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Practical examples of the use of multimedia is directed toward using it by learners and by teachers as learning faciltators. A wide range of internet use for university students is given in a more detailed perspective.Key words: multimedia, receptive skills, productive skills, internet, comprehensible input and comprehensible output.

Abstract

Physical Education (PE) is critical to the development and maintenance of good health in students’ life. Therefore, Physical Fitness Components (PFC) that is trained through Physical Fitness Test (PFT) must be applied in the PE class because it leads and encourages students to live a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, the students in grade XI SMA ABC Tangerang, did not learn PFC and PFT. When it was time for PE class, the students also had low motivation to participate. This research is a quasi-experimental research that compared two groups of subjects:XI IPA boys (experimental group) and XI IPS boys (control group). The research was conducted in two meetings. The motivation has been measured by using questionnaire with high reliability (r=0.725) and in very high reliability (r=0,952). After tested the questionnaire result with t-test for independent samples, the result has showed that there is significant difference of motivation between the experimental group and the control group (p=0,000, p<0,05).
