Abstract

In this study, traffic accidents occurred on roads in Batu, East Java, were observed. Based on these traffic accident data, a model was built to relate the number of motorcycle accidents with the availability of road shoulders, traffic flow, and traffic speed. The results indicate that the availability of road shoulders potentially reduce the number of motorcycle accidents. Conversely, increasing the speed and traffic flow potentially increase the number of motorcycle traffic accidents on the roads in Batu. Keywords: motorcycle accidents, road shoulders, traffic flow, traffic speed

Abstract

The most common daily trip for students is the commute to and from campus. Students tend to choose car when commuting. This preference has resulted in a number of negative effects. Therefore it is necessary to investigate the psychological factors influencing students’ car use behavior. The popular theory of plannedbehavior (TPB) was successfully applied by different authors to explain people’s travel mode choices.According to TPB, intentions are the closest antecedents of behavior, and intentions were resulted fromattitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. TPB assumes that these components are in turndetermined by salient beliefs for each component and evaluations of those beliefs. This study elicit students’salient beliefs in relation to car commuting, that could be used to construct a full TPB questionnaire. Thisquestionnaire could then be used to investigate student car commuting behavioural intention. A sample ofstudents from four different university, with a sample size of 200 people, completed questionnaires with eightopen-ended questions eliciting beliefs concerning car use. The results indicated that the most frequentlymentioned salient beliefs related to behavioral beliefs are comfort, security, flexibility, prestige, parkingfacilities, congestion, and travel cost. Meanwhile, those related to normative beliefs are parents,boyfriend/girlfriend, and friend, and those related to control beliefs are parents, car availability, number ofcar owned, car’s technical problem, congestion, and travel cost. Keywords: theory of planned behavior, student’s salient beliefs, car use for commuting.

Abstract

The determination of bus service frequency using cost-benefit approach is presented in this paper. This study was conducted in Malaysia where bus operators could provide feasible bus services using this method. The investment costs include all costs for vehicle, human resources, workshop, operational facilities, andsupporting facilities while the benefits are expected from ticket fare collected and fuel subsidy. The primary data consists of passenger number, ticket fare, travel time, number of vehicles, and route length. The secondary data, provided by bus operators, include vehicle investment and operation and maintenance costs. The results indicate that this method is applicable and can be used by bus operators to provide feasible bus services with adequate frequencies. Keywords: cost-benefit analysis, bus service, service frequency.

Abstract

Pedestrians have a weak position when mixed with vehicular traffic . Therefore, it required facilities for pedestrians , which can be a pedestrian corridor. In reality, it is often found that the pedestrian corridors are improperly used, when the carridor is used for trading places resulting reduced spaces for pedestrians. All of these in turn reduces the level of service for pedestrians. This study was conducted in the market area of Jalan Kahayan, Cilik Riwut, in the City of Palangkaraya. Observations were made at the peak and at the normal time. The level of service is measured based on the concept of Level of Service described in the US Highway Capacity Manual 1994. The results of this study are expected to be used as a reference material for designing pedestrian facilities which are not at present available in the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual . The results indicate that the level of service in the pedestrian corridor of Pasar Kahayan is D in peak condition, C in normal conditions, and D in a combined time conditions .

Abstract

Fatality level can be reduced with the deficiency safety program as an effort in handling the accident thatoccurred on the road. This study aims to investigate the influence of the road infrastructure condition and toassess the best solution to minimize the probability of the accident. The parameter used to determine thelocation of the study was based on AEK’s value, fatality’s level, and accident frequency. This study wascarried out in the black spot at Yogyakarta – Wonosari road, that were: (1) Bunder (KM 10+944 m); (2)Pekerjaan Umumtat (KM 7+864 m); and (3) Patuk (KM 0+874 m). This analysis was perfomed using the IKJwith measuring design deviation (geometric and road’s facilities harmonization) toward technical standard.Infrastructure improvements should be conducted to conform components based on the risk analysis.Handling priority of deficiency road infrastructure in the black spot should be based on: (1) traffic handling;(2) harmonization of fringe and mark; and (3) arrangement of road‘s facilities. Keywords: black spot, deficiency, fatality, IKJ, risk analysis

Abstract

The aircraft traffic activities at the Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar, has been causing noise disturbance on the people who live in the vicinity. This study aims to analyze the condition of the area and landscaping noise barrier protecting Sudiang residential areas, adjacent to the airport. The data were analyzed to produce a concept of handling the problem. The results show that noise barriers located in the Sudiang residential area fall in the low category, with less capability to reduce or solve the noise problem. For this reason, the noise barrier system in Hasanuddin Airport needs to be improved so that people living in the airport area is not disturbed. Keywords: airports, noise, noise barrier.

Abstract

More than 95% of freight movement in the Province of Aceh is done by the road mode. As most of the land in the province is surrounded by sea, the freight movement could have been done by sea transportation. Railway was already in the Province of Aceh long time ago, it began to operate in 1906, but the operation was closed in 1982. The Central Government and the Aceh Provincial Government want to revitalize the railway and there is also a plan to build a new Jalan Raya from Banda Aceh to North Sumatra border. However, there is a constraint in the costs of building these infrastructures so that multimodal and intermodal transportation can not take place. As a result, road transportation remains to be a major transport choice and this condition is even worse with vehicles on the road also tend to carry overload. This study was conducted in connection with the overload effect of the freight transport using trucks and how these trucks cause road deterioration and increase road maintenance costs in the Province of Aceh. The results suggest that multimodal/intermodal freight transportation, specifically road and railroad combined transport, could provide more efficient freight transport and, most likely, is the best option for the province. Keywords: freight transportation, multimodal/intermodal transportation, overload
