Abstract

This study investigated the Foreign Language for Specific Purposes (FLSP) students' anxiety and learning strategies in speaking instruction. To gain insight into FLSP students' speaking anxiety and learning strategies, this study applied a descriptive qualitative research design. A Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were used to collect data from 26 FLSP students for the study. The results were described in percentages and elaborated in the description. The results regarding the students' anxiety revealed that 7 out of 26 students (27%) experienced low anxiety, 17 out of 26 students (65%) encountered moderate anxiety, and 2 (8%) students experienced high anxiety. Furthermore, the results regarding the students' learning strategies showed that strategies such as preparation, practicing before speaking, and positive thinking helped students reduce anxiety in FLSP speaking performance. Implementing the appropriate strategies in FLSP speaking is significant as learning FLSP is more complex than general or academic English as it involves numerous foreign terms.

Abstract

The existence of different languages in a multicultural society is one of the triggering factors for the occurrence of code-switching in both real life and literary works including novels. The objective of this study were to: 1) describe the forms and types of code-switching in Aydan Ahn’s novel “The Shelter”, and 2) describe the author’s intention to negotiate identity through code-switching. The research’s data consisted of a variety of utterances produced by characters that switch between Indonesian and Korean language. The analysis findings revealed that 23 occurrences of code-switching were found in conversations between characters in the novel. Twelve of them were inter-sentential switching, nine were of tag switching, and two were of intra-sentential switching. Speakers aim to accentuate the message the want to convey to their interlocutor, which is why code-switching occurs in the utterances produced by the characters. In addition, speakers also perform code-switching to complete the sentences or clauses they say. Meanwhile, from the writer's point of view, it can be concluded that the author tries to make the story written to be more alive. The code-switching was intended to negotiate the author’s identity through the expressions that expose the author’s cultural background knowledge.

Abstract

Beauty ideals that primarily focus on physical attributes play the role of a cultural milieu in which women are vulnerable to objectification. Such a cultural force gives rise to the importance of investigations on literature, such as films, as a cultural product as well as a cultural shaper in which women are portrayed and represented through their narrative, characters, and more. This study is a qualitative descriptive study on the film I Feel Pretty that applies the feminist theory of objectification. It aims to explore the portrayal of Renee Bennett, the main character, in dealing with objectifying beauty ideals and how such phenomena are challenged in the film. The results found that Renee Bennett experiences objectification by others, self-objectification, and objectifying others under the context of appearance-focused beauty concepts. However, the film challenges such objectifying beauty concepts by introducing alternatives that focus on internal qualities or non-physical attributes, such as self-confidence, intelligence, and health. Thus, the film is a critique towards the existing beauty ideals that glamorize the physique, and it encourages a shift of focus from external to internal qualities that support women’s mobility and well-being.

However, they also struggle to read test texts, comprehend challenging terms and settings, and respond to questions. Additionally, some students lacked confidence and were unfamiliar with the test question styles. This study found that the TOEIC test has a good effect, but also highlights the difficulties that students experience. The recommendations include improving students' comprehension of exam instructions, addressing issues by understanding challenging terms and circumstances, and offering assistance to increase students' confidence. The TOEIC test and more efficient methods of English language instruction were predicted to benefit from the findings of this study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of students' anxiety as well as the elements that contribute to their anxiety when speaking in English. This survey study employed the FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) questionnaire by Horwitz et al. (1986) and interviews. Sixty students were chosen as the sample of the study. The results showed 20% of participants feel very anxious, 42% feel anxious level, 23% feel mild anxious, 8% feel relaxed, 5% feel very relaxed. In the interview, the types of language anxiety indicators were also identified. The results show that fear of negative evaluation and feeling insecure were the major causes of students’ anxiety. This study implied that anxiety could become a driving factor that leads students to be passive and make no effort to speak English in the classroom.  Teachers are encouraged to address students’ anxiety in order to help students overcome their anxiety.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze illocutionary speech acts in speeches on the relocation of the national capital. The relocation of the national capital is a new polemic that raises pros and cons among the public. Some people consider the relocation of the capital city to have less urgency, so there is no need to do that. Leaders have an important role in convincing the public of this view. The use of language by politicians in speeches certainly has another goal, namely to convince the audience or the public. This research uses the theory of speech acts by Searle. Searle classifies illocutionary speech acts into five types. That is a declaration, assertive, expressive, directive, and commissive. The method used is the descriptive method. The results obtained from this study are that there are classifications of speech acts. That is, assertive, commissive, directive, and declarative. The results of this study indicate that these speech acts have a role in speech, one of which is to influence many people with our opinions.
