Abstract

Computer-assisted language Learning (CALL) is a learning method that uses computers as auxiliary media to facilitate language learning. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of research in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in the last five years based on the Scopus database. This quantitative study uses bibliometric analysis with the search keyword Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The results of this study highlight a significant increase in the number of articles about Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) indexed by Scopus every year, starting from 142 articles in 2018 and 2023, which increased to 251. The type of publication is dominated by journal articles, followed by conference papers and reviews, and the rest in the form of books or book chapters. The largest source of publications comes from Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including the subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) with 29 publications. Our comprehensive analysis reveals a significant downward trend in citations from 2018 to 2023. Furthermore, based on the visualization using VOSviewer shows the use of AI technology in language teaching and the impact of digital media on language learning. The results of this study show that it is essential to continue to review and evaluate the factors influencing the dissemination and acceptance of CALL research. Moreover, it is crucial to reinforce the continuity between technological innovation and practical practice in various areas of life, thereby highlighting the real-world impact of CALL research.

Abstract

The role of the media in the 2024 election became a polemic in the community. One of the causes was the differing news of the election in the mass media based on the ideologies adopted by the media. This condition also tended for similar patterns to occur in the elections that would be held in 2024. Various surveys have emerged regarding strong candidates for the position of President of the Republic of Indonesia. This study used a critical discourse analysis research method to uncover the ideological discourse of the 2024 Election Vortex. The research data were digital news that contained a digital media ideological discourse related to the 2024 Election Vortex. The data were sourced from three digital news media with the highest trust index in Indonesia, according to the research results by the Reuters Institute Digital News Report (2023:132). These media were Kompas.com (69%), CNN.com (68%), and liputan6.com (64%). The concept of Critical Discourse applied in this study was Theo van Leeuwen's framework for analyzing actors and social actions. The results showed that the three digital dailies with the highest level of trust in Indonesia, kompas.com, cnnindonesia.com, and liputan6.com, exhibited mixed views on the four main issues in their reporting. These differences reflected different ideologies.

Abstract

Research focusing on incorporating religious values into language learning has recently grown, as reflected in the increasing number of related studies. As the world's largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia has a crucial role in integrating Islamic values into education, particularly in the context of teaching English as a foreign language. This research aimed to develop an English module that contains Islamic values in narrative text material for students at MTs that is valid, practical, and effective. The Islamic values that have been integrated are prophetic stories and Islamic history which are very closely related to the environment of the Islamic boarding school for students at MTs Assalam and MTs Darul Istiqomah Manado. This research is a development research using the ADDIE model which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this research were 2 English teachers and 35 class IX students at MTs Assalam and Darul Istiqomah. Data collection techniques used included interviews, observation, and questionnaires. The material and media design experts have validated the module development with an average result of 90.5%, which means it is very valid. Furthermore, validation of users obtained data of 84.16% (very practical) from student users and 91% (very practical) from English teacher users. Therefore, it concluded that the English module containing Islamic values in Narrative text material meets practical criteria and can help teachers and students achieve learning goals.

Abstract

Differences in writing abilities between students encourage teachers to design or have special assessment tools to evaluate the development of their abilities. Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School applies portfolio assessment as an assessment instrument in the Tahsin kitabah subject. So, this research aims to determine the form of portfolio assessment used in Tahsin kitabah lessons, the steps for portfolio assessment, and their impact on tahsin kitabah learning at the Al-Hidayah Karangploso cottage. This research is qualitative descriptive research, where the data collection process is done through interviews and documentation. The data analysis goes through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the form of portfolio assessment used in the Tahsin kitabah subject at the Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School is an evaluative portfolio because it emphasizes assessment and reflection carried out in a formative and summative manner. The portfolio assessment steps in the Tahsin kitabah subject consist of three main stages. The preparation stage includes identifying learning objectives, explaining them to students, and clarifying portfolio components. The Implementation Stage involves teacher encouragement, discussion of learning progress, and continuous feedback. At the Assessment Stage, criteria are determined with students, applied consistently, and emphasize self-assessment. The impact includes teachers' in-depth understanding of students' writing abilities, increased motivation, self-confidence, and active learning participation. This shows that the implementation of portfolio assessment at the Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School has proven to be effective in achieving Tahsin kitabah’s learning objectives.

Abstract

This article explores and analyzes the meaning of synecdoche, specifically, the forms pars pro toto and totem pro parte, as found in Surah Al-Baqarah. The study employs a qualitative approach, with the Quran as the primary data source. Data were collected using note-taking and free-listening techniques and were analyzed through the adoption of Lakoff's cognitive analysis technique. The findings reveal the presence of both pars pro toto and totem pro parte synecdoches in Surah Al-Baqarah. Examples of pars pro toto include references to parts of prayer (such as standing, bowing, dhikr, and prostration) representing the entire prayer, parts of the body (neck, hands, and face) representing the whole body, and parts of a place (Masjid al-Haram and Kaaba) representing the entire place. Conversely, examples of totem pro parte include references to the whole of a limb (finger) representing a part of it (fingertip) and the whole of a period (moon) representing a part of it (hilal). These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the use of synecdoche in Quranic language, highlighting its role in enriching the textual and interpretive dimensions of the scripture.

Abstract

Research about Intercultural Communicative competence with its relation to English language has been discussed among scholars. However, the discussion about how to integrate it into teaching and learning English in the classroom remains lacking exploration. This research investigated the lecturers’ ways of integrating ICC components in teaching and learning English. This research involved four lecturers of the English Education Department IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo which was taken purposively. The participants were the lecturers who taught receptive and productive skills.   It employed a descriptive qualitative method.  Data were collected through interviews and observation sheets and analyzed using thematic analysis. It found three lecturers’ ways of integrating ICC in teaching English, first, the teachers guided students to have intercultural knowledge, intercultural attitude, and intercultural skills in teaching the English language. Second, the teachers contrasted between English language culture and Indonesian culture. Third, the teachers asked the students to practice the activities which addressed to intercultural knowledge, intercultural attitude, and intercultural skills. This research implied that ICC is competence should be mastered by the English learners in the digital era.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of integrating innovative gestures into language instruction at Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik (UMG) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Gorontalo (UMGO). The primary objective was to assess how various types of gestures, including interactive digital boards, emotional expression, dynamic movement sequences, gamified approaches, and multimodal feedback gestures, influence student engagement, comprehension, and retention. Through observational data and semi-structured interviews with language lecturers, the study provides comprehensive insights into the efficacy of gesture-based teaching methods. The results reveal that the use of gestures significantly enhances the visibility and impact of corrective feedback, making linguistic errors more noticeable and facilitating better understanding and retention compared to traditional verbal feedback methods. Observational data indicate that students are more actively involved in discussions and activities when gestures are used, leading to a more dynamic and interactive classroom environment. This increased engagement highlights the potential of gestures to improve comprehension and cognitive processing in language learning. Semi-structured interviews with lecturers further emphasize the perceived benefits of gestures, such as enhanced engagement, improved comprehension, and better retention of language skills. However, challenges including technological limitations, the need for professional development, and time constraints were also identified. To address these challenges, educators recommended strategies like gradual implementation of gestures, soliciting student feedback, and combining gestures with other multimedia resources. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that integrating gestures into language instruction can significantly enhance learning outcomes by making lessons more engaging and effective. Future research should focus on long-term impacts and the development of training programs to support educators in adopting gesture-based teaching methods.
