Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain (1) optimization of poetry appreciation learning for Indonesian Language Education students at the Peradaban University through the use of social media and (2) students' interest in learning after using social media in learning poetry appreciation. The method in this research is a case study. The focus of research is related to learning poetry with supporting data for interviews and documentation.Data analysis techniques consist of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that (1) social media becomes a medium that can improve students' language skills and critical thinking as an actualization of poetry appreciation learning which includes introduction, recitation, and poetry production through the use of YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and the Website, (2) the use of media social in learning poetry has an effect on improving cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. The cognitive aspect leads to the stages of understanding and the thought process of introducing, studying, and producing poetry. Affective aspects related to the process of inspiration, organization, assessment, and attitude.

Abstract

Marriage is a social institution that adopts a patriarchal ideology to regulate the relationship between husband and wife. As a result, conflicts based on gender inequality can arise as patriarchal ideologies in marriage reinforce the dominance of men over women. A married woman’s life is often portrayed in feminist literature, such as in the short story of Qaisra Shahraz, Zemindar’s wife. This study analyzes the married life of Noor by applying the theory of Simone De Beauvoir in her book, The Second Sex. Besides, the study uses a qualitative approach with a close reading method. The results show that the short story Zemindar's Wife depicts the unequal gender relationship between husbands and wives in marriage. This gender imbalance leads to inequality, with women being dominated and subordinated by their husbands.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal Lana's character development in the novel The Day I Fell into a Fairytale written by Ben Miller. To reveal the objective, this study is using new criticism theory based on direct and indirect characterization that is depicted in the story. Besides, close reading is utilized in the process of analysis, thus descriptive-qualitative strategy will be applied in this study. The data in this study were taken from the novel, mainly gathered from words, phrases, sentences, and symbolism. Furthermore, the writer found that Lana’s character development is highly influenced by her experience jumping into Grimm’s Fairytale world which symbolized her action reading Grimm’s fairytale.

Abstract

Sastra adalah sebuah hasil karya yang tercipta dari ide kreatif seseorang mengenai pandangannya terhadap kehidupan manusia dengan bermediumkan bahasa. Kritik sastra feminis mempermasalahkan asumsi tentang perempuan berdasarkan paham tertentu yang selalu dikaitkan dengan kodrat perempuan hingga kemudian menimbulkan isu tertentu tentang pengarang. Citra perempuan yaitu tingkah laku serta gembaran mental seorang perempuan yang ditunjukkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan sebagai ciri khas dari sikap perempuan-perempuan pada umumnya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan citra perempuan pada cerpen “Ketika Saatnya,” “Kiriman dari Inggris,” “Passampo Siri,” dan “Nasu Likku” dalam buku kumpulan cerita pendek Ketika Saatnya dan kisah-kisah lainnya karya Darmawait Majid. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deksriptif kualitatif yang memfokuskan penelitian citra perempuan pada tokoh. Keempat cerpen yang menjadi objek penelitian berdasarkan dua aspek pencitraan perempuan, yaitu (1) citra diri perempuan dalam aspek fisik dan psikis, (2) citra sosial perempuan dalam aspek keluarga dan masyarakat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh perempuan memiliki cara untuk memperjuangkan haknya masing-masing. Tokoh Tante Siti memperjuangkan anak-anaknya walaupun sempat gila karena ulah suaminya, tokoh Andi Ira memperjuangkan cintanya dengan cara melakukan kawin lari bersama kekasihnya, dan tokoh Alaida merupakan sosok yang tegar pada pendiriannya.

Abstract

The social position or role of participants in communicative events is referred to as social deixis. The parts of language structure that encode individuals' social identities are referred to as social deixis. The current study examined the use of social deixis in students’ writing. It focused on secondary students’ writing. The students were allowed to choose the topic of writing. Using qualitative research, this study  collected the data through documentation. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, drawing, and conclusion. The findings revealed that students' writing only contained relational social discourse. The students' writing frequently used addressee honorific relational social discourse. For the purpose of showing respect, students frequently used relational social deduction. Readers are persuaded to do a particular action by the students' goal as well.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see whether utilizing role play techniques may help Junior High School students improve their speaking abilities. A total of 68 students from the Surabaya’s Junior High School participated in this study. A quasi experimental research has been used in this study. The experimental group and control group, each of which had 34 students, were the two classes that were analysed. Role play techniques were used in the experiment group, and conventional techniques were used in the control group. Independent samples test was used to analyse the research data, which was then provided as quantitative data. The average score of students after the oral test was given using the conventional technique was only 71.25 in the control group and 76.97 in the experimental group. The average score of students after the oral test was given using the role play technique was 81.08 in the control group and 87.64 in the experimental group. As a result, students who are taught using Role play techniques receive higher scores than those who are not.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi eksistensi perempuan dalam filem “Uang Panai” yang terepresentasi dari pemeran utama Wanita Risna. Seorang perempuan berdarah Makassar dengan lingkungan sosial yang masih sangat memegang teguh nilai-nilai budaya dan tradisi dimana tokoh tersebut menunjukkan eksistensinya dalam menyikapi budaya dalam pernikahan Bugis-Makassar yaitu uang panai. Dalam sudut pandang perempuan (Risna) menunjukkan bahwa perempuan berusaha keras untuk melawan tradisi adat pernikahan tersebut. Teori feminisme eksistensialis dari tokoh Simone De Beauvoir digunaka sebagai acuan dalam menganalisis filem “Uang Panai”. Metode analisis data cerita menggunakan analisis yang berkaitan dengan eksistensialis perempuan.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the difficulties faced and the strategies used by English Department students at Universitas Trunojoyo Madura in learning English. The study used a mixed-method approach, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The source of data was one class in the second semester that consisted of thirty-seven students. The data were the difficulties faced by the students in learning English and the strategies they used to deal with them. The research instrument used was questionnaires containing both close-ended and open-ended questions. The data that was obtained from closed-ended questions were analysed quantitatively while those that were derived from open-ended questions were analysed qualitatively. The results showed that the difficulties faced by English Department students in learning English include pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary and they exercised different strategies to solve them. Specifically, the strategies to solve the difficulty in learning pronunciation were listening to English songs, singing English songs, watching English movies or films, imitating using Google Translate, and practising the pronunciation by themselves. The strategies to tackle the difficulty in learning grammar were watching YouTube, reading English books, learning from the internet, learning through Instagram, and learning by themselves. Furthermore, there were several ways that they used to deal with the difficulty in learning vocabulary, for example, they used English dictionaries, watched English movies, read English books, used English songs, and memorized new vocabulary.

Abstract

Technology growth in the field of education has resulted in significant changes, particularly in the field of English learning in higher education. Instagram could be one of the alternative instruments for supporting the practice of teaching high school students English as Foreign Language (EFL). Instagram's implementation, which has amassed a large user base over the last decade, could be a valuable teaching tool to aid the learning process. The purpose of this research is to see if using Instagram video as a learning media can help ESL high school students enhance their speaking skills. The subjects of the study consisted of 49 high school students who applied the Cambridge Curriculum. A quasi experimental research design was used in this study. The pre-test and post-test score were obtained by requiring the students to speak monologue giving opinion. Then, the pre-test and post-test data was analyzed by Independent Sample T-test. Based on the test results, significance value (2-tailed) of post-test was .000 lower than .05. Moreover, the researcher found that the post-test mean score of experimental group was 89.92 whereas the control group was 82.71. In short, there was a significant difference in Instagram video usage on senior high school students’ speaking skill. Cohen's d was used to determine the magnitude of the effects, and it showed 2.6. It was discovered that the effects were significant. Thus, the findings suggest that using Instagram video as a learning tool for senior high school students could be beneficial.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the moves and steps leading to the generic structures of Nihi Official Website. It is a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this study is the official website of Nihi, while the data are the sentences in promotional of tourism destination that contain of move and step of advertisement. It is based on Bhatia’s (1993) moves and steps in advertisements. The results of the study shows that there are four obligatory moves, i.e. move 1 establishing credentials, move 2 introducing the offer with 2 steps in move 2, namely step 1 offering the product and step 2 essential detailing of the offer, move 5 soliciting responses. There is a non-obligatory, i.e. move 6 pressure tactic that only appear once. In addition, there are absences of three moves. They are move 3, move 4, and move 7 that are not found the promotional website.
