Abstract

Abstract: This research is about the process of designing a prototype for the Dokkai learning application as a self-learning medium specifically for JLPT preparation. The application is named "Pejuang JLPT" (JLPT Warrior). The objective of this research is to analyze and design the interface design and user experience (User Interface/User Experience) in order to develop and use it as a self-learning medium specifically for mastering comprehension of the dokkai subject in JLPT. The method used in this research is design thinking. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 20 respondents and conducting interviews with 5 individuals out of those 20 respondents.. The data analysis technique is described using qualitative descriptive data analysis. The analyzed data is then depicted as ideas and solutions for dokkai problems and the use of the application by the respondents. After ideation and solution depiction, interface design and prototyping are carried out. Finally, the prototype is tested and evaluated by expert validators in the field of media and content. The raw evaluation results are processed and calculated using the System Usability Scale (SUS), and good scores are obtained in terms of media and satisfactory scores in terms of content.Key Words: Prototype, Language Learning Media, Deliberate Practice

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to look at the style of language contained in the lyrics of the song Noah album Keterkaitan Keterikatan after 7 years of not releasing a new album. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques observing and taking notes. Data analysis techniques used start from identifying, classifying, analyzing, explaining, and concluding which is better known as descriptive analysis. As a result, from 47 datums, 4 language styles were found, namely repetition language style; 1) alliteration 2) assonance 3) epizeuksis 4) anaphora, comparative figurative language; 1) personification, conflicting language style; 1) hyperbole 2) climax, and linking language style; 1) euphemism. The writer concludes that the lyrics of Noah's album, Keterkaitan Keterikatan, are dominant in the language style of comparison and repetition. This shows the sadness about love which is emphasized in the language style of repetition and is illustrated through inanimate objects with the style of comparison.Keywords: Language Style, Song Lyrics, Noah

Abstract

Abstract: Language holds an important role in human life because it is an effective way for contacting purposes in their lives. It is a tool of communication which means that the language itself beings to understand and cannot be separated with human because language is one of the ways for human to communicate to each other. Language is also used to show ideas, feelings, and thoughts to others. This research aims to analyze code collected using an observation sheet regarding to the types of code mixing and video to gather the data in use of code mixing used by the students’ of English study program in their teaching practice video. This research used qualitative research method with descriptive qualitative. The data for this research were the code mixing in the classroom. The subject of the study is the students’ of English study program. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed through some steps namely data reduction, data display based on code mixing categories and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that there are two types of code mixing used by the students’ of English study program. The types which occurred in the students’ utterance is intra sentential code mixing (92,7%)and intra lexical code mixing (7,3%). In conclusion, bilingual and multilingual speakers allowed using two languages at a particular time for supporting ideas. For example, an idea cannot be explained in one language, then another language will be need to clarify it.Key Words: Code Mixing, Descriptive Qualitative Method, Teaching Practice Video.

Abstract

Abstract: Idioms in Japanese are called kanyouku. Kanyouku is an expression that is formed from a combination of two or more words, where the meaning of each of the forming words cannot be interpreted by just looking at the sentence (Shinmura, 2018). Kanyouku can be divided based on the forming structure and its meaning. This research aims toexplain classification kanyouku based on the forming structure and meaning in the book 101 Japanese idioms: Understanding Japanese Language andCulture Through Popular Phrases essay Senko K. Maynard. The theory used in this research is classification kanyouku based on forming structures according to Miharu (2022) and based on meaning according to Muneo (1992). This research is a qualitative descriptive study. From the results of the analysis of 25 kanyouku, there are 10 doushi kanyouku, 5 keiyoushi kanyouku and 10 meishi kanyouku. Based on the meaning,consists of 2 kankaku, kanjou wo arawasu kanyouku, 9 karada, seikaku, taido wo arawasu kanyouku, 2 koui, dousa, koudo arawasu kanyouku, 10 joutai, teido, kachi wo arawasu kanyouku and 2 shakai, seikatsu, bunka wo arawasu kanyouku.Keywords: Kanyouku, Idioms, Classification.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the correlation between writing essay anxiety and writing ability of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau. The population of this research was 113 students which divided into 5A, 5B and 5C class as total number of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample and 5C class had been chosen as the sample of the research which was made up of 36 students. The researcher used a questionnaire and a test to collect the data. There were 27 items for questionnaire of writing essay anxiety. The second instrument was a writing test. The researcher prepared 3 topics and students chose one topic and wrote an essay for at least 200 words. The result of writing test was checked by 3 raters. The researcher used SPSS to find out the correlation of the research. The result showed that there is a significant correlation between students’ writing anxiety and students’ writing ability of the third-year students of English Study Program by number of 0.717 which is between 0.70 and 0.90. According to Sugiyono (2017) it can be concluded that the students’ writing essay anxiety and students’ writing ability of this research has a strong positive correlation.Key Words: Correlation, Essay, Anxiety

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explain the forms and meanings of Wakamono Kotoba that appear in live replay videos on the Nihongo no Mori YouTube channel. Wakamono Kotoba is said to be a variety of language created by a particular group or community, used in everyday communication with meanings known only to that group. The implementation of Wakamono Kotoba occurs in both real and virtual life, such as on social media. Social media is a popular long-distance communication technology today, and YouTube is one of its platforms. On the YouTube platform, Wakamono Kotoba is used not only in conversational form but also in discussions, as presented in one of the contents by the Nihongo no Mori channel. The researcher used the observation and note-taking method to collect data for this study. First, the researcher observed three videos titled "JAPANESE SLANG || 「テカる!」," "JAPANESE SLANG || 「ボコる!」," and "JAPANESE SLANG || 日本の若者言葉!" on the Nihongo no Mori YouTube channel. Then, the researcher observed and recorded the data found, which were later analyzed for the formation processes and meanings. Subsequently, the data were described in a descriptive form. The results obtained from this study included 16 data points of Wakamono Kotoba with five different formation processes.Key Words: Wakamono Kotoba, Replay Live, Youtube

Abstract

Abstract: From the difficulty and necessity to mastering English as it is almost useful in every life aspect nowadays, the writer decides to conduct this study to examines the translation strategy of idiomatic expressions in Onward movie subtitles. It is a descriptive qualitative method one, aiming to find out the types of idiomatic expressions and the strategy employed to translate it. The two objectives are answered by applying Adelnia and Dastjerdi’s (2011) theory and Baker’s (2011) theory consecutively. The findings shows that colloquialism is the most frequent form of idiomatic expression that appears, with 150 (41,6%) total findings. Phrasal verbs come close in the second place with 145 (40,2%) total findings, Slang comes in third place with 64 (17,7%) total findings. Meanwhile, proverbs and allusions tied for last place, with only one finding for each of them. In total, the subtitle of Onward movie contains 361 idiomatic expressions. The second research question is about how the idiomatic expressions in Onward movie’s subtitles are translated. The results identify 212 (57,9%) occurrences of paraphrase as the strategy used to interpret the idiomatic expressions present in the movie, making it the most commonly used strategy. Contrary to this, the translator never uses borrowing from the source language or the omission of a play on idioms as their strategy to translate idiomatic expressions in the movie. The differences in culture of both languages may be the biggest factor of why the translator chooses to use paraphrasing to translate the idiomatic expressions in Onward movie subtitles.Key Words: Translation Strategy, Idioms, Movie.

Abstract

Abstract: Speaking is communication occurs when the listener can provide the speaker's response after the listener understands the message conveyed. The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ Speaking Strategies Used by English Study Program, Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the fourth year students of English study program of FKIP Universitas Riau of 2022/2023 academic year. The whole number of the population is about 119 students. Due to the large population which is consisting of 3 classes, the cluster random sampling technique is used. One of the classes is taken as the sample as many as 39 students. This research design used descriptive-quantitative method as the research data approach. There were 20 items in the questionnaire. The adopted from SILL questionnaire (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) version 7.0 is used to collect the data. The questionnaire were collected through Google Form. The collected data were analyzed by using Microsoft excel. The findings of this study revealed that the student tent to use social strategies with average score of 3.90 (classified as high level), In short, it can be inferred that the students’ strategy in speaking English is mostly used is a social strategy. It was very important to practice every day with lowering his anxiety and more cooperating with himself. The suggestion is it would be better if they also can use the other strategies which are appropriate to their tasks, difficulties and learning objectives. Then, hopefully students can improve their English by using more language learning strategies in their learning to help learning easier, and enjoyable.Key Words: Speaking, Language Learning Strategies, English Study Program

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyzing EFL Learners’ strategy in apologizing. This was a descriptive qualitative study using a qualitative approach combine with descriptive statistics. The participants of this study were 32 EFL Learners that currently study in their second academic year in English Department of Universitas Riau. They were selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data was collected online using a DCT (Discourse Completion Task) containing 8 situation which required participants to write down their responses for each situation. The result revealed that participants are capable to use a wide variety of apology strategies. Moreover, they have tendency to use more than one strategy in one situation.Key Words: Apology strategy, DCT, .
