Abstract

One of the sacred missions carried out by every religion is spreading harmony and peace. However, the facts show us that religious sentiment often creates disharmony among religious adherents and it also often leads to conflict and violence. This problem is caused by, among others, truth claim which sees other religions as false. The truth claim has been in fact one of the main terms promulgated by every religion towards its followers. Using qualitative approach, this article attempts to explain that every single religion in the world possesses its own distinctive doctrine about truth. The doctrine about truth has in fact led to two implications, namely the positive implication and the negative one. The truth claim would result in positive effect when it is viewed prudently and not understood blindly. It means that every religious adherent should realize the existence of “other” truth out of his/her belief. On the contrary, the truth claim would bring about negative impact when it is seen sightlessly and understood through one-sided view. This negative attitude would be an obstacle for every effort to create peaceful relation among interfaith adherents.

Abstract

This article discusses Islamic culture that undergoes shift in meaning as a form of expression and self-representation of Middle Class Muslim Women. Basically, the religious movement of women constitutes a form of identity assertion. The Middle Class Muslim Women unconsciously exhibit new culture, although it must be admitted that not all Middle Class Muslims in Indonesia follow popular lifestyle. Instead, they demonstrate culture different from what of fundamentalist groups with their turban, cloak, and veil of a specific color. Middle Class Muslim Women create an alternative lifestyle which conforms Islamic norms, flexible, not rigid to build Islamic identity. In general, Middle Class Muslim Women in Surabaya have a relatively similar lifestyle. They tend to be rationalistic in understanding religion. They prefer, for example, more scientific materials to enrich their religious knowledge. Although they are rationalistic and follow the values of modernity, they still adhere to normative values of religion. The ethical values or religious norms are their main guideline for behavior including the reason for wearing Muslim clothing and veil.

Abstract

This article deals with the idea of interfaith marriage proposed by the Endowment Foundation of Paramadina (Yayasan Wakaf Paramadina) established by Nurcholish Madjid and his colleagues. The activists of this foundation offer ideas to give freedom to every Muslim, both male or female, to marry a non-Muslim, regardless of their religion and their faith. This idea is at least starting from two basic assumptions; first, that the Qur’ân only prohibits marriage with Arab polytheists which are almost certainly does not exist now; and second, that all religions and faiths that exist today are People of the divine Book. This idea had never been previously proposed by other scholars who only allow the marriage of male Muslim with woman from the people of the Book (Jews and Christians). Even the existing Indonesian law requires that marriage should be performed by a pair of co-religionists. This idea refers to the considerat-ion of social relationships, namely the creation of inter-religious harmony, but apparently tend to ignore the interests of the faith.

Abstract

This article discusses the issue of brotherhood in Islamic economic system. The goal of Islamic economics is to create advantages (falâh}) for all economic man. To achieve this goal, Muslim economists have agreed to set up the philosophical pillars of Islamic economic system which consists of tawhîd, ‘ibâdah, khilâfah, and ukhuwwah. One of the important challenges to deal with is how to place the idea of brotherhood as a pillar of Islamic economic system that is applicable in economic activities which then lead to equal advantages. Muslim economists argue that Islamic economic system has led economic man to possess altruistic personality. This is not only related to the problem of consumption but also to that of production. In addition, the distribution of wealth specific in Islamic economic system has resulted in brotherhood. The spirit of brotherhood has inspired the effort of distributing wealth economically and non-economically towards shared advantages. Specific wealth distribution in Islamic economics is by placing human as economic being and social being alike. Therefore, brotherhood is implemented in market and non-market economic activities. The implementation of brotherhood is not only in the form of cooperative but more than that is to be oriented to efforts of empowering economic man.

Abstract

This article discuss the concept of being in the perspective of existentialism and Islam. The closest similarity to the word “being” is to on (Ancient Greece), as the word of einai, to be (on, onta). For Parmenides, “being” (to on) is one, eternal and unchanging. Gabriel Marcel calls the way the human being with the term être-au-monde, etre in carne, geist-in-welt. Martin Heidegger uses a formula being in the world to characterize human life. Being in the world as a feature of human life, human beings are in the situation. Living in a world of concrete means that there are human relationships with the situation. Sartre said that the real one where there are two, namely: I’etre en soi and I’etre pour Soi. For Sartre, I’etre en soi is the idea that only a concrete phenomenon has ontological status; only something concrete is real. Unlike the being-in-itself, for Sartre the concept of being-for-itself is a state of being that comes with the awareness and self-control. The concept of being (wujûd) by Suhrawardî is a mental concepts (mahfûm) that do not have the type and diferensia. In the illumination philosophy of Suhrawardî, the idea of wujûd can not be separated from nature and depiction of light. The philosophy of wujûd by Mulla Sadrâ stands on three basic principles of fundamental importance. These three principles are as follows: wahdat al-wujûd, tashkîk al-wujûd, and tashkîk. While Mohammad Iqbal emphasis on metaphysics and anthropological philosophy. Iqbal gives greater emphasis on more concrete dimensions, namely khudi (ego).

This principle is really important for the creation of the unity of the Muslims in the name of ukhuwwah Islāmīyah (Islamic brotherhood). This principle prohibits a believer to guestion the religious stream, political choice, position, and social status and background of the individual community of individual Muslims. The principle eventually enables the tabligh community to adapt to different environments and preaching fileds in building religious community. Abstract

This article deals with the theological thought of Abū Ḥanīfah on the concepts of irjā' and shafā'ah. On the concept of irjā', Abū Ḥanīfah fully returns the legitimacy of 'Uthmān b. 'Affān as the third caliph and the superiority of 'Alī b. Abī Tālib merely to the authority of Allah. This concept rejects the Khariji doctrine on the expulsion of the wrong doers (sinful people) from the Muslim community, a rejection which implies that 'Uthmān is a legally accepted caliph. This concept also rejects the early Shī'ī doctrine on the superiority of 'Alī, and ranks al-Khulafā' al-Rāshidūn (the rightly guided caliphs) in accordance with their advantages and historical chronology. On the concept of shafā'ah, Abū Ḥanīfah believes it as something that will happen on the Day of Judgment. The followers of the Prophet Muhammad must fulfill twelve requirements if they wish to receive shafā'ah from the Prophet. To Abū Ḥanīfah, the Prophet's shafā'ah is certain for every Muslim although he/she committed great sin during his/her life except shirk bi Allah.

Abstract

This article discusses the efforts to revitalize social values on the basis of faith in monotheism that is alienated from social reality. So far, Islamic movement is too normative and tends to neglect differentiation, segmentation and social stratification in society. Consequently, the normative sentiments regarding the unity of the people became much more prominent than the actual commitment to defend the weak, displaced and oppressed groups in society. To understand Islam needs to look at the historical determinism, in order to avoid a partial understanding. Pure and social ritual can be performed equally an ideal personification of a true Muslim. The egalitarian character of Islam as a religion of liberation manifestation should be used to understand human conception and reality. Thus, someone will not be separated from his nature as human being who must worship the Lord and carry out social functions, as well as to avoid the trap of ritual extremism or social extremism. The revitalization of social values of monotheism by integrating relational networks of Islam in social change gave birth to anti ethnocentrism, universalism and liberation.
