Abstract

This qualitative research was conducted in PT. Jaguar Farm from 18 May to 28 June 2016. Sample was purposively selected using snowball sampling method followed by in-depth interviews. Data was analysed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that Standard Operating Company of  PT. Jaguar Farm was not too difficult and can be understood by all farmers. But the system seemed to be still one-sided contract which was determined only by the company, while farmers did not have a bargaining position to adjust the contract awarded. The patron-client system run by PT. Jaguar Farm was relatively new so that the clients who joined the company’s business were mostly small farmers, in the sense that they still required assistance in the form of capital, extension and marketing. Another finding showed however that the client had a problem in the delay time of harvesting process. Therefore, the study concluded that PT. Jaguar Farm as the core in the patron-client business was able to show good enough performance, but there were some drawbacks that possibly could harm farmers. Keywords: Partnership, contract farming, breeding farm, empowerment

Pasangkayu Regency is one of the regencies in West Sulawesi that has the potential to apply the concept of sustainable agriculture through palm oil plantations. One of the efforts in developing sustainable farming systems is by integrating agriculture and livestock farming. The purpose of this study is to analyze the economic value and livestock model based on the integration of palm and cattle on peatlands in the Pasangkayu Regency. The study was conducted in palm oil plantations on peatlands in Pedongga District, Pasangkayu Regency from June to August 2018. Data collection techniques were carried out by interviewing and distributing questionnaires directly to 45 informants. The analysis was performed including economic analysis, analysis of sustainability data, analysis of Multiple Goal Programming (MGP), also the drafting of the index and the status of sustainability of integrated palm-cattle. The economic value of the farmers in integrated farming systems of cattle-palm on peatlands in the Pasangkayu Regency showed by the income earned was Rp. 11,069,436.18 / year and much higher than the economic value without integration which the income was only Rp. 916,982.73 / year. The integration-based livestock farming model observed from the ecological, economic, social and cultural, and the legal and institutional dimensions were categorized as sustainable, while the infrastructure and technology dimensions were still below sustainable values. Therefore, the overall integration of palm and cattle on peatlands in the Pasangkayu Regency was categorized as sustainable.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of cassava and tofu mixture fermented by Aspergillus niger, Rizhopus oligosporus and the combination among them (50% of Aspergillus niger and 50% of Oligosporus Rizhopus) as a substitute feed ingredients corn meal. The research method was laboratory experiment using the analysis of completely randomized design (CRD) factorial (3 x 4). The first factor was the 3 types of microbes (M) that consisted of M0 = fermentation by Aspergillus niger, M1 = fermentation with Rhizopus oligosporus and M2 = fermentation with the combination 50% of Aspergillus niger and 50% of Rhizopus oligosporus. The second factor was 4 incubation time (T) that consisted of T0 = non-fermented, T1 = 2 days of incubation time, T2 = 4 days of incubation time and T3 = 6 days of incubation time. Each treatment was repeated 3 times. Variables measured were proximate nutrient content, fiber component content (NDF and ADF, silica, lignin), soluble protein content and mineral content (calcium and phosphorus). Data were analyzed by ANOVA, if there were differences among the treatments then it woukd be followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. Results showed that microbes provided a significant influence (P <0.01) on ash (%), crude protein (%), crude fiber (%), crude fat (%), gross energy (Kcal / Kg), soluble protein (%), NDF (%), ADF (%), cellulose (%), hemicelluloses (%) and silicate (%) but they did not provide significant effect on lignin (%). The incubation period had highly significant effect (P <0.01) on ash (%), crude protein (%), crude fiber (%), crude fat (%), gross energy (Kcal / Kg), soluble protein (%), NDF (%), ADF (%), cellulose (%), hemicelluloses (%), lignin (%) and silicate (%). It was concluded that fermentation was best treated using a combination between 50% of Aspergillus niger and 50% of Rhizopus oligosporus with 2 days of incubation time. The study suggested for further research (biological test) to use a mixture of cassava and fermented tofu as a substitute feed ingredients corn meal in broiler chickens.   Keywords: Cassava waste, tofu waste, fermentation, Aspergillus niger, Rizhopus oligosporus and corn meal

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the main source of bacteria contamination in milk at smallholder dairy farmers. The research was conducted at Margo Rukun dairy farm group in Semarang regency. Samples were milk and possible bacteria contamination sources during milking process such as: milk bucket swab, cow teat skin swab, farmer’s hand swab, water used during milking and napkin for wiping the udder (cutted at 1x1 cm square). Observed parameter was total number of bacteria using total plate count (TPC) method. The data were analyzed by t-test and linear regression analysis. The result showed that the total bacteria in milk were 320.143 CFU/ml. Total bacteria in the bucket (320.143 CFU/ml) was higher (p<0.05) than that in the water (149.227 CFU/ml). However, total bacteria in the water did not differ with the total bacteria in the teat skin (109.833 CFU/ml). Total bacteria in the teat skin were higher (p<0.05) than that in the napkin (96.750 CFU/ml) and in the farmer’s hands (33.380 CFU/ml). Highest coeficient correlation (r=0.384) was found between total bacteria in milk and total bacteria in milk bucket, indicating that the milk bucket gave the highest contribution to bacteria contamination in milk. Keywords: milk, bacteria, contamination, milking

Abstract

Whey is liquid cheese waste produced from the cheese making process after being separated from the curd. Cheese production waste contains a carbon source, one of which is lactose as an energy source in the development of fermented biotechnology, especially the manufacture of probiotics for livestock. Lactose (4-7%) and protein (0.6-1%) in whey cheese can be used as a medium for the growth of lactic acid bacteria and yeast in producing secondary metabolites which could be applied as nutraceutical feed additives that were useful for medical or health, including prevention and treatment of diseases and improve livestock performance. The research purpose was to determine the effect of adding kefir grain 1-5% into whey cheese based on chemical quality and microbiological. Whey Cheese is mixed with 10% molasses and then heated at 80oC for 10 minutes later the temperature is lowered between 35-40 oC and added starter according to treatment. The next step is incubating anaerobic kefir fermentation for 24 hours with temperatures between 35-40oC. The experimental method was designed with a completely randomized design with 6 starter level treatments and 3 replications, namely 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%. The results showed that the addition of 1-5% kefir grain was very significant (P<0.01) increasing protein, lactic acid bacteria, yeast and reducing water, fat, Total Plate Count (TPC). It can be concluded study concludes that the addition of 5% kefir grain into whey cheese added with 10% molasses affects the increase in lactic and yeast acid bacteria, protein and decreases fat, water, Total Plate Count  (TPC).
